A lot of people have said Bret was hard to work with. Not as a technician, but in the back, going over matches. His ego seemed to get in the way a lot.
@JayTheAdviceGuy
@JayTheAdviceGuy 6 жыл бұрын
@R.A.J, Kevin Nash has said it, for one. Bret made a big stink about taking Nash's finish in their cage match in '96 -- AND REFUSED -- because he felt it would make him look weak, even though he (Bret) was still going over. So that's one example. King Kong Bundy said he suggested something for one of their matches and Bret vetoed that right away. Montreal was obviously another example (though that one is kind of understandable). Scott Hall said Bret seemed to care more about winning than the money. And in my opinion, if you care more about YOU winning than anything else, it can hurt the business aspect of the, well, business. Hall also said Bret's house was like a shrine to his wrestling career and Hitman character. Which speaks to his ego. And if you read Bret's book, even THAT is nothing but a big pat on the back to himself & talking about how great he is. Not to mention, confronting Road Dogg about his opinion that Shawn Michaels was a better wrestler than him. (Really?) More ego stuff. Bret was easy to work with IN THE RING. He didn't injure people, and he wasn't sloppy. He was great in that regard. But behind the scenes, he was such a mark for himself, that it caused some people (who he worked with) to kind of roll their eyes.

JayTheAdviceGuy So that amounts to Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and King Kong Bundy...I can add Jacques Rougeau to that list and Bad News Allen as well Of course of that one incident, Kevin Nash says that he loves Bret and considers his matches with him probably his all time favorites so you might say that Nash is actually an advocate for Bret...if you've seen that Cage match and that portion of Bret's career, you can see why Bret was hesitant to look weak and as an afterthought in 2 straight matches so Bret has a point as well Scott Hall can bitch about Bret, but if you've seen the Rumble match that Hall is complaining about Bret being selfish, you see no evidence of it, Bret is actually being very generous to Hall on offense even though Hall was injured and Bret could've just elected to dominate the match...their KOTR match is also another good example of how generous Bret was in the ring Bundy as you can tell after looking at his interviews resents guys smaller than him who got pushed ahead of him, he bitched about Michaels as well, so I think he's just bitter...also a wrestler just vetoing an idea doesn't mean they're difficult Jacques Rougeau is a well know complainer and kind of a primadonna about how he viewed himself and the importance of his Montreal territory...his own tag partner Carl Oulet and his brother Raymond say that about him, and aside from that despite Jacques' complaining, Bret actually did put him over for the IC belt and Jacques actually says Bret's a good guy Bad News, idk, Allen seems like a legit dude, but he also tends to complain a lot especially about perceptions of racism, which maybe was there but idk, he complains about all the Hart kids except for Stu, DK, and Davey, but on the other hand Bret actually got him a job in the WWF and they worked fine there according to Allen How about the guys who say Bret's a pro? Austin, Foley, Undertaker, Sting, Hennig, Savio, Bam Bam, Nash, Smash and Axe, Hawk and Animal, Neidhart, Jannetty, Booker T, Benoit, Piper, Brunzell and Blair, the list goes on Before drawing up definite conclusions about whether Bret was a pro or not, it'd probably be appropriate to weigh both sides and their motives beforehand, not to say Bret was ego less, but difficult because he was a mark? I don't think so, it doesn't make sense looking at his output or the overwhelming testimony...what part of Bret's matches reflect that he had to dominate and protect himself at all costs, the # of losses he has? The way he sold like he was being destroyed? The way he didn't hog offense or throw in spots to highlight himself?
@JayTheAdviceGuy

@R.A.J, I didn't draw up a conclusion tho. I said a lot of people have said things. You asked me who, so I answered. I'm not here to debate the source, just the fact that they said it, because that's what you asked. I never said Bret didn't have countless supporters on the other side tho.

JayTheAdviceGuy I know you didn't, I was just thinking about this thing about Bret's ego being this major hindrance that his critics like to bring up as being a special problem with him, I'm just saying that based on overwhelming testimony, Bret definitely has an ego and a tremendous belief in himself to put it mildly, but I think his critics try to exaggerate that aspect and downplay all of his positives so that they can say "See Bret was just as bad as the kliq and Hogan and all the other guys that get criticized" I don't see how he is though, there are people that dislike him and there are guys that were jealous I'm sure but most of what I've heard and can be seen is that Bret was a team player who, yes, did have an instinct for self preservation at times but not to the extent of the well known antagonists from that time period like I mentioned above

Fast forward 18 months later where the main event was Bret Hart vs Papa Shango and the crowd was less than 1,000. My middle school football and basketball games drew more than Bret Hart as champion. Idk, I have a hard time listening to Sid vent about Bret Hart. They had 4 televised matches. Hart outright did the favor for Sid on three occasions. Lost to him via Powerbomb on Monday Night Raw. Lost to him via Powerbomb at a PPV and then lost to him in a steel cage match (may I add the ONLY steel cage match Hart lost during his WWE tenure.) Then at WM13 he was Powerbombed again by Sid, looking totally defenseless in the process. His only televised win over Sid was in a lumberjack match with a school boy roll up. Sid never did Hart any favors. At least not on television. Bret not only took 3 losses to him, he went out of his way to put Sid over and make him look like an unstoppable God in the process. So Sid bitch about Bret Hart? No, Sid, I love you, think you were a great worker, and in many respects severely underrated but.....shut the fuck up.

Bret had "reasonable creative control". Dropping the belt to Austin at the next event wasn't reasonable, because that would destroy WWF's plans for Austin winning the belt at Wrestlemania. Bret The Hit man Hart was my second favorite wrestler of all time during the 80s and 90s. He might have been difficult like many wrestlers claim but his matches were always top notch on his end while in the WWF. He 100 percent drew money and was an excellent story teller. The 90s in the WWF were trying to recover from the steroid scandal and Hulk Hogan leaving after lying under oath about steroid use among wrestlers and himself. His matches with Mr Perfect were legendary and he could work with anyone back in those days. He took the business seriously, like an art form. He grew up in the business with his legendary dad Stu Hart. I'm sure other wrestlers were difficult To work with as well who claim otherwise. Shawn Michaels screwed over other wrestlers all the time as many can attest to that with Triple HHH, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and X-Pac.

Unlike that idiot Hogan after whose switch, company went into an vicious downward trend, Bret's exit by developing next torch bearers made sure that WWF could further propel further.. If that never happens, Bret never goes past the mid-card in the WWF. Facts. In fact, he was always planned to be a short-term, temporary top guy until the steroid trial blew over. This is why he was already looking to replace Bret with Luger by the summer of 1993. When Luger didnt pan out, he immediately started looking for someone else. And tried Diesel. The bottom line is that Vince NEVER envisioned having Bret in that top spot for even 4 years, and was always looking past him, trying to find someone else. Ultimately he settled on Shawn, because of the influence the Kliq had acquired. Shawn himself was a special case, and not someone Vince would have typically went with. The problem with drawing power is, the undercard matters too. Having guys dress up as an evil dentist, pig farmers and other things trying to appeal to 8 year olds means ticket sales will suffer. Prime hulk hogan would not have drawn as much with those underarms either. Business had been plummeting downhill since wrestlemania 6 when they went 10% realism and 90% cartoon moving forward. Bret was one of the only watchable things on the roster back then. Early successes like wrestlemania 3 had gimmicks, but less childish gimmicks on the undercard. Realism took back over when Austin started to climb.

Easy to make everything black and white. The company made you champ and you're leaving for double the money, do business and put someone else over. In theory that's easy and reasonable. What Sid doesn't take in account is Shawn totally disrespected Bret in front of all of the boys saying no matter what he would never put Bret over. Can you blame Bret for not wanting to put over Shawn in Montreal where is the only country in Canada where he's respected anymore bc of how they turned him heel. There's a thing called perspective. I wish Bret would've stayed and things would've worked out but Bret is a man of principle and wouldn't put over a twat like Shawn. He would've put anyone besides Shawn over. I have an odd opinion on the screw job, both were right in their own ways. Vince couldn't honor a contract he had with Bret, so Bret would clearly be pissed and should be, also not wanting to lose to a guy he legit hates in his home country. Vince also has business to run. He was in a war with WCW and he didn;t want Hart leaving with the belt like Blaze did and also having the title vacant looks bad from a story perspective and gives WCW a rub you don't want to give.

Regardless of problems Sid had working with Bret or others, I thought he had a decent little title run back there, Nov. '96 to Jan. '97, working with Bret and Shawn. The Survivor Series match in which he won the belt from Shawn was good, they did spots that made him look smart and agile, same as in the successful title defense against Bret at In Your House:It's Time, in Dec.. I hated the finish of the match with Shawn though, it made the whole thing about Shawn being too upset about Jose Lothario's health to care about wrestling anymore. All the same, I think it was a good moment for Sid, he was smiling after the match and getting hugged by some of the fans, like it was a babyface win. I thought his win over Bret at It's Time was better, even though both Steve Austin and Shawn (inadvertedly) helped him win. Bret was half playing heel in the match, attacking Sid from behind while he took the belt off and later trying to grab Shawn's commentary chair to use against Sid. That was actually what led to Shawn's interference, Sid pie-faced Shawn for allowing Bret to take his chair, Shawn got up on the apron and collided with Bret, setting him up for the powerbomb. Again, it made the finish seem about Bret and Shawn, but I thought overall it was a strong moment for Sid.

Yes those guys back then were under the impression that all you needed was to be big and do lots of steroids to get over. Brett showed how much technique mattered and I think the fans responded positively to that

The problem came in of what happened to the women's title with Alundra Blaze showing up on WCW tv and dropping the title in a trash can. Bret had agreed previously to show up on Raw the night after to say good bye to the fans and vacate the title. Vince was worried Bret would go back on their agreement and do what Alundra had done, that is why he did what he did to Bret.

Bret turned down a very lucrative contract from WCW in mid 96 and stayed with WWF instead for less money. Anyone else in Bret’s position would have immediately gone to WCW. Bret was loyal to WWF, Vince backstabbed him, period. Besides, Bret still could have dropped the belt after SS to anyone.

Bret and Nash drew similarly. Bret hart was as bad a as a champion as Nash. The business was bad when Diesel won the belt. If Bret was half the draw you think, Vince would have kicked Undertaker and Shawn and payed Bret. Undertaker couldn't use the Undertaker character in WCW. But Because Bret was a poor champion he chose Shawn and Undertaker over Bret.

Can't speak to backstage stuff and his personality. But even being a big fan of Bretts, I do acknowledge that the sales were usually down when he was up. But there's no accounting for taste. Anyone being objective would say he is far superior in ring than a guy like Hogan, but Hogan sells tickets and Brett doesn't. Now when I think of Hart versus Hogan as wrestlers, I think of Hogan as N'Sync or Britney spears. Talented to a degree, certainly but huge ticket sales and popularity. Brett is sort of like Tom Waits. Supremely talented at his chosen craft, and certainly gets recognition and has a loyal if smaller group of fans. Hogan may have sold more tickets, but Hart gave the fans better matches.

Hbk disrespected him hard as fuck in the locker room. Imo Shawn is the arrogant one. And i wouldve done and felt the same exact way Bret felt during that entire fiasco from start to finish. Vince probably wouldve caught a couple punches while he was pickin his broken ass up off the ground as well cuz he did his top wrestler so fuckin dirty. Bret was never gonna take the belt to wcw and trash it. He told vince he would publicly vacate the title that Monday night after the ppv.

Sid is not wrong, the WWE used to give away tickets for free when Bret was on top... You guys should see some of the house show attendances he did in Europe and Canada, even Japan its quite embarrassing... The man failed to sell out a single show... The WWF lost 4.43 million dollars when he was on top throughout 94 to mid 95

There's a problem with what Sid is saying. Yes, business wasn't doing good when Bret was the champion, but neither was the year when Shawn Michaels was the champion. Between 1994 to 1995, the WWF lost $4.4 million dollars, although the company managed to bounce back between 1995 to 1996 with a profit of $3.3 million. However, 1996 to 1997 would see the company lose $6.5 million. Let's be real, 1994 to 1996 was not a good time for the wrestling world. It didn't matter who was on top, especially when WCW started to win against the WWF in the ratings war.

Bret just wanted his matches to be on another level. Also Bret became the champion when the WWF suspended everyone for steroids and the product was already going downhill,by the time his reign ended Bret had helped the WWF become successful and profitable again. You can’t blame Bret for the steroid era and business being bad,that’s just ridiculous on Sid’s part. Also I can’t believe Bret being lost in any type of match,Sid is a very cool guy but come on,that’s just another ridiculous statement by a dude who would rather play softball.

Bret Hart was low card tag guy. They made him the champion because of the steroid scandal since WWF was a babyface territory. Once Bret Hart went on top he made Brisco and Patterson convince Vince to put the belt on Bret. Bret Hart screwed Luger and Diesel out of world title picture. He tried doing the same with Shawn and nobody supported because even they were fanboys of Shawn Michaels. WWF putting the belt on these jobber type wrestlers like Bret and Shawn pretty much killed WWF. WWF wasn't making any money with Bret, they were only loosing money on top. By 97 Vince was fed up with Bret Hart being as a champion and he couldn't remove Patterson and Brisco so he refused to sign Bret. Again Bret Hart played politics to not job the belt to Shawn because of their issues. Bret Hart talked with Earl ebner, Patterson and Brisco before survivor series because Bret wasn't listening to Vince. Bret refused to drop the belt at the PPV. It's not like Bret Hart was a huge draw. Yet he threw tantrums and victimized himself. No doubt Shawn was no different than Bret and also halted Vaders push. And was not a big fan of Austin being the champion. Sid was right Bret was piece of crap.

Sid is full of crap. Did you know that during the mid 2000's he pitched to Vince that he should come back, go on a winning streak, win the world title and then drop it to someone a year later to make the next big superstar. And he's here talking about Bret being arrogant. Sid is one of the most delusional wrestlers of all time. He even tried to murder Arn Anderson. He has the IQ of a mouldy potato
