Great video. My request for next FPS ranking is Blood! The chase seen you see on the TV in level 2, is actually from a real live news broadcast. it's OJ Simpsons trying to escape in his Bronco. Also in Tier Drops you mentioned you don't know how it works, dropping down the pipe? They use the same trick in the first episode where you drop down the vent. Halfway through the drop it teleports you to a different part of the map. So there isn't actually 2 areas on top of each other, they are actually quite far apart. Press tab to watch your map as you drop down.

Lunatic fringe does not teleport you anywhere. In the Build engine you can use the room over room trick in a way, that a full circle is actually 720 degrees instead of 360, you just need to carefully place the sector walls just to just a bit different coordinate. This way you can make even spiral staircases, but if you don't change the height of the sectors, you get impossible spaces. Comparing the underground train with Blood's train is not fair. The underground trains are moving. In the train level of Blood the environment textures move, the train is build as any other levels. Area 51 button combination: 4 buttons = 16 combinations, not that hard. If the 8 buttons are working together, then 256 combinations. A bit more tedious, but bearable. Yes, I played this level a long time ago to remember the combination :D

The N64 version of the game made a lot of changes, some good and some bad, but one of the better ones was the Stadium level is actually finished out to look like a stadium, complete with tiered seating and an outer perimeter with concession stands, bathrooms etc. The Cycloid Emperor boss was also replaced on this version with a full 3D polygon version on himself that is ten times bigger and more intimidating looking but no less hard to beat, and kind of jars against the sprites used for all the other enemies. Curiously, while the Atomic Edition episode itself is not included, a few specific maps like Duke Burger, Area 52 and the Supermarket are ported faithfully as secret levels, and the Alien Enforcer enemy from the fourth episode is liberally parachuted into Lunar Apocalypse maps where it does kind of fit.

Something Lunar Reactor really suffers from is that its high miniboss quantity and limited supplies, especially pickups for weapons themselves (instead of just ammo). This might not matter in episode play, but it makes it very much a slog in single level runs. Edit: Doing more pistol only runs of your higher ranked levels, I think the shrink ray may be like the jetpack: It only trivializes levels it isn't found it. Those with it aren't based on fighting lots of otherwise tough enemies vulnerable to it (or are only found after them, like Rabid Transit), while those with it (at least in the open) lack such enemies in quantity.

Excellent video, been looking for FPS level reviews for a while. This look is exhaustive enough to give a good idea of each level, but doesn't bog down on minutiae. Very good balance and engaging style. Certainly will be waiting for more of these. Feedback: Instead of straight ranking, for me scoring 1 - 5 or A - F would be easier to get a grip whether each level would be considered "good" or "bad". That would give a better idea how each game compares to FPS genre levels in general. Would it be practical to make a final ranking best to worst or vice versa, where you could see the final list in one place? In the style of credits roll for example? Since you asked: here's my take on your rankings. Agree: Later part of Lunar Apocalypse has the best levels of the game; Occupied Territory, Lunar Reactor and Dark Side. As you mentioned, the feel isn't very "Duke" in those levels, but they stand on their own. EP2 is like a trippy filling in a sandwich of "regular Duke" of EP1 and EP3. Disagree: Spin Cycle. It's my favorite level because of its supreme gimmickiness and is just plain fun to play on a whole different level. As a "proper" FPS level it must feel overtly silly, but I like that. Same goes for Lunatic Fringe and Tier Drops. They feel nothing like a real place, and that otherworldly atmosphere makes them appealing to me. Abyss, while tedious as a level, is very atmospheric as well and a good sendoff to EP2's weirdness. Maybe reviewing Half-Life 1 chapters next? They should be distinguishable enough to make them rankable.

Glad to hear I'm filling a gap in the FPS KZbin scene - there are so few left! The ranking format (i.e. 1-5 or A-F vs order within the game itself) has been one of my biggest uncertainties in how to present my thoughts in my videos. My biggest reason for not including basic ratings out of 5 was to try and steer clear of comparing levels from different games against each other. I know I'll eventually hit some kind of inconsistency in my scoring from game to game and this feels like a way of avoiding that. Plus, I know I'm guilty of focusing in on review scores and the like when I consume content, and I know that without them I focus far more on what is actually being said. I'm hoping this means the comments focus more on what we each like and don't like, rather than a number or grading. Having said that, if enough people feel strongly about it, I'll always consider changing my approach. Love your "trippy sandwich" description of EP2. I think the game would be worse off without a palette cleanser between EP1 and EP3. As for what's next, Half-Life 1 is a game I'll probably steer clear of for a while. I've never had the adoration for it that so many do, and I don't think I'd be doing the game justice nor would I be creating a fun video to watch. It's a great game and raised the bar for FPS games but it's just never clicked with me. It would mean far fewer levels/chapters, but for now I'll focus on games I truly enjoy.

Hey, there you go, for the most part i share that sentiment about the levels and didn't really bother building a wall of text about it, so you just saved me and rottguy some time. To me, spin cycle was absolutely wonderfully fun and cool so i reacted like someone had just thrown an undeserved punch that i had to dodge when i saw it getting plopped at the bottom of the list. I think we can all agree though that the 1st level was as good as it could possibly be for the time.

In Duke Burger level, before you shrink yourself and go into the room full of enemies, there is a way to kill those enemies from a vent above the room, without having to go through shrinking. However, if you go that way you will not be able to do anything else yet as rest of things in that room get triggered by your actions.

As underdeveloped as the tram in Rabid Transit was, I *did* find it to be very memorable. I was in jr. high when I got the game, and my gamer friend and I thought it was neat as hell, and it felt very novel at the time. This was before Half Life's iconic train sequence. Anyway, great video, thanks.
@rgerber Жыл бұрын
I don't remember much from the 64 version, expect the different weapons and all levels having blue sky /daylight. The Level Rabit Transit was like a completely different level almost. Way more complex train-systems if i remember correctly.
@Bleusilences Жыл бұрын
Aside for rapid transit that I would rank much higher and incubator that I would rank much lower, it's a pretty fair ranking of the level in the game.

Fan-made map packs would be fun but there are so many official releases ahead of them in the queue. Death Wish for Blood would be first if I run out of official release ideas.

Damn, Taradino Cassatt guy has wildly different opinions than me on duke3d map rankings! Still, it's good to see ole duke3d still getting some screen time smack dab in the middle of 2023. Gonna check any other videos ya got, hopefully you got some on rise of the triad (ROTT), 'cause this modernized wolf3d clone needs some more lovin', despite having some of the most boring maps i ever begrudingly waddled through! Edit: nah you ain't got any, might wanna do a rott map rating if you're feeling particularly masochistic, i'll be certainly entertained, especially if you let that wonderful rott midi music blast with a good soundfont.
@rottguyYT Жыл бұрын
ROTT feels like a video I have to make at some point but by the time the remaster comes out there'll be so many levels to cover. It's going to be a mammoth task. The Shareware levels and new episode in the remaster will take the tally beyond this video which took me ages as it is. At least Duke 3D had interesting and memorable levels to cover - ROTT's second half (if I ever muster the strength to review each level) not so much. Luckily the soundtrack is a work of art.
@GashimahironChl Жыл бұрын
@@rottguyYT Wasn't kidding when i said it's a masochistic task, no one in their right mind will bother to play the lame old rott levels, and even the newer rott levels are kinda wack, leaving only andrew hulshult's fantastic music and the cool old guns to carry the burden.

In Area 52 level, the end codes are actually shown on a machine earlier in the level.

This FPS have by far the most interesting and fun levels design of any shooters that I’ve played. My favorites ones are from Levelord and Allen Blum, a lot of verticality in most of their levels. It’s hard to disagree with Hollywood Holocaust being #1, this is peak DN3D level design and probably the best 1st level of any game of this genre. And hard to disagree for spin cycle, being one of the worst idea ever made, it was obviously the last one. Even if some peoples like to take jab a Randy, I think he did more than a good job as a level designer in this game. Too bad that the shrinker completely f-up all the balance of the game, they should have ammo starve the player just like the magnum in older Resident Evil game, not more than a couple dozen munitions for a whole episode. Personally I think this game and Quake 1 are the peak of 90’s shooters. Outstanding musics, level design, enemies encounter, gameplay and atmosphere in both of those games. Quake might have better enemies and gameplay but DN3D have ridiculously good level design. Duke It Out in D.C. and Caribbean Life’s a Beach have some solid level design, I presume you’ve probably already try those if you like Duke Nukem. Nuclear Winter is the best pack if you want to play garbage Duke. Pro tips: - You can take steroids while you are small, it will make you grow in size instantly, useful for the 3-4 obligatory shrinker section and the alien that can shrink you. - Like someone said, you can use a jet pack to don’t trigger the alarm, but you can simply stay on the computer, since it’s the floor that trigger the alarm. As a big fan of this game, it was really fun to watch you talk about all those 40 levels. I highly agree with Dark Side and some other, I might disagree with some of your ranking, like L.A. Rumble, but I am certainly not here to tell you what you should like and shouldn’t like. That doesn’t change the fact that this whole video was highly interesting to watch and hearing your opinion. I’ll have to watch the RTCW ranking, another great FPS.

I've actually never played the expansion packs for Duke 3D. Heard mixed reviews except for Life's a Beach which I find hard to look past the aesthetic. Some day I'll have to try them. Great tip on the steroids - it seem so obvious now that you mention it!
@AresKusa Жыл бұрын
My two cents on the expansions: 'Duke it out in DC' - has some high highs, and some VERY low lows. They did succeed very well at making very realistic depictions of real-life locations for the time, even when compared to other Duke3D levels, but in most cases the actual player experience of the level suffers pretty badly - they were certainly a bit too ambitious with some of these stages but its still worth a play if you love the game and can't get enough. 'Duke Caribbean Life's A Beach' - This one is pretty damn good. Solid level designs and some really funny gimmicks. Not much to say, it's just solid. 'Nuclear Winter' - Trash. Actually so bad, it has only seven stages - two of them are 'winter' reduxes of the first two levels of episode 1, and one is a boss stage. So that leaves us with only four real stages and they all suck. Loaded with repetitive scenery, cheap ambushes, bad design, and lame new enemies. Hard pass on this one.

I was mostly on board until you got to episode 4, which I thought was garbage. Confusing level layouts, no ammo or health, just a bunch of themed levels of style over substance. They'd have all been in the 30s rank for me.

I feel sad for E2M9 from the original Doom. I remember it terrified me as a child, but got able to understand the narrative hints after a while (years) that it was about making the monsters fight each other. Two rooms that tell a story and introduce an unusual combat strategy at the time. Light years better than a circular room that causes motion sickness. (Okay, the three-key room paranauê at the end was unnecessary, Sandy Petersen) Anyway. Great video! I think my list would have been similar, because I also really like Lunar Apocalypse. It gives Duke Nukem a The Thing-like atmosphere (and soundtrack. God, the soundtrack). It's kind of claustrophobic and depressing, while at the same time the atmosphere doesn't lose its comical side. If Duke Nukem Forever had done something in that nonsense style, that actually carries a weight, instead of giving the protagonist more anabolics, I think the franchise could have been much more interesting.

I think a bit part of the reason why the bosses are such push overs is that the game used to be played with tank controls and no mouse aim. That's how my father and I played it back in the day anyway. Take away your strafe and mouse aim, and the game instantly becomes far more difficult. Bosses especially!

The drones can die in a ditch - I always despised them for what a pain to deal with they are. Only good thing about them is exploiting their stupidity by having them explode as you hide behind a closed door. Not a very Duke-like tactic but you gotta ease the pain where you can.
