They kind of were. A big part of the show was that they had to stay in Hazzard as part of their parole. But I think they were more rebels against an unfair system. That's also the reason for the flag - rebellion. Yes, it has other contexts, but for them it was one way to show they were fighting the system. So ultimately, it could be seen as a political protest and they were just political prisoners.

The basis of the show was they ran moonshine. It was mostly unseen and unspoken. Look at the shows song. "Making their way the only way they knew how, but that's just a little bit more than the law would allow".

I'm from Alabama and I'm 63 years old, so I lived through the dukes of Hazzard timeline. As for it being not with the times of the south, that bullcrap. It was perfect timing. The show was fun, I was a teenager in that day, and although I may have gotten a few tickets, I never drove reckless and lawless. Most of the tickets I got was because the show made cops trigger happy. They would pull us over because we were young and may have been going 45 in a 35 mph speed sigh. Most of the signs were speed traps hidden behind trees, bushes, or billboards. But even today, it's fun momeries and fun watching.

Yes, it originally aired on a Friday night. Then changed to Monday nights. The last series was shown on Saturday afternoons. But by then hardly anyone was watching it anymore !.....

Ratings took a dump after the Coy & Vance debacle in Season 4 and ratings didn't bounce back. Then, using miniatures for the stunts hurt ratings even more. Schneider and Wopat were asking for better scripts that never came. They asked to be able to have input on scripts and that didn't happen. Eventually, malaise set in; ratings never bounced back and the executives decided to cut their losses.

It went from "This is Bo and Luke Duke. They're cousins. They fight the system", to being about the family, then to being like a cartoon. They even tried the cartoon angle. Watching it as a kid, it never got old, because of the jumps. Watching it as an adult, it got old when it became formulaic... well before Coy and Vance... well well well before alien visitors, and jumping model cars.

I feel that a lot of heat was going down at CBS at the time, Dukes of Hazzard just caught of the eye of the snooty crudes that thought it wasn't a 'proper' form of entertainment. But guess what it spawned a short lived animated show called The Dukes which was based off Season 5 and then for the second season, once the mains returned on the show, they were on that second season. And years later, it spawned a few video games during and after its run. They were right up there with Dungeons & Dragons as far as being a target for younger audiences and same rules applied with that show as well. It got yanked off the air just before it ever had a series finale and mind you, D&D is still a running franchise. Yet the damage was already done since the gang was last seen in Honor Among Thieves. The franchise at this rate wasn't gonna lose sleep after it was taken off the air, same with Dukes of Hazzard.

First off, The Dukes of Hazzard was a spinoff of a movie called Moonrunners. If you watch that movie, and follow it with the 2005 Dukes movie, you really see the similarities. However, I believe the real nail in the coffin for the show was when they started using miniature cars for the high flying stunts in the last two seasons. They just became completely unreasonable. The show was not so much about a couple of outlaws as much as it was a fast paced comedy. The shows it was competing against were more dramatic. I love this show. Along with Knight Rider, and A-Team.

They could have done a fast and furious TV show with a similar spirit to Dukes of Hazard. One of the main cast moves to the South and rest writes itself.

The Hazzards was the most important part of my weekend nights, as a teenager! Adventure and naked fun. You knew who the good guys were and you knew who the bad guys were. The nail in the coffin was when they replaced Bo and Luke with Coy and Vance .... CRINGE! ..... and then it wasn't sure enough that the bad guys were actually bad. Writers/creative fatigue on steroids!

the dukes of hazard was just one vantage point on what the south was all about. critics are everywhere. the big problem is they casted "northerners" to play the duke boys. no hate but southerners would have added a certain spark. even when cory and vance replaced bo and luke was an undeniable fact that the sitcom was "tanking". one of the best shows and i dare say that all of the south loved it so no way they got anything wrong. later they removed the reruns due the the "battle flag" on the general lee. no way was there ever any racism or hatred on a family show such as this. the show was and still is successful. how else would you account for all of the movies that spun from it. "could it had lasted?" probably not. everything has a shelf life. but it was one ride for the books !

Bo and Luke were the main stars, but the entire regular cast was amazing. They just clicked together so well. Coy and Vance were a good try, but the chemistry just wasn't there and the show wasn't really the same. But you could say that for any of the other regulars too because it really wasn't just Bo and Luke.

The show ended because it got old and people quit watching. You lost all credibility when you said it had competition with magnum p.i. and Miami vice. Magnum was on the same network and Miami vice aired at a later time because of their mature themes. Knight rider was direct competition to the dukes airing at in the same time-slot

Had the younger cusins had gotten the part before the duke boys, then the duke boys would have had a hard time filling their shoes They played the part as good as the duke boys, but the duke boys did it first. Copycats can never replace the real thing. Like john wayne was the real cowboy, and Tom Selleck was a bad second. He could never fill johns shoes. Although he was good it just wasnt the same.
