Today we’re joined again by Jinger Duggar Vuolo, author of "Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith from Fear," and Jeremy Vuolo to discuss their theology deep dive into Bill Gothard's teachings and how Jinger found herself in gospel truth. In her new book, Jinger shares her theological journey from following a fundamentalist leader to finding freedom in Christ. We discuss the immediate response to the book and some criticisms she has faced because of it. Jeremy shares how his upbringing shaped their theology after they met, and we talk about their study of the Duggars' traditional belief system and Jinger's realization that this theology was not entirely biblical. We also discuss Jinger's brother Josh, who is currently in prison, and how his actions, as well as the media portrayal of Christianity as a whole because of his actions, led Jinger and Jeremy to speak out for the true gospel. We also look at the lies spread about Jessa Duggar Seewald's miscarriage a few weeks ago, which many anti-Christian news sources claimed was an abortion. How do these lies affect Jinger, and how do Jinger and Jeremy cope with this media scrutiny?

This conversation has changed my understanding of my shattered family, due to gothardism. We raised our “small” family ( due to infertilty for 8 years, SIDS death of our only son, 3 miscarriages )of 4 girls. Gothardism teaches that these hardships were God’s judgement of my husband and I. We had to carry our shame each year to Knoxville conference as all eyes saw our small family with this judgement and shame. Our 4 girls were home educated in ATI, went to Indy for courses and now choose to abandon their walk with God. Now i see they reject gothard, not Christ because of the distorted view we had of a relationship with a living Lord Jesus! We walked in legalism, arrogant that other families didn’t “obey” the standards!!! Now I will go to Him alone, tear out the gothardism lies and base ALL on the Word of God. I had asked forgiveness of my 4 girls for legalistic childhoods, but this is so much worse as I allowed the Bible to be 2nd to gothardism💔💔💔💔Pray that God will redeem my family, in spite of the shambles hubby and I created with “ outward obedience”. 😢🙏 Thank you Jeremy for your biblical insight.

I don't go to Church, I wasn't raised with the word of the god, or anything like that. But I grew up watching 19 Kids and Counting. I am watching this after finishing Shiny Happy Faces, and hearing how Jermery speaks about the bible and his faith, you can see such a difference between him and Jim Bob. It's exactly what he said, IBLP doesn't teach the bible and faith in God, it is using that faith and the bible to accomplish whatever. It really good to see Jill and Jinger find themselves within their marriages and within their faith and break free from that life.

I love watching and hearing Jinger speak about what she has learned. I remember when she got married being concerned for her because I thought she was showing fear of Jeremy. One of the reasons for that was a podcast they were doing where he was mocking of her understanding of a verse in the Bible. I could see that she was really going through something and thought it was depression and fear of him. Now I see that she was unraveling Gothard's teachings and what she herself was beginning to see. She is so visibly confident and lighter and it's glorious to see. I can see the relaxation in her. She is Free Indeed! I'm glad I was wrong about Jeremy and happy he let her learn the truth through her own study.

Wonderful program. I grew up in a very legalistic home as well. I attended a Bill Gothard Seminar as well in my youth. I thought that if i messed up, God would Zap me. I did not follow Christ out of love but out of fear. I learned too later on in life that rules don't save. Jesus does!! It is BY GRACE we are saved through faith, not of ourselves it is a gift of God lest anyone would boast. . I watched the Duggers for years it is so good to see how the Lord has worked in Jinger's life.

“Christianity is a relationship with a living God, it’s not a set of rules you throw on, and then you’re perfect.” Wow! I see God’s anointing on you, Jeremy and Jinger, to truly share the gospel (good news) of freedom through Christ Jesus, our Savior. Being raised in a legalistic, works-based church myself, I truly can appreciate and understand the stark contrast of learning the magnificent truth of what Christ set us free from. We can never do it ourselves.

Although not as rigid when it comes to dress for women, very legalistic on evangelism, baptism, one church (their church is the true church) missions, giving for missions, converting people! Also, I didn’t realize it at the time, but I see it now, just like her husband shared, they don’t teach the Bible they use the Bible! They pick topics, and then find a few verses to support their topic, the topic usually pertains to an agenda that the church has in mind for their interest. I am forever grateful to God for taking me out of a place that doesn’t understand or teach the true a gospel of God. I am now in a place that teaches the Bible verse by verse and it is such a blessing! Bless you all!

@@carolinapatriot9651 Yes. Eph 2:8-10 on salvation being by grace alone, not based on works. Acts 10:44-48 Peter describes these as "hav[ing] received the Holy Spirit just as we have”, before being baptized. Also, in Acts 16:31 Paul and Silas tell the Philippian jailer to “believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household," without mentioning baptism. If baptism was required to be saved, shouldn't it be clearly stated every time?

gosh i am so grateful jinger came forward with her story. i just came out of something similar a year or so ago & had so many of the same experiences. one thing that my "teacher" would say in regard to studying because of fear was "if you're in fear.. well, perfect love casts out fear. if you're feeling fear, it means you don't have God." as well as the fear of being reincarnated to a harder life because we didn't prove our love enough in this life (of course with scripture being used to back her claims..) - & just like you said, it kept us coming back to her teachings out of fear & needing more "knowledge & wisdom". i imagine jinger probably heard similar fear jargon. it's such a disheartening place to be. thank you so much for this episode!! 🙌🏼🖤🥲

No one knows where life will take them. When Jim Bob and his wife decided to enter into a very public life, via reality tv, they probably had no idea how things would turn out for the future. No one has a crystal ball, especially parents. As a parent myself I totally understand why they made the decisions they made to raise their children in such a close-knit, strict home. I did enjoy the show when it was on because I loved watching a huge family. But what I enjoy more is watching the kids grow and watching each of them develop into their own person. I do hope that all the siblings stay close and that they can come to terms with their upbringing while forgiving their parents.

Another relative at the time did not like what was taught. This was so good. Jinger you and Jeremy's heart seems so sweet and you said so many times going by the Word of God. I think we need to not assume things about people. Jana clearly has a mind of her own as evidenced by pictures of her in pants (not that there is anything inherently wrong with skirts). I personally think it’s wrong to say someone must think this or that simply because their life is different than the norm. We don’t know if fear has anything to do with her choosing to continue to live near her parents or not. Plenty of non IBLP people live with or near their parents, especially if single. She no longer lives in their home but in her own home she helped build on their land. I applaud Jinger for coming out of her wrong and fearful thinking about God, but I don’t think we should automatically assign those same feelings to her adult siblings without actually knowing if that’s what they think. My sister and I are very close, love the Lord and even go to the same church but the way we do things or even interpret or apply things may be very different at times.

BUT they also make young women of childbearing age take 5-10 year VOWS to stay single for God? Hmm... how does this all work I wonder. Imagine meeting your soulmate during this time. How WRETCHED! Then be kept apart for however many years because of some vow you were pushed into while not knowing full ramifications. Also what the Bible says about vows, I guess people weren’t encouraged to read that part for themselves. Just awful! I feel for ANYONE in a cult especially as a kid born into it with no choice!

Listening to these interviews with Jeremy and Jinger are helping me so much learn how to navigate my family as we've had several moments where we've had to stand on the truth of God's word, and I've faced that trepidation that Jinger talked about (that fear of losing our community), but the peace that comes from clinging to Christ fully, no matter the cost. I appreciate the grace that Jeremy and Jinger deliver their message with. Sometimes, when I'm faced with defending the truth, I wall up internally and say things with too cool of a spirit. I think it's my fear of vulnerability and I'm bracing myself for their attacks . . . So just seeing that grace and peace modeled in your guests today was a good reminder of how courage and strength in the Lord are available to those who are His - that we don't need to be walled up, but rather, looking for gospel opportunities in them. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve lived in Utah my entire life (58 yrs). Utah is where the Mormon church is headquartered. I’m a non-Mormon who recently started watching “Mormon Stories Podcast” on KZbin. The host interviews people who left the Mormon church. It caught my interest, so I thought what the heck. After watching quite a few episodes now, I’m blown away at how members from that organization describe dang near what Jinger describes. I always knew there were strict rules most members of the church abided too, but I never understood what most of them have felt inside, some for many years, which is fear. 😔 My heart is so proud of Jinger for following her own spiritual journey. She is a beacon of light for others, and I pray that others find their strength and do the same. I pray that others will be willing to take a good look at who they’re really following, because it matters. 🙏😌💛

I married a man from this culture. I had no idea how rules, guilt, shame, facade and punishment are the basis of their experience of God. We talked alot about Christianity before marriage all the right things were said. After 14 years of frustration and chronic illness finally the truth is known, I have always been a dissapointment in most areas because I was all God thought he deserved for a spouse. Resentment our whole marriage all the while saying whatever a "godly" husband would say. And the confusion continues with I now have "biblical" grounds for divorce but since he wants to have the facade of changed heart, its me ruining his life and Ill always be his spouse in Gods eyes and he could only remarry me or I would have to die for him to be free to marry another. He is not opposed to the latter at all, but only for the inconvenience of some to care for what he believes are "his" gifts from God(our children) in the meantime while finding someone else. This cult is a thief that is here to steal, kill and destroy. I would so appreciate prayers for myself and children as we navigate separation.
