The time loop duration is a big question mark. Estimates range from 10 years (originally stated by Ramis himself) to 70 to 80 years by Phil himself in one of the original drafts of the movie. Then there's the buddhist stuff Ramis picked up from his wife at the time, which says it takes 10,000 years for someone to evolve to the next level etc. Then there are those who say it's more like 35 years. It's wild how much time he may have been in the loop.

Ned is indeed the dark lord Satan himself, who trapped Phil in this time loop until Phil finally bought his insurance. Phil never once bought the insurance from Ned until the very end of the movie and then finally when Phil got the insurance the time loop ended.

Its worse when you remember he didn't have any instant resets he really did live the same day back up to that moment to get the right answer with the girl. It just didnt show him repeat each step exactly the same. He didn't just hate his job he hated that town specifically and the event. He was forced to relive the day he hated most until he broke the cycle by becoming a better person. He grew to love the town and grew to be genuinely nice to everyone. the amount of time spent reliving the day is interesting. i believe the first script was like 10,000 years or some shit. I think the most solid answer from Harold Ramis was it was maybe about 10 years. I tend to think it's a bit more and either way, a long fuckin time and crazy to think about. Just thinking how long each act would have taken. 3 quick ones is, learning to ice sculp. from no knowledge to a msater sculpter, how long wouldd that take?!? 2, go from being tone deaf to playing piano like ray charles. 3, knowing everything about everyone in town. The montage of him killing himself makes a lot more sense and also feels more dark when you actually think how long Phil was stuck there. Side note. It has been called the most spiritual hollywood movie. here is an excerpt from an article touching on it. “Groundhog Day”, as an expression, has become shorthand for the concept of spiritual transcendence. As such, the film has become a favorite of some Buddhists who see its themes of selflessness and rebirth as reflections of their own spiritual messages. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, it has been seen as a representation of purgatory. “Connors goes to his own version of hell, but since he’s not evil it turns out to be purgatory, from which he is released by shedding his selfishness and committing to acts of love,” wrote Jonah Goldberg. “Meanwhile, Hindus and Buddhists see versions of reincarnation here, and Jews find great significance in the fact that Connors is saved only after he performs mitzvahs (good deeds) and is returned to earth, not heaven, to perform more.” It has even been described by some religious leaders as the “most spiritual film of our time”. “The curse is lifted when Bill Murray blesses the day he has just lived,” wrote the critic Rick Brookhiser. “And his reward is that the day is taken from him. Loving life includes loving the fact that it goes.” sorry for the length.

Originally, Harold Ramis had said 10 years, but later revised it to 30. So for 30 years..... Every day.... 'Back in the day...' when there weren't streaming services, and a channel(s) would play something, no matter when, they may program it to play in the middle of the night... there was a line people sometimes used to describe such flicks: "...no matter what I'm doing, whenever (flipping channels) I would come across this playing, no matter where in the movie it is, I would just stop and sit back and watch... right to the end." Another term was 'comfy blanket'.This would be such a flick. So glad to see you enjoy this gem.

Great reaction guys, I honestly love this movie. Just so you know the town where they filmed this has a huge festival every Groundhog Day and people dress up like the characters, some of the cast members sometimes show up, and there are complete strangers just acting out scenes in costume at the locations. I think what Phil really had to do to move on was to sincerely care and do for others instead of himself. Also, Rita fell for him when he wasn't chasing her but showing who he had become as a person. I worked in hospitality (waiter, bartender) for 15 years and I always taught the new staff to talk with people not at them. Don't use scripting but personalize each experience with your guests and you take care of them like it was your family that you were taking care of. You must have a desire to take care of people. You can never fake realness. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

Bill Murray established the "Classic Bill Murray Era" with "Meatballs," and it took off from there. Also contributing to Classic Murray are: "Caddyshack," "Stripes," "Ghostbusters," "Little Shop of Horrors" (just a cameo, but still...), "Scrooged," "Ghostbusters II," "What About Bob," and "The Man Who Knew Too Little." The other movies he's made feel more like filler. Well, to me. Others may have differing opinions. But by all means, you should really watch the ones I've listed.

In an original draft of the script it was said that Phil was stuck in the loop for 10,000 years. Ramis, the director once said that it was 10 years, but there have actually been people who tried to work out the math by calculating how long it would take the average person to perfect that many skills and memorize every event in the town. Regarding your point about practicing something a little bit and not long hours when you're first learning: I took a course in piano pedagogy in college (teaching piano), and I learned that practicing for only 15 minutes each day is effective, whereas practicing for an hour every four days is not. In other words, cramming doesn't work. Consistency is the thing. I've also learned that if you learn something right before you go to sleep, you retain it better. Your subconscious explores it while you sleep. So if you have to cram, then get a good night's sleep.

I like that Bill generally puts his older brother is his films, in this one he's the older guy in the top hat w/ the "rough" voice. You'll catch him in a lot of Bill Murray film.

Bill Murray doesn't get enough credit as a comedy master. most people remember his as a ghostbuster and nothing more, but he really is up there with the greats.

Another time loop like that took place on the Star Trek: TNG episode, "Cause and Effect," guest-starring Kelsey Grammer. When the old man died, the kid he'd later save from falling out of the tree was in the background with a broken leg.

Phil thinks he can manipulate everything during Groundhogday, simply because he supposedly knows everything about it. But the moment he realizes that he cannot save this poor homeless man, that's when he actually starts to turn, and tries to make everything else for the better.

The town this was filmed in, Woodstock, Illinois, has a celebration and prognostication every Groundhog Day with its own groundhog. There are a bunch of other events like a free showing of this movie at the local theater, ice (actually might be wood if I recall) sculpting/carving in the town park square, a toast to world peace where vermouth with a twist is served and drinkers get a commemorative groundhog day shot glass. In 2019 the actor who played ned ryerson was there and did a Q&A and was just around celebrating. They have tours of the town where things were shot, including the bed and breakfast which actually is one in real life. The town is pretty cool and has a few notable figures who have lives there. Orson Welles lived there before he got big and the creator slash writer of dick tracy lived there for decades. Part of trains planes and automobiles was also shot there. Basically right next to the small local theater (not an AMC or regal, much quainter) where they do the free showing of groundhog day is a cool ass mural which stretches an entire alleyway with depictions of the previously mentioned people and cool shots of groundhog day stuff.

This movie had such an impact on me for my love of movie theaters, I often wish that the old movie theater I saw this wasn't leveled down... To this day it would've been so perfect for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

That was the BEST reaction on this internet circle I've seen to this wonderful film Groundhog Day. You guys really (finally) got all the comedy courtesy of the comedic genius Bill Murray - working brilliantly in tandem with his friend and partner-in-crime, the late writer/director of this film Harold Ramis. Murray's costar in Ghostbusters. Surely heaps of Murray's work here was improv. And Ramis obviously went with it. Abd I think you guys got the romance too Will watch this reaction again I'm sure

According to a fan theory, the amount of days in the time loop that Phil endured lasted about 3,994 days; which is equivalent to 10 Years, 11 Months, 1 Week, 2 Days, 3 Hours, 53 Minutes and 20 Seconds, which is a very long time..

most theory places it between 30 to 50 years. they say it takes at least 20 years to become a master sculpter. and who knows how long it was before he decided to even take that skill up. add piano lessons. another 10,000 hours. and clearly it was a long time before he even started to learn these skills after a long bout with depression... i figure at least 40 to 50 years.
