I got to Dune and was so blown away by it that I made my family watch it with me in preparation for going to the movie that was just a month or two from release My stepdad ended up having a medical emergency (almost blacked out from an ulcer) during the start of the movie, so I went back and rewatched it with them both to support the movie and cause it was sick and I wanted to see it again

The worms are attracted to rhythms. Walking, thumpers, heavy machinery. A shield works by generating a field that is essentially an electrical cycle repeated thousands of times per second. A rhythm that fast drives the worms into a killing frenzy.

My dad's only knowledge of Dune was Kyle MacLachan and big worms. He never gets into sci-fi or fantasy. On a boring night I showed him this movie. He ended up buying pre-sale tickets to Dune Part 2 in theaters. Dune Part 2 is as perfect a sci-fi movie as you will ever see.

Dune was a huge influence of most modern sci-fi, especially Star Wars and Warhammer 40K. It didn't invent the idea of a galaxy wide empire, but the Bene Gesserit sisters directly inspired the Jedi, for example, and the political struggles and constant war gave rise to the condition of Warhammer, among many other franchises. Like Lord of the Rings, it's a foundational cornerstone.

I’m sure some in the comments have mentioned this but there are no aliens in the Dune universe. Thinking Machines like AI are also forbidden as well. Basically, some of the people in this universe are borderline almost superhuman. The Bene Gesserit being a big example of it. They’re very skilled warriors, engineers, philosophers and everything else in between. They have the ability to choose the sex and gender of their children but are normally told to bear only female children. Their most known ability is “The Voice.” Almost no one can withstand it and those that do are very rare to come by. Only women had this ability until Paul came along. The politics, world building and lore is some of my favorite parts of the Dune universe and it’s very complex. Hans Zimmer did an amazing job on the music as well. I listen to them almost daily. So good!

There aren't aliens sure, but the Ixians and the Tleilaxu, as well as the fish-warriors are highly mutated to the point of being an alien species. The navigators as well, though they start fully human. The Harkonnens seem to be not a very mutated faction in the books, but the movie portrayal is slightly different.

In the book, the Voice is a close-held secret and can be taught (thus Jessica taught Paul). It is not a superhuman ability but a concentrated extension of Bene Gesserit training, which teaches people how to observe others in the most minute ways - body language, psychology, mannerisms, tones of voice etc, in order to manipulate them. The Voice is not one specific way of speaking, but rather is a specific way to speak to the specific target person once in such a way that they cannot help but obey. The Voice is the exact tone/way of delivery that will speak to the person intimately (their psychology etc), whether that is to be commanded or subtly directed, which the Bene Gesserit understands from their observations of the person. For example, in the book, there were warnings of a betrayal, and Thufir Hawat (the mentant) believed the traitor could only be Jessica. When Jessica confronts Hawat about the matter, she deliberately demonstrates the Voice to him in order to show him that, had she wanted to kill the Duke, she could do it easily. She tells him "now you've seen the fist in the Bene Gesserit glove". Hawat is horrified at the power, but she proves her point. Paul is only 15 in the book, and he not only trained as a Bene Gesserit but also as a mentant (those who serve the function of human computers since thinking computers are now outlawed). These training streams already make Paul VERY formidable, but the spice melage effects people's minds in a variety of ways (e.g. mentants use large quantities of it to boost their mathematical abilities in order to perform the complexities of interstellar travel - imagine EVERYTHING in space is moving and you're also moving, and you have to do the physics to not crash into anything - and they become Guild Navigators. In Paul, a Bene Gesserit and mentant - the spice extends his consciousness even more (e.g. he already had prescient dreams on Caladan. After moving to Arrakis where spice is in everything, his prescience - the ability to know the future - becomes broader and more accurate). He knows what will happen because he is making so many minute observations about everything that he understands all the permutations of what COULD happen following every other thing that happens. Then, during the events of the next movie, his mind is extended EVEN MORE. This is why he is the Kwizatz Haderach, the Supreme Being.

Dune was published in like 1965 so yeah it came way before SW. Dune is Game of Thrones in space. The best way to describe it. So many factions require spice- Spacing guild for navigation, Bene Gesserit to make Reverend Mothers, the Fremen aka Free Men of Arrakis. The Empire is like feudal houses - so they all serve the Emperor but he didn't like how popular House Atreides was getting. So he helped the ancient enemy of Atreides, House Harkonnen secretly. There's a LOT of ground to cover that the books go over that had to be condensed for the movie. Paul is the chosen one, but like Dr. Strange he can see thousands or possible outcomes So that is why it doesn't always come true, but mostly does. He does see a Holy war being waged in his name and can do nothing to stop it. It must happen for humanity to evolve. Chani is his love interest and she plays a pivotal role in his ascent in the books. She accepts her role willingly, unlike in the movie. I'm sure that was a more "Woke" idea to give her more backbone. Basically the spice is the crude oil, and keeps the universe going. And Fremen are Arabs.

@@system0fadowner251 I found her to be antagonistic, and was constantly waiting for it to become okay, when are we working towards a common goal here? Lets get rid of the Harkonnens, and build the Paradise of Liet spoke of. But it never went that way. Instead and maybe because I have read the books multiple times, and have "expectations" her character didn't evolve. Just stayed the same, scowling bitchy girl. So it was hard for me to find her to be a romantic interest. That's what happens when you change a character too drastically. I don't mind a little literary license. Instead you got a Chani that apparently is an Atheist too, on top of being a SJW. It doesn't make sense, and breaks the "Show, don't tell..." rule of storytelling. I know I'm mixing book with movie material here. But religion is all they have, outside of being terrorists on the people raiding their planet. But for a lot of fans, this comes across as character assassination. You can't change the story, if the story has them getting together and having kids. That's a fundamental flaw that is now setup for Dune Messiah. And that book already has a different tone altogether.

I don't think the Dune novels are required to enjoy these movies. But for anyone that enjoys these movies, you would LOVE the novels. There is SO MUCH MORE context and story they couldn't fit in the movies. Then you start to notice the dozens of hints and references to story bits that they couldn't fully explain in the movie. Again, these movies are incredibly enjoyable WITHOUT reading the novels. But the movies make the novel more enjoyable, and the novel makes rewatching the movies more enjoyable.

The acting is insane in this movie. The issue with 'actors' like Momoa or Bautista is that they are pretty much always type cast in the same limited physical primal character/role. They do have a hard time expressing/conveying any emotions believably other than the bare minimum ones required for the job. Even their vocal range/expression is too limited, so there's hardly any expectation and surprise in their performance, the audience usually is left to believe they play themselves more or less. Worse, if they would start displaying incredible acting skills, playing widely different characters, the audience would most likely be confused and majorly disturbed and most likely not accepting. It really is a one way street for them. However, I find ALL the cast are doing such an incredible job making this movie an extremely believable experience. My favourite performances are from Rebecca Furgeson and Timothee Chalamet.

If there was one context I wanted to share with people from the book that isn't covered in the movies (and there are dozens of these), it's that.... Paul's visions are more like calculations, predictions based on data he learns. It's done extremely, extremely well, so well it seems mystical. Plus the spice is amplifying it. What he sees isn't always true because he can see multiple paths forward, and knows what decisions to make to guide him down different paths. Some paths terrify him, like seeing the army worshipping his name at the shrine of his father's skull (what he screamed about in the tent)

Frank Herbert, whose book is the basis for this movie (the best adaptation for far), began researching things for this story in the late 1950's. The book was published in 1965. Spice is an exaggerated analog for any resource upon which an entire civilization depends and which is controlled by only a few, in particular oil in the case of our current dependency on it. It is just one of the many themes explored in the book Dune.

The healer knows he will be betrayed thats whats makes his decision more tragic as he says the Harkonens are toturing his wife "they take her apart like a doll". He know that if he does what they ask they will kill him and his wife as she is no longer useful. He didnt do it to save her life he did it to pull the plug.

There’s 6 mainline Dune books before the death of Frank Herbert. The Dune movies cover the first book. His son and Kevin J. Anderson have written about 20 since Frank’s death. They’re considered spin-offs and vary in quality. The mainline 6 books written by Frank are what most fans consider to be “Dune” and the rest as either non essential or supplemental.

In the book, Paul describes his visions like looking out over the desert. You can see the tops of the sand dunes (the moments in time that he can see), but you can't see what is in the valleys (what causes the moment in time to happen) until you get closer. In the movie they portrayed his visions as alternate moments. Take Jamis, Paul sees him and Jamis being friends and him teaching Paul the Fremen ways, He also sees Jamis killing Paul and Paul killing Jamis. The same with Chani, he sees him and Chani together, he sees Chani killing him etc.

Paul is the result of several disciplines. Hundreds of generations of intricate breeding, Bene Gesserit training in physical control (he can bend his little toe without moving any other muscle in his body), and the basics of Mentat training. Mentats are human computers. Because AI and advanced computing are forbidden (long story), certain humans are trained to do complex computations and equations solely in their heads. Paul has the ability to control his body and mind to a superhuman degree. And that's *before* he's exposed to the spice.

On that note too... the Bene Gesserit told Jessica to bear a DAUGHTER. That daughter was supposed to breed with a Harkonnen who was similarly genetically tailored... the son of THAT union was to become the "chosen one". But Leto wanted a son and Jessica loved Leto so Jessica bore a son, against the BG's wishes. Hence why the BG are mad at Jessica and doubtful of Paul... it messed up their plans. They do have a contingency, just not as solid. They have a Bene Gesserit acolyte who could marry the Harkonnen Jessica's daughter was supposed to have bred with. Thats what you'll see in the 2nd part, though its almost unnecessary as the reason for the contingency wasnt made that clear in the movies.

YAY!!! Finally! I knew you guys would like this one. There's an incredible amount that had to be left out of the movie, but it's interesting and pertinent stuff. I highly recommend checking out some of the videos on TY about the Bene Gesserit, Mentats, the Fremen, the life cycle of the worms, etc. So, so much. It will flesh out the story for you. All of Frank Herberts Dune books are amazing and span about 5,000 years. I recommend Quinn's Ideas has my favorite Dune content. But Nerd Cookies and The Lorebrarians also put out great Dune videos. 36:10 Something to keep in mind about Paul's level of training and luck and foresight here... He was taught to fight with shields, in which quick strikes are repelled, ao you have to strike slower. Too slow and the opponent can dodge or block. But here, without shields, everything he taught is wrong. Here, quick strikes are not blocked, they are fatal. And yet Paul still manages to get to a final strike position 3 or 4 times against an older and stronger opponent who is a respected warrior. On paper, Paul is dead almost immediately, and he bested Jamis multiple times in one fight.

The original novel was published in 1965, the first film adaptation of Dune was released in 1984, a TV movie series was released in the erly 2000s adapting the first 3 novels of the Dune saga - "Dune" and "Children of Dune". The worms of Arrakis were conceived long before movies like Tremors.

After waiting a year and half, i finally decided to watch Dune Part 1 after my friend kept suggesting it to me, saying its right up my alley. He couldn’t’ve been more spot on, and I was fully committed to learning about the lore and where it came from. Im up to the 4th Dune book in the series right now, “God Emperor of Dune” and its the most intriguing Sci-Fi series I’ve read, so no wonder a lot of early Sci-Fi films we’ve all seen took bits of inspiration from Frank Herbert’s Dune books. I also heard there’s a Sci-Fi book that inspired Frank Herbert to write Dune as well. Books are very important, I suggest people to just read what you find interesting and grabs your attention.

There is a scene in this movie, where the Atreides household are packing up for their journey to Arrakis/Dune, and in one scene they're packing a painting into a box, which i believe is a painting of The Duke's father (Paul's grandfather, who was killed while fighting bulls). If i am correct, and my eyes did not deceive me, the person on that painting looked an awful lot like Sir Patrick Stewart (who has also starred in the 1980's movie version of Dune in the role of Gurney Halleck, who, in this version is played by Josh Brolin) !

And don't forget the recently aired HBO spin off tv series "Dune Prophecy". Slow burn but awesome if you love this Dune world. Set a few centuries before the Dune movies and looks at how the Bene Gesserit get powerful.

Paul said his visions don't usually happen exactly like he sees them. They're meant to be glimpses of possible futures. In one he saw Duncan die, and it did happen, just like it turned out that he was right and his mother was pregnant like in his vision, and both her and the baby had blue eyes, which means they've been living in Arrakis among the Fremen and exposed to the Spice for months. But he also had a vision where the dude he kills at the end of the movie teaches him how the Fremen survive in the desert, which won't happen because that future where that guy lives and they become friends didn't come to pass. So which of his visions will turn out to be accurate and which won't and how much, is kind of still up in the air because he doesn't know how to tell them apart. The movie is structured in a way the clearly sets up the sequel because it just covers the first half of the novel, so the story is only half-told at this point.

Wow I love how excited you guys were.. and also caught some details at your first viewing. I bet the comments if you read will give you some more info to make things clearer so I'm not gonna do that here. But wanted to comment about your comment about the acting and couldn't agree more.. the genre or this type of movie might not seem like one demanding actors to try hard or emote, but actually the story goes deep and so many nuances that will easily be missed if wasn't handled/acted well. So Dune really has IT with these stars.. and Timothee is amazing in it and perfectly fits the role. If you like his acting I'd definitely suggest you also react to his other movies (many people knew him from Call Me By Your Name, that got him his first Oscar nom) but if that's not your type he has plenty other movies too!

20:30 You can close the wings?! Yeah. There's a Dune addon for MSFS2024, and you can fly the ornithopter. In case you haven't noticed - Dune is an incredibly complex story, and in Villeneuve's films, most of it is told between the lines.

18:33, Gurney and the other Atreides soldiers were not being extra. Remember Duke Leto is their head of state for their House. Nobody walks up on a President or Prime Minister without asking permission and being searched first. Kynes was a little too presumptuous. For all Gurney knew she could have been working for the Harkonnens.
