Honestly, what I love about Moana's gramma is that she didn't give her a pep speech, didn't try to hype her up. She admitted that the task she gave Moana was probably too big, and that whatever she decided to do from there, she'd be beside her~ It was such a breath of fresh air!
@JeshuaSquirrel3 ай бұрын
That is my favorite moment of this movie. Yes, if you feel a task is literally impossible to complete, it is okay to stop. And in that freedom and total support of a loved one, Moana found the courage and the confidence to continue. That is one of the best messages in a Disney film in a long time.

It’s implied that the heart of Tefiti grants immortality to the person who holds it. Grandma Tala was in good health when she had the heart in her possession, but as soon as she gave it to Moana, she started to get weaker. Also explains how Moana, a normal human, survived the fall into Lalotai, because she would’ve died on impact of the water.

My son is nonverbal/ non communicative autistic. This was the first and one of the only films aside from the Disney short Lava, that he sits and watches the whole way through. Worked out that the music and visuals from this and lava are one of the only things that can’t get him out of a meltdown. So naturally I went and got Tefiti and the two volcanoes from Lava tattooed on my right arm which has now started a Disney Pixar sleeve. Whenever he’s upset he comes up to me and taps my arm so he can see the tattoo, he might not be able to talk properly yet but that base level of understanding is amazing to have. Here's an interesting fact, all the stuff mentioned in "You're Welcome" are deeds that Maui actually did in Polynesian Mythology. Some of my favorites are 2 in particular. However, before I mention them I want to say this for context. Maui wasn't abandoned, he was cast out to sea because his parents thought he was stillborn since he was born premature, however the waves of the ocean formed him into a living baby before being returned. Maui was also the youngest of 6 siblings, 4 brothers and a sister. Now for my favorite myths: 1) Maui wasn't the best fisherman, so his father gifted him with a magic fishing hook and line. Wanting to try it out, Maui got his brothers to come with him out to sea on a canoe. Once out in the middle of the ocean, Maui cast the line and immediately caught something, but it was way too heavy to bring up onto the boat, so Maui told his brothers to start rowing to land while Maui hold the line. However, Maui soon learned that it wasn't a fish he caught it was LAND being pulled up from the ocean floor. Maui wanted to see how far he could take this but knew that if his brothers looked back it would ruin the momentum and cause the line to loosen, so he told them not to look back or stop. For several days, Maui's brothers rowed and eventually, one of them got curious and looked back to see they were literally hauling land. This ruined the momentum, and caused the fishing line to not only loose the land it was hooked on, but it went flying into the night sky where it became the constellation (the same we see in the film). The land Maui fished from the ocean floor would become the islands we know today as Hawaii, which, if you looked at on a map does look like it was dragged out from the water. 2) Maui's mom was upset that the sun would fly through the sky too fast. Why? Because whenever she did laundry, the clothes wouldn't dry enough while the sun was going too fast. So Maui decided to do something about this. What did he do? He got his brothers to go to the edge of the earth and ambush the sun, lassoing it or getting a net on the sun. Maui's brothers then pulled it down while Maui took the jawbone of an animal and used it as a club to BEAT THE SUN until it agreed to stay up in the sky for longer.

@jwhite-1471Ай бұрын
@@Eto-Ezio People have always mixed mythology and history. Real-life historical events (especially negative ones, like drought, famine, etc.) are usually built right into myths, for purposes of assigning meaning to those events. It's like global flood myths, which exist in a crazy number of mythologies and religions; most cultures have experienced a flood at some time or other, so when it happens to a culture with a strong story-sharing culture (should turn that word into a drinking game), it gets woven in seamlessly with their myths (which they may were also real events), as the act of a monster, angry god, or some mythic enemy. Same thing with things like volcanos erupting, eclipses, etc.

Fun fact about newborn turtles: a big thing that's always made clear is that if you're going to help them find the water, you absolutely cannot carry them there. They have to find it on their own. The scene at the beginning is essentially how Moanas journey ends up going out on the ocean. She may have been pointed in the right direction, but ultimately she had to do it on her own.
@katsukirenka16293 ай бұрын
A theory that I really like is that Moana's father was also chosen by the ocean when he was younger. It explains why he doesn't want Moana near the water even though fishing is one of their livelihoods and likely all the children would learn to swim in safer shallow waters. He isn't surprised by what Moana says about the heart of Te Fiti and seems to recognise it when she holds it up. Having his friend die trying to help him complete that mission, it's no wonder he convinces himself that it's just a rock and none of it is real. Admitting that it's real would be admitting he failed and his friend died for nothing, instead of being able to label it an accident. He knows the call of the sea and what it can cost, and he won't let his daughter fall into the trap he believes it is.
@samuelvincent5573 ай бұрын
It's my, personal, head canon that the Grandma was originally chosen by the ocean to bear the heart and she turned it down to stay with the village and regrets her decision. That is why she took so much care to educate Moana and prepare her for when she would have to make the same choice, and the ocean, clearly, liked her too. And that may be why she, immediately, came back as a manta to be Moana's guide. It's possible that her Father was given the same choice and when his friend died he threw the heart back. Which would explain why he wasn't surprised to see Moana with it. He knew what it was.

Everything with Moana's grandma makes me sob.
@kobemarion11373 ай бұрын
Lol, I see a different kind of comparison with those two: The folks at Disney saw The Lion King as a nothing special appetizer for what they believed to be their biggest hit with Pocahontas. In actuality, TLK ended up getting a better reception than Pocahontas in every way, lol. Same thing happened with Moana. They had high expectations for it and saw their previous film, Zootopia, as a side thing that they didn't expect to get as big a positive result as it did.

In case you guys are interested, the music is written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the same guy who wrote the music for Hamilton and Encanto
@alanfoster65893 ай бұрын
Actually, much of it stems from and was written by Opetaia Foa'i, of the Polynesian band Te Vaka. Who also sings in the film (note the Tokelauan singing in "We know the way". Among others. But Lin-Manuel is...Lin-Manuel. And that name sells tickets. No knock on him, but credit where credit is due. Opetaia is working on Moana 2. Lin-Manuel is not.
@AdamNisbett3 ай бұрын
@@alanfoster6589the accurate picture I think is somewhere between what is implied by the original comment and your own. The music and lyrics were a collaboration between Miranda, Foa’i and Mark Mancini. The work on it occurred before Hamilton came out (Lin Manuel was working on Moana and Hamilton simultaneously), so Lin Manuel Miranda wasn’t the huge name it is now. But while the whole thing certainly wasn’t a solo operation my Lin Manuel, he also did write several of the substantial songs (How Far I’ll Go, You’re Welcome are lyrics and music by Miranda only, for Shiny, Miranda did the lyrics and collaborated with Mancini on music. For the other songs, Miranda I think is responsible for the English lyrics adaptation from the Foa’i version.) The non-English songs are definitely Foa’i credit though, not Miranda. Miranda also sings with Foa’i in We Know the Way. The fact that Lin Manual Miranda has turned into a huge name is most likely why he isn’t part of Moana 2 as he’s busy with tons of other projects.

So fun fact from wahine Māori, Polynesian cultures do vary in their names for deities, in Te Reo we don’t call her Te Fiti though we do have a similar deity called Papatūānuku, she is basically considered the creator of all life. However! Māui’s name rarely ever changes and most of his stories are the same. The lands of Polynesia change and so do the climates so the deities who represent them are given new names however the two consistencies are Māui the trickster and Moana being used to refer to the ocean. (I live on one of the islands that Māui is said to have pulled out of the ocean). Another neat fact is the parallels between the film in real life, a lot of the plant vitality on Polynesian islands comes from the fact that they’re volcanic islands (most of Polynesia exists within the ring of fire which is just a ring of active volcanos), volcanic sediment in soil makes it incredibly fertile. If they wanted to remove all life from Te Fiti they could’ve made a stone monster but they didn’t, they made Te Ka an active volcano.

One particularly dark theory posits that Moana died during the storm at the beginning, so she encountered the demigod Maui when she washed up on the island he had been trapped on for millennia. The Disney movie fan theory holds a bit of water as Moana doesn't encounter another human character until the end after she was supposedly brought back to life by Te Fiti. plus, all that she encounters were spirits and monsters and how she was able to access the realm of monsters is because she isn't alive, that could only be seen in the spirit world.
