In Fargo, Steve Buscemi's role was so large and integral and in Miller's Crossing, Buscemi's character spoke a mile a minute and probably had the most lines even though he wasn't on screen as much as many other characters. As a joke, in The Big Lebowski, the Coen Brothers gave Buscemi a character who couldn't get in a word edgewise.

I grew up in Minnesota, and this movie is basically like a documentary, it's so accurate... I literally had to call my Grandpa after seeing this to ask if he was in it. The old man shovelling his drive, talking about tending bar at Ecklund and Scmedlunds, looked and sounded just like him at the time. He said it wasn't him, but I still have my doubts, lol

One thing I remember about Siskel and Ebert's review when the movie came out was one of them saying that they felt the snow was really another character.
@billhicks6449
@billhicks6449 3 жыл бұрын
@Robert Juzefski it's actually a misconception. Minnesota doesn't get near the snowfall the states east get as we're the last place before the great lakes create lake effect snow. However, we get the brunt of the cold as even the great lakes mitigate the cold. So whatever snow does fall, ain't going anywhere.

The accent and special way he actors are talking is called “Minnesota Nice.” Many Minnesotans were insulted when the movie came out, but if you look past that, you will see the Minnesotan characters (like Marge) had an appreciation for the simple things in life and the criminals wasted their lives away.

@@OctoKrool - I saw someone run out like he ran from the police interview. This was one of those true crime stories. He killed his wife and had her in a plastic container in his garage. He was being interviewed for television telling everyone how his wife was missing and he was hoping to find her. The police are searching his house. He sees them go into the garage and runs and gets in his car and drives off right in the middle of the interview. It was all on camera lol. I guess he was hoping that they wouldn't search the garage? He had tried to dispose of the body a couple times but he kept panicking and bringing it back. Then when the police got a search warrant it was right there in the garage. He was so bad at crime.

Thirded. Still their top movie, though it is now a crowded list of contenders. Only problem with Miller's Crossing as a reaction subject is that the first time you watch it, there is a lot to keep up with in terms of plot. It's only once you've got the plot nailed down that you can enjoy the film fully. So I wouldn't want to watch someone's reaction first time through, but the second, when they're enjoying the fantastic dialogue and the depth of the characters.

If you ever did wonder - the Mike Yanagita scene is in fact very integral to the film. Marge is presented as an intelligent officer, but she can be very trusting and a little naive about the nature of people. She believed Mike's story, and was shocked after learning Mike had lied, and so convincingly. So this in turn propels her to return to Jerry, as she considers she may have been too trusting of him, and because the evidence does point to a car business. It's a sweet, little overlooked subplot that actually leads to the climax.
@NoelleMar
@NoelleMar 8 ай бұрын
Her believing Mike isn’t proof of her being naive or too trusting. People are bad at telling when people lie - even when they think they aren’t. There’s no reason to think someone you knew lied about getting married and losing his wife. We only know she was wrong to believe him after the fact and because it’s a movie. She’s perceptive about the characters and much observant than most people, not to mention most police. So no it’s quite the opposite. She seems to understand human nature quite well. And even when you understand logically why people do certain things, it can still strike you as so nonsensical. That’s why she found what these guys were doing to be unbelievable. And sure, maybe it’s because she’s too well-adjusted. But that doesn’t make her naive. People aren’t flawed or to blame when people lie to them or for not being omniscient.

I recall hearing a story about a woman from a foreign country, I don't remember which one, actually flew to the United States, went to Fargo during the winter and actually froze to death looking for the case of cash. True story.

This is my favorite of their movies. It has the perfect blend of cast, characters, humor, and 'this isn't going to go well' in it. I like to entertain thoughts every now and then about who would find the money after the snow melted, and what did they do with it? A farmer? Someone driving by and seeing the case just laying there?

24:30 Quick note on the Mike Yanagita story line. Many people thought that the scene had absolutely no relevance to the movie. In actuality, Mike and Jerry's behaviours were eerily similar: exaggerated behaviours, changing the topic, etc. After eating her breakfast, you can see a light bulb go off in her head while driving, liking this supposed non-sequitir event to her investigation. This is when she decides to return to the dealership to probe Jerry once more.

I love Frances McDormand (Margie). William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi are all so good. It’s excellent writing and acting when it looks like real people. Such a good movie and they got the accents right. Blood Simple is another good Coen Brothers movie. So glad you liked it. All about greed. Even though it’s not true you can see how it could be true. Everything goes wrong. Keep reacting!

This kind of stop happens 10 times a day in the real world. Marge (Frances McDormand) is married to Joel Cohen, they met in the Cohen's first-ever movie, "Blood Simple" which I think is their 2nd best movie behind 'No Country for Old Men". She has thus played in quite a few of their movies, of course. I think she's been in like 7 or 8 of their movies. I am pretty sure the Cohens "STORYBOARD" all their scenes out like Hitchcock, thus they get exactly what they want from the actors, hence in many cases, it does seem like real life, because they have seen it all storyboarded.

Fun fact: when Peter Stormare's character hits Frances McDormand with the log at 29:34, it really breaks her leg. You can see the log bounce off her leg, ouch! But she stays in character :)

Check out the Fargo TV show. It answers what happened to the money in the first season (Starring BIlly Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman). For other Coen brothers try "Burn after Reading", "Miller's Crossing", "Barton Fink", "O Brother, where art thou", just to name a few. You can't go wrong with a Coen brothers movie.
