The conversation on the ethics of children in family channels just makes me think of the mother of the 8 Passengers KZbin channel, Ruby Franke, who was recently arrested for child abuse, torture, neglect. Her six children (the stars of her online content) NEEDED these laws to protect them 😔

Yeah, we recorded this before that news story broke. It's quite possible that the abuse and torture was severe. And this isn't the first (or last) time this has happened on KZbin.

Hey. I grew up in Springdale. A couple years older than Josh. Saw the Duggars quite a bit. Was raised in basically the Pentacostal version of this. For clarification, the Springdale,Fayetteville, Rogers area of Northwest Arkansas(kind of one big city due to proximity) is not rural. Its quite possibly one of the wealthiest areas in the country due to Wal-Mart, JB Hunt, Tyson Foods all having headquarters there. Tontitown (roughly 20 minutes away) have areas out of the city which could kind of be considered undeveloped areas, this is mainly due to individuals buying several acres and building houses to escape the ciry. Tontitown is not rural. Northwest Arkansas is more comparable to San Diego these days honestly. And there are large police forces in all of these areas. Not saying they arent politically influenced, but thats anywhere and I moved away a bit back. The good ol boys club still runs rampant however, because...well Arkansas. ah yes and still deeply, deeply evangelical despite the astronomical influx of individuals flocking in. Other than NWA and Little Rock, you're spot on in regards to just how rural the state is.

Oh, interesting. I didn't know that. I guess I should have looked that up. From the footage of the show, it looked rural to me. My bad. Thanks!

I don’t know but from my experience the Duggar’s talking with their cop friend was a very calculated move to protect themselves while pushing the problem under the rug. I grew up in a conservative Christian community. My dad also happened to be the chief of police of the area our church was in. He was frequently called in to the pastor’s office because a congregation member had admitted to sexually assaulting someone or parents found out their children were assaulting their siblings. They always said they called my father in to “do the right thing”. He would say he needed to file a police report and speak to CWS( if needed) the pastor would demand to handle it in house to protect “gods children”. When he would then file the report we would get shunned for a while at church. It was so draining for my father and now that I’m older and know the details I’m shocked we didn’t leave the church the first time this happened.

One time aI had a parent meeting in my Catholic Church about SA, I remember them telling us the statistics of our children being abuse were 8 out 10 kids! And it blew my mind because I was abuse as a child and to think that I was not the only one made me feel less gross 😢

Yes, the rate is much higher than people suspect due to the fact that we shame victims and rarely talk about this common form of abuse.

I grew up in Edmonds. My parents paid to have seat belts installed in the early 60's and I wore a seatbelt every single time I rode in their car. In fact, I never gave it up. These days, I ride Everett Paratransit and I continue to wear a seatbelt every single time I ride!

Jimbobs solution of going to his cop friend that let Josh off with a warning for a horrific crime was problematic... That cop was latter convicted for having child porn... That's not a solution to protect his other children...

Is this the type of religion/ church that takes tithings? Maybe a financial reason why the church would’ve wanted them to not make any formal reporting. Loss of contracts at TLC = loss of earnings for the church

I do wonder why you would put parents being allowed to post pictures of their children on set in top positition of conditions you would make mandatory? Personally I think the laws should be there to protect the children (including their privacy), not open them up to yet another, slightly more benign, kind of violation. There are lots of places where you wouldn't be allowed to post your children's pictures or selfies online, i.e. from some hospital situations, certain restricted work places and I'd argue that a movie set would probably be included in that list of protected spaces. Why would you think having their picture taken and put on social media should be a basic right for child actors?

There are lots of assumptions being made to make your idea in the last segment feasible: 1st that CPS is a net good organization (disputable at best), and 2nd that parents “would know that this was a law”. As a parent, I can tell you we don’t know anything ahead of time. Why would someone know about that law unless they had been wanting to become a parent and paid attention to parents and kids issues for years before becoming a parent. I don’t think most people have that experience. A lot of people who grew up not wanting kids end up with kids.

From my understanding TLC as a way to “mitigate” legal liability with child labor laws they payout the company associated with the duggars. “Mad Family Inc. “and from then on they pass on the responsibility of payment to that company which is owned by Jim Bob. So it was his responsibility to distribute funds to the children depending on their coerced agreement with the adult children

For the most part, I think children should never be on reality TV--including family vlogs--and when they are featured, there should be a rule where kids under 18 are required to have their identities and privacy protected. This includes concealing their faces, voices, distinctive clothing (like school uniforms), their legal names, birthdays, etc. The only “exceptions” that I can think of are shows/vlogs that are explicitly *not* about the kids/family, but may occasionally feature the kids/family. For example, Fixer Upper is about a married couple, Chip and Joanna, remodeling houses, but sometimes their kids may make appearances. Another example could be how Nephi Garcia (Designer Daddy), an amazing fashion designer, will often show his beautiful family modeling his brilliant creations. In these cases the subject matter is the home remodeling and custom-made outfits; the focus is seldom, if ever, on the children/family. However, even with these “exceptions,” I think it would be prudent to practice the same privacy precautions, especially when it comes to Fixer Upper which sometimes treads dangerously close to family vlogging. When it comes to Designer Daddy, I think he does it right since we only ever see his kids in staged photos; their privacy is never infringed upon (as far as I can tell). Shows (like competitions, pageants, and family vlogs), however, are inherently exploitative since they require that the children be present. You could argue that it’s about the the dancing or the pageantry, but I’d strongly disagree since such competitions cannot be held without the underage participants. Perhaps if the only parts being shown were of the competition itself, sure. But once the show starts going into behind-the-scenes drama, the focus/subject matter has clearly shifted from being about the competition to being about the competitors. That can be fine for consenting adults, but it’s disgusting when it comes to minors. As for social media, if you’re privately sharing some holiday photos with friends/family that include the kids, I think that’s absolutely fine. But once you start publicly sharing photos of your kids, especially for the purposes of monetization and/or clout, I think it's gone too far. Sometimes a kid may grow up to love the viral memes that they inspired, but it's equally possible that they’ll grow up feeling humiliated or resentful. Kids deserve better protections.

Several several years ago when I used Heroin I got a paraphernalia charge. I went to court and had to hear what a terrible person I was because I was a "heroin addict" and comments like " you want me to go easy on a HEROIN ADDICT? NO!" . Mind you this was after I had to sit and watch a sex offender get off soooo easy because he had a sex addiction. Sombody self medicates and puts a drug in their own body and does not harm anyone else is pure evil but someone sexually assaults someone and poor them they are struggling from an addiction and need help, not to get in trouble... Complete BS. Sorry but this video really reminded me of that plus my own traumas made it hard to watch. Ive seen so many ppl in my life defending and making excuses for sex offenders and disguard the person they hurt. I know that is not what was going on in this video but it definitely got to me and stung a little.

Yeah. I get that. I'm not making excuses for offenders. And I'm certainly not shaming people who self medicate for trauma.

this is obviously a very complicated conversation and i've been and remain a big fan of this channel. but so many thoughts on this episode. 1) even if someone has a fb page that has 300 friends and family ? statistically ? 12 of those people would be unsafe to watch child content . 2) as someone who at this point in their life, has fell into a couple of gov't related jobs ? even with AI working optimally ? you are giving wayyyyyyy too much credit to what gov't agencies can and will do. like, wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much

Dr. Honda, you briefly referenced data about rehabilitation for offenders of child sexual abuse but didn't share any of the details. Will you be sharing that data in later episodes? I think it would be helpful to know that info so we can challenge our assumptions about the likelihood of a MAP committing sexual violence against a minor and whether or not an offender can even be rehabilitated. I see lots of contradictions within the research literature on these topics, but that's not the impression I got from you. My access to scholarly journals is limited to what's free and available on PubMed, so you no doubt have much more exposure to the research in this area and I'd just love to know how you came to your conclusions using that literature.

Also yesss. OPPENHEIMER is overrated! 👏🏾👏🏾. There was so much left out of the movie: Amazing physics discoveries (discovery of general relativity, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, etc), geopolitical strife, espionage of Nazi nuclear programs, coverage amazing personalities involved (Fermi, Bohrs, Einstein to list just a few who barely were in the movie). This should have been a 3 season miniseries on HBO, putting it in a movie like this did not do this spectacular moment in human history, the arrival of the nuclear age, justice.

I've stated this before, but again, you need to talk about possible breeding fetish. There's a lot more prevalent in what people might imagine!!! as someone that is in the BDSM community. It's a palling. How many people have that fetish and have it and aren't necessarily aware of it I think celebrities like Nick Cannon also might have a breeding fetish.

I have no tolerance for people who abuse children like that. I’m sorry, maybe because no one I care about has ever done this. And to think of it, if I knew a family member who had committed such heinous acts would turned over to the authorities. These people are menace to the community and deserve to be labeled at the very least. There can always be castration 🤷 right so labeling doesn’t sound too bad considering the lever of damage the victim has now been subjected to. It’s great that you guys are compassionate towards this people but that will not be me at this point in time.
