I've owned my Rebel 300 since 2017 ~5000mi on the odo, and have done several multi-day riding all day road trips around the pacific northwest on it. Multiple stints of 70-80mph cruising for hours on end. Of course it doesn't have heaps of power, but it is capable of doing it, and comfortably.

@@js7660 if you're a heavy set guy I'd recommend a 750 or even bigger especially if you're going to be doing any 2 up riding. I have a 2005 Honda shadow spirit 750. It's got heaps of power but it's very tame considering the size of engine. Its never felt overpowered and dangerous just felt like good power throughout the rpm band. I like the old spirits because they're chain driven. Sure it takes more time to maintain but the driving characteristics are what makes motorcycles fun.

As a non-rider who is looking at getting their first bike, watching this makes me want a Honda Rebel 500. Seems like the 300 is best for suburbs and inner city while the 500 with just a little more power would be better for slightly longer rides or interstate travel.
@Not_that_kind_of_Dr5 жыл бұрын
Just from my own experience and watching many beginners, 300 cc is a great beginner size, but so is 500 cc and you will want to sell the 300cc much faster. You'll naturally want a more powerful bike as your skills increase (just because power makes riding easier, if nothing else). 300 cc will be nice for about two months (long enough to get your permit). The 500 cc will be a great beginner bike for much longer. Also, if you don't happen to be a 160 lb weakling like me, you'll NEED the power of the 500.

It's annoying to be placed in the "beginner" category. I am a tiny woman and there are not many choices for my body size. I rode for over 25 years, many of those years as a daily rider, I am definitely not a beginner. Though the many bikes I've owned were between 650-900cc, I'm now medically retired with a very bad lumbar fusion (not moto related) which has taken away the strength I need for heavier bikes and all-day/week-long rides. I now live near a drivable/ridable beach and the TW200 is hella fun. A smaller engine on a small frame is still a good time.
@DukeOfDC6 жыл бұрын
The TW200 is the bike that I took my motorcycle license class on and it was so much fun. Plenty of pep in that "little" bike. I'm sorry to hear about your injuries playing a role in what you can ride, but I'm glad to see you're still getting out there and riding. I would also suggest looking into many road legal dirt bikes and having them lowered professionally (if needed) and supermoto'd. There are some amazing seat options out there that make what were insanely stiff bikes a lot more comfortable to ride.
@hephaestus5115 жыл бұрын
Have you seen the GROM?
@TheAnnoyingBoss2 жыл бұрын
@@hephaestus511 yeah it's nice but imo they should try to cram the 300 engine in it so I can take the Grom on a real road trip. The from is slow enough it can't get up the hills on my way into town at the speed limit so for the 4k price I have to pass. This is about the next thing up that'll get me where I need to go locally. I had cheaper bikes with bigger engines by far but I'm looking for something new that doesn't brake the bank and also gets superior fuel economy and affordability to keep running. Max speed around me is about 60-65 but their is a few areas where I can go 80 and this bike is right on that line where it's good enough to be like a Grom but functional enough I can actually take it on the interstate all day if I wanted. Wouldnt be ideal. I want to do a lot of traveling so fuel economy and cheap tires are a must. One thing I wish, the 300 was a 350 and belt drive so I wouldn't have to be a chain cleaner

I've owned the 2017 300 since late april. Here are the pros ,cons, and undecided of it Pros: 1. 6 gears and the specs HAVE NOT..changed what so ever. from the 2017 to 2018 year model 2. 80+ mpg if you ride her easily enough IF keeping the max speed around 50 mph at all times in 6th gear, keep rear tire at 38 psi and front at 36psi, and total weight is under 225 and you're not climbing mountain hills with it and refill somewhere near the 1.5 gallons consumed- mark of the tank ( for me that's once weekly so it works out perfectly) 3. Fat and high profile tires make this a reasonably comfy ride. Undecided: The exact point in which the bike response via engine revving/beginning of turning the throttle should be adjusted depending on your riding skill. Beginners may need to leave it as stock. It takes turning it about 12 to 18% of the throttle's ( clock percentage..if that makes any sense) for it to finally....engage in revving the engine. Other bikes, even beginner ones, only require turning the throttle around 7 to 10% of the total turning allowed amount. Cons: 1. If you have a leg inseam measure of bigger than 27/28" ..You will probably feel cramped on this bike. Mine is 32" and I definitely feel cramped after riding just 15 to 20 minutes. So I stretch a little at redlights and I"m fine. It's not a really big deal breaker for me personally, but If you're anal about reasonable comfort and you're the same size as me, look for a different bike like the nc750x for example. 2. It is BUZZY as hell beyond 50mph and doesn't really ( blend away or go away) until 60mph even, yes that is in 6th gear/highest gear. This bike DOES NOT like doing faster than 50mph on a longriding basis...especially given the mpg difference you suffer beyond 50mph across at least 1.5 gallons worth of fuel consumption ( that's only traveling the exact same path to and from home daily for 6 days straight and filling up the same time...once weekly at the same gas station and keeping 40 psi in the rear tire and 37 psi in the front btw with the same weight on the bike 90% of the time) 3. When trying to do very tight slow speed turns ( as in trying to turn WITHIN your lane to do a u turn for example). the 130mm front tire makes this alittle more difficult to do than most other bikes that have a 110 or 120 to me, but maybe I'm over thinking this as I haven't tried Fast Eddie's instructions on doing slow speed turns yet. This next con is honestly relative more than the others considering not everyone mounts a camera on his or her rear fender to literally watch his or her ass. I do because dumbass mississhitty white trash rednecks and dumbass black thug monkeys ...CAN'T or REFUSE to drive like they have an ounce of sense or decency. 4. No matter where on the rear fender I mount my go pro camera using a ram mount system, it still shakes like crazy ( perhaps there is something I'm missing beyond the further you mount it towards the edge/rear of the bike...the shakier it becomes) Overall- need a good begginner bike , your leg inseam is 28" or shorter, and you want highway capable with great mpg. The rebel 300 is solid. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

5 foot 9 with a 32 inch inseam ( and I ride with boots on which adds at least one extra inch). If you're considering the rebel 300 or 500 and you're my size or taller/longer, I don't recommend the rebel because you will be cramped. If your inseam is 20 to 27 inches, you should be pretty good although you may want to adjust the handle bars towards you some depending on your arm length. Cheers.

never understood why they wouldn't want to drop in a tach and gear indicator. I can't see it being that much more expensive...i mean, it already has a digital dash. Yeah, you don't NEED a tach and gear indicator, but for something that is aimed clearly at a beginner, those two things can be very handy.
@chuckbowen43346 жыл бұрын
You can install a gear indicator. ...about 40.00 on ebay. Get the one that plugs into the engine harness. A tach can be installed for about the same. Honda built this bike to a price point.
@DukeOfDC6 жыл бұрын
Agreed on the price point. Most people think they can add a lot of things and keep the price point low.
@ArifKhan.6 жыл бұрын
I get the price point thing. But I am not talking about adding a slipper clutch, quick shifter and 30 more horses. a gear indicator and tach. If those things cost retail $40 to $80 buck after market, Honda can certainly add them up front for a lot cheaper....especially since a digital dash is already there; I'd like to think that it's a simple tweak. Yamaha does it, KTM does it, BMW (G310r) does it. Besides, someone willing to pay $4000 for a bike won't baulk at paying $4040. That delta in price is not going to be a deal breaker.
@sterlingroberts62406 жыл бұрын
Arif Khan This is a cruiser. The cruiser riding style is more about feel than performance, and just enjoying the ride. Couple that with the fact that most cruiser engines are tuned for everyday ride-ability(robust mid-range power, decent low-end, and weak top-end), a tachometer can often be a distraction on a cruiser, especially for a beginner. Like he said in the review, you will know when you need/want to shift on this bike, either from excessive vibration, or lack of torque(power) at high rpm. That’s just the mentality of many cruiser riders. I’m a sport rider, and as such, I’m bothered by riding a bike without a tach, but I can understand who this bike was built for. I hope you all can as well. Full disclosure: I own a 2006 Honda Rebel 250, and a 2017 Ninja 300.
@ArifKhan.6 жыл бұрын
@@sterlingroberts6240 I can respect that argument. Valid points. However, I'll counter with: Honda has been going the digital tach route. So put in an option to disable the tach. It's just a line of code in software. :)

The Rebel 300 ticks a few boxes for me; size/weight being a big one - as I don't want to find myself griped with paranoia every time I stop... dropping a bike would have me die inside a lil. The under 300cc sounds like a good place to be as I doubt I'd need much more than that for my size just to go for a tour... +fuel cost. It also doesn't look like its packed with piles of 'extra' tech (hopefully); personally I prefer learning on something that isn't silky smooth. I want to feel the road/ the physics, in all its brain-rattling glory... So I might actually enjoy the handlebar vibrations. Thanx for the review, this helps :D

On the other hand, if someone doesn't ride Bikes on Interstates (like me, very remote) and use the bike for cruising on Hwy and other roads, a certain 70 is plenty. For many people, not really depending on shoe sizes, is a light motorcycle the way to go.

New 300s are selling for $3800 here. I plan to buy in late Feb, so it will probably be even cheaper. At that price, why buy used? Used bikes around here are way more expensive than that, and used 300s are impossible to find. They say learn to ride on a used bike. Why? The 300 is cheap and is a great bike to learn on. Go for it.

Hi I am about to take my motorcycle classes at the end of this month and will be buying bike as soon as I finish the class. I wanted a sport bike but everyone says that I should get something simple for my first bike. I was thinking of the Rebel because of the low power, light weight, and lost price for a brand new bike, plus I wanted something comfortable as a daily rider like a cruiser. After watching your video review I am having doubts about the Rebel so do you have a recommendation for a bike I should buy?

why do people keep marketing these as beginner bikes... yes they are easy to ride but lacks vital information for new riders 1) there is no gear indicator this not not a problem for vet riders but for newer riders this is a distraction and can result in stalls and missed gears. 2) there is no tac again for vets this is no prob you are seasoned to listen to the bike and familiar with the sounds to know when to shift. THIS BIKE IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS! ITS JUST A CHEAP EASY TO RIDE BIKE.
@DukeOfDC5 жыл бұрын
Isn't a cheap easy to ride bike something you would classify as good for beginners?
@Seymour_Cox5 жыл бұрын
So before the invention of gear indicators what did beginner bikers use to do? What about cars with manual transmission? As a beginner, the presence of a gear indicator would be on the bottom of must-have list. I would argue that good brakes, abs, forgiving suspension would be a more adequate indication of a good beginner bike, not to mention costs.
@wolfmannn20085 жыл бұрын
People learn to shift by noise in cars or video games. And you can memorize the gear you are on, using the magnificent power of the brain. Also you can know what gear you are on if you remember the speed for each gear. Another way is just guessing by the speed you are traveling.
@NatesEscape5 жыл бұрын
It's not hard to figure out what gear you're in... I learned without a gear indicator... If you need to find first just keep clicking down till it won't click anymore it's simple? I don't get why everyone moans about not having a gear indicator when you ride to the revs anyway

I'd argue that a gear indicator is more of a distraction

so dude - same as the 250 rebels, and every manual civic ever made, it does not need a tachometer. If you manage to blow one of Honda's small engines, you were REALLY trying. like shifting to first @60 mph. Ive had a 90 civic 3dr 4spd that, at 70mph, I could downshift to 3rd to pass on the highway. my first bike was a Rebel 250, pieced together out of a junked '86 and a wrecked '01. with the stock sprockets on the 250, I couldve dusted you from 0-60. you have to wind out the gears more. Trust me - it can take it. And I'm sure the 300 is even more capable, because its a thumper. Oh, and due to all this, they do vibrate like hell. I figured that out real fast piecing those 250s together - a good amount of heft, or a torque wrench, is a superb idea for just about every nut and bolt. I became a HUGE fan of zipties during that year. I know that bike is in the 'break-in" stage, but please - don't sell Honda short. (speaking of short, I did have to weld on new front controls - @ 5'11, 200lbs, and with a bare springer seat, my knees were always slightly above my hips. that also makes it uncomfortable to keep your knees in. with the brackets I tacked on, it felt like western-style horse-riding. and though my heels were pretty close to the ground like that, leaning the 250 beyond 45 degrees in fast curves, I never scraped. I scrape the pegs on my Street 500 every damn turn almost)

It depends on what you want. For a beginner the low seat height is a plus. The power is reasonable but, a bit buzzy at highway speed. Price on these is 4500.00 . So it's good on several criteria. Warning.once you get used to it, you may want the 500cc version instead. The 500cc version is very nice indeed.

I sat in this exact model and color today. It felt very comfortable, but I HATE an all digital gauge. I need at the combo of an analog tach and digital speedo. Very important as well to have a gear indicator. VERY especially for a beginner such as myself. I haven't yet ridden a bike, and I know for certain already that a gear indicator is a must. I'm in love with the Kawasaki Vulcan S (650). Gorgeous cruiser, so comfortable, killer price range for a 650, 2017 & 2018 now have a gear indicator, and it has A LOT of customization capabilities. That may very well be my first bike, or perhaps the Honda CTX700N DCT. A DCT bike to me sounds EXTREMELY appealing so I could simp,y enjoy the ride and focus on the road and traffic, rather having some of my attention being taken by shifting. Definitely both better choices than this.

i like this bike and i want this bike because i enjoy traveling but i never liked the look of a touring bike because they were too bulky, plus they're like 500+ pounds and as you can imagine, thats pretty hard to carry around being a beginner. I've always liked the look of cruisers from the get-go and this bike is perfect, it's not too fast so it would be happy to go at interstate speeds plus it has the saddle bags which just look amazing on cruisers and lastly its even got ABS. So, I'm hoping that this will be my first bike.

Forgive my ignorance but I took my motorcycle safety class a few years ago but I haven't been able to buy my own bike yet. This may sound odd, but the only reason I like the 500 ore than the 300 is because the 300 has all those gaps & spaces where the engine is located. I'd prefer if they covered or cleaned that up. It feels like a rib-cage with missing organs.
@herrmahlzahn69245 жыл бұрын
I can see the value of that bike, but being identical to the 500 I really don't know what the 300 is for besides MSC testings. I believe people will grow out of the 300 very fast. But on the other hand, these bikes are around since 2017 and almost invisible on the used market. That could be a sign I am completely wrong.

It's cool little bike but the CB500 (which is really closer to a 450cc) is money better spent in my opinion. The 500cc is still a very light and easy to handle bike for beginners and it handles interstate travel much better. My wife learned on her CB500f in 2013 and is still loving it today.

This bike is supposed to be small. It is not supposed to be powerful. It was made for beginners. Don’t knock it. The manufacturer is targeting a group called beginners. Telling beginners to start on a more powerful and larger bike is not wise dude! Remember beginners, don’t ride outside your comfort zone. Upgrade over the years as you gain experience. Your first bike is not about power. It’s about learning the mechanics of the bike.
@herrmahlzahn69245 жыл бұрын
Well, you can't just plain say this. Now that are not beginner bikes at all. At least not in the view of the manufacturers. It's more like if the people can't afford a 650 then I sell them a 250. All around the world there are restrictions. Restrictions based on capabilities and also restrictions based on the in the last 10 years evolved political power games. In Europe where people ride around on 50cc mopets, a 150cc scooter is a adult motorcycle, there is a 300-500cc bike big, very big. Example In Europe you pay for a Honda CB 650R about 100 Dollar Tax and about 2500 Dollar insurance to keep that bike legal on the road. At the top of that you have politically correct motivated gas prices. You see there is some question about what are the costs to keep a bike legal, how much is the gas budget to calculate and out the window is for the most of the people 650cc motorcycles. Honda knows this, the reason why BMW build now a 310cc motorcycle and Suzuki V Storm 250 is the best seller there from Suzuki. I'll think that the rebel 500cc is the better beginner bike. But the cost is a factor too. Just saying.
@StratfordWingRider10 ай бұрын
It's a bit of a shame, as an owner of a CBR250R (which is the engine/bike before it was stroked to 286cc in CBR300R) - I don't think the Rebel 300 stood a chance, it's around 190kg wet where as the CBR is only 160kg wet and its not the quickest at that. I can see why people go for the 500 in the Rebel form.

The round speedo with the square display is the only bad thing about this bike. Thanks for the review. I would consider this more of a standard motorcycle with a bobber style. Also, I think comparing it to the Ninja 400 is absolutely unfair with this little bike.

Great review. But the only I would change it's a six speed transmission and you get ABS for around 300 dollars. Honda should add a gear indicator I do agree with you. To be honest the seat can be very uncomfortable after a hour or so and that does needs to be replace. and the front stocks are pretty bad.

I like the 300 as an entry bike. I think once you get to the 500, a bike like the Kawasaki Vulcan S may be a better value. The 300 is cheap, and I'm short (5'4"), so an entry bike for me. Once I get board of it... I'll go the bigger Vulvan route (with the 'short' configuration).
@magmafist6 жыл бұрын
Mario Svalina the major differences you get from a Rebel 500 instead of a Vulcan S 650 are: 1) mid control vs forward control 2) wide range of customizations on the Rebel (includes more comfortable seat) and you can even add crash bar + forward foot peg if you wish

Maybe do your homework before you do a review? It has a 6th gear. And just because a bike is small cc doesn't mean its beginners only. There is such a thing as downsizing to a smaller more manageable bike. I did this myself. Put my white knuckle days behind me, now it's all about having fun and taking in the sights. Short bursts on the freeway are ok on a bike this size. Just be aware you are not on a touring bike and go have fun! Because that's what motorcycling is all about.And in my opinion, this is a great bike for the $. It doesn't really scream "beginner", it's more of a valid bike than it's price tag would dictate.
