I enjoyed watching Bill shove Duke over when Duke was trying to shy away from the excavator. Ken has a few more pounds on him to be able to do that more easily, but Bill is one strong horse.

Re the weaning, right over a good fence is quietest, where they can see and touch noses, and the mare comes and goes, no yelling, just no suckling, and certainly no stress, not horses or the humans who have to listen to it. Eventually the mare ceases to bother, as the milk dries up. The foal realises life will not come to an end just because there is no milk. Greetings from Australia.

Jim and Brenda, great video today, I really appreciate your training strategy with Duke . When he shied away from the excavator . You made a great move and tied Duke and Bill to the excavator. Which will hopefully solve his issue. I really enjoyed how well Duke is really in step with Bill. .

Nice work Jim, i love your Tamarack posts. I have tried to get away with less cuts on the point but the way you do it, i find is best, also love the way you use your steel bar to pilot a hole for the post. I remember watching the old timers do that when i was little and you got it down pat. We used cedar posts and dug holes with a fence post hole digger, which is work as someone commented. Our farm was/is on an old cedar shake mill so we would dig holes and often times come up with alot of sawdust from the old mill, so we had to pound in rocks to tighten up the post. I was the little one so i would fill in the hole and tamp it down and put the big rock down for the corner post to keep the barbed wire tight. We had both barbed wire and electric fence. Nice work, nice logs, and nice horses. The horses are coming along well Jim, i think your in a good place going into winter. Still enjoying your videos after all these episodes. Thank you very Much. Still learning. Reading your comments,, is fun , you must really enjoy the positive energy from your audience. We are so Blessed to be at this place in time. To God the Glory. Thank you also to Brenda, I need to go see Abby, i see her videos pop up and i just smile, she is really something, so inspiring. Liv'n and Lov'n

I drove willow posts from a stone picking box on a wooden wheeled wagon with a 16 lb maul rainy days the summers I was 15 and 16. The boss taught me to drive the posts instead of pounding them to prevent splitting or mushrooming them. They supported 3 strands of barbed wire to contain cattle. Only electric fences I knew back then were at my grand parents farm. That was powered by a home built charger driven by a 6 volt tractor battery that was kept charged from the 32 volt wind charger system.

Exactly what i was thinking. Tie duke to the excavator if you can get him that close. Let him decide it's not scary. There was a time when they were promoting large hitches for field work. They used halter bridles to save time harnessing. Bit just snapped to halter cheek pieces. 😊.
@royolstad8532Ай бұрын
I've got a breaker bar just like yours. It's an old railroad "track lining: bar, where a bunch of guys with bars jimmy the long steel rails into place to be spiked down onto the ties. Mine is bent just like yours, too. It's too heavy for me since I got older, so I use an old 6' miining drill. nice and light, and works great.

@linda97639Ай бұрын
Just a thought on why Duke may view your excavator differently than the others that were at your farm. Your little excavator is enclosed with glass that will reflect the light and even the trees etc and as he moves that reflection will change. That said, he still will need to get used to it. Tying him to it was a good idea.

PG here, wonderful video. I was just thinking it was time to wean June from Lady. Lady, I'm sure can not wait to get back to work. Don't give up on Ken. At an auction in Indiana in October, only for draft horses. A percheron sold for $165,000.00. They are not horses for me, now that I've been around a lot of them and see their value. I am going to go for the smaller horses. Draft Horse are great for men and extremely strong women though.

@donelookin3386Ай бұрын
Remember that horses can only think with one side of their brain at a time. This means you have to train both sides of the horse. They can be scared of an object on the left but turn them around and they dont see it the same with the right. This also means when you reward a horse you need to reward both sides of the horse, pet both sides. They dont transfer from right brain to left brain and back and forth, its like two separate brains.

I have a question about your reins. I've noticed a few times now that your reins on the rear of the horses seems to be uncontrolled(for a lack of a better term). It seems like you're constantly having to toss them back up on their backs. Do they make or could you fabricate a large eye that could go on the part of the harness that loops under the tail? Just curious. Love what you guys do thank you!
