A few points to interject: 1. The Lions made all four PAT kicks. 2. Regarding your non-windy day analysis, I always believe if you can’t trust a kicker to make an extra point in the middle of the game, you really can’t trust him to make a field goal at the end of the game. 3. I’m glad you said near the end that you wouldn’t do a Dumb Decisions (TM) video on a non-windy day for doing something every other coach would have done. I see too many writers in this analytics age criticizing coaches and managers for doing what others in their situation would have done.

>"you really can’t trust him to make a field goal at the end of the game" Well, the difference here is that if you play well, you can absolutely choose where you kick this field goal. The extra point is a fixed distance, but a field goal's yardage can be manipulated.

As much as I love what Daboll has done for the G-Men, I don’t think this was even his worst decision this past Sunday (tho I do agree it was pretty dumb). To me I think having Adoree Jackson out there in an attempt to return punts was worse because he risked losing one of his key members of the secondary and now he’s out for 4-6 weeks (not to mention it probably gave some fans PTSD for how Jason Sehorn got injured in that same fashion during the ‘98 preseason).

I strongly disagree. The extra point makes it an 11 point game. A field goal, an 8 point touchdown ties the game. In my opinion you go for 2 as late as possible. Missing the conversion here leaves you down 12 and now you need 2 touchdowns. Your declaration that you go for 2, you make it, that means it’s a 10 point game , then you still need to make an extra point later on in the game , with a field goal to tie it. Why would it be more likely to make an extra point on a later touchdown rather than this touchdown.?

They still needed two touchdowns to win the game. Pathetic decision. There's no justification for it.

The main reason the Lions have won three in a row is not necessarily because of the Lions playing good, but because of the other team making dumb decisions which handed the Lions those wins on a silver platter.

The Giants win was not on the Giants making bad decisions or failing to execute, the Lions played a good game of Football and succeeded in stopping the run by bottling up the Giant's poor OLine. I'm fine with saying that the Packers gave Detroit the game previously and that the win over Chicago was a bit fluky (some iffy officiating included), but I don't think you can call a 31-18 victory over the 7-3 Giants a fluke or stroke of luck.

I get the weather playing a factor but this to me is just a matter of going for two there or on the next TD they got in the game. I don't think it really matters considering the weather wasn't changing from that point until the end of the game. It's kinda a "whatever" decision.

Right; and if kicking an extra point would’ve been too dicey, so would kicking a field goal. So they really needed two touchdowns.

I disagree with your reasoning. The Giants defense couldn't stop the Lions. Nit completely. They've been bend but don't break in the redzone all season but it wasn't working today. A full stop was unlikely but since the Lions didn't *need* a TD he could rely on them being conservative in the redzone. He assumed the defense would give up a field goal in an optimistic scenario. So really think of the score as 12-27 in that situation. You're going to need two touchdowns and at least one PAT no matter what. If you go for two now and fail you *have* to go for two later and succeed. If you settle for a PAT now with the score functionally 12-27 you can settle for two PATs to tie, going from 13-24 to 27-27, or one PAT and one two point conversion for a win, from 13-24 to 28-27. The situation in which you don't have to go for two at least once no matter what is if Gano converts the PAT. You mentioned the Lions' defense has had Saquon's number all day - he averaged 1.5 YPC and a two-point conversion is 2 yards. Do you trust your o-line, which is down to its backup center, third string right tackle, and rookie left guard, to get Saquon those yards? It's a conservative call, no doubt, but it's realistic. Gano missed an earlier PAT but that was a mixture of the kick, the block, and the wind. I'd bet on Gano, even under the weather and with that strong wind, over that o-line no doubt.

Meh, either way a two point conversion was going to have to happen at some point in order for it to be a two possession game. Whether he tries then or he does it later doesn't matter that much (unless you go for two twice for a win rather than once for a tie.) Maybe he just wasn't feeling it or the kicker told him he could compensate for the wind. The kick was very close after all and the kicker actually looked surprised that he missed it as opposed to his first attempt where you can tell even he knew he had no chance. Also, the lions kicker made his extra points.

By far the weakest case yet for a ‘Dumb Decisions’ video. First, the assertion that being down 12 points is better than being down 11 (because of the lack of uncertainty) is highly debatable. Field goals are (usually) easier to score than touchdowns, so needing one less of the latter is usually a good thing for the offense. On top of which, a 12 point lead simplifies things for the opposing defense - knowing that a field goal is of little value for the other team, the defense can concede short yardage time wasting plays in the middle of the field to burn up the clock, while decreasing the likelihood of giving up a quick strike touchdown. Second, arguing that a team cannot rely on its kicking game given the wind conditions doesn’t mesh with the idea that cutting the deficit to 10 points is important. Scoring 10 points generally means a touchdown and two placekicks - a PAT and a field goal. That doesn’t mean much if a team can’t rely on making those placekicks, which (according to the arguments given in the video) they can’t. So being down 10 points where gusting winds have made the kicking game an iffy proposition is not the same thing as being down 10 points on a calm, windless day. Which is something the analysis in this video does not take into account. JaguarGator9, you’re better than this. Or, at least, you used to be. And hopefully you will be again.

funny, Detroit made all 4 PATs and a field Goal. I used to be a kicker in HS, you adjust your kick for the wind. This is a professional kicker, he has been doing his job for many years.

Somehow in the wind Dan Jones had 324 net yards passing & oh yeah, 2 INTs. When a team goes -3 in turnovers, -2 in dacks allowed and more penalty yards they usually lose.

As a Giants fan, I love the season we have had, but Daboll had his worst game on Sunday. As others have mentioned, his true dumbest decision was putting Adoree Jackson out as a punt returner. Our secondary is incredibly thin now.

This really didn't deserve a dumb decisions video. Detroit didn't miss an extra point in four attempts. I also don't think a team should go for 2 until its time to go for 2. The extra point puts them in position to tie the game with two scores. It would not have made sense if they were down by 13, but 12 makes perfect sense. Not to mention, look at all the passing yards in this game. Clearly the wind was not a HUGE factor. Also, the first PAT Gano attempted was blocked and would have likely been good otherwise. This is a bad take IMO.

I don’t think I agree. Wouldn’t have changed the amount they needed to win. The fact that Detroit made all 5 of their kicks. And the fact that the giants have one of the best kickers in football.

I wouldn’t call it dumb for one, they was on the side of the field where the wind was to their advantage, earlier on the wind aided miss was initially blocked, also if he makes it, it’s an 11 pt game and they still 😢have to kick a FG and a 2pt to tie anyway! So not really “dumb” or “questionable” they just got outplayed by an inferior team at home badly!

I think the dumbest decision of the weekend (outside of Hackett) might have been in a win. Belichick going for it on 4th down late in the Pats game made no sense when you realize the Jets couldn’t gain any yards so backing them up almost ensures they get the ball back in good field position. It didn’t matter because the Jets have no QB and they got a punt return to end the game but I still thought that one was dumber than Daboll.

I agree with you that they shouldnt have went for the xpt, but my reasons why are a bit different. If you make it a 10 point game after the 2pt conversion, then you hold them to a fg attempt, the game is 27-14, if you drive down the field again for 8 points and hold them to another fg, its 30-22, allowing you to make one final push for 8pts to tie and send it to OT. Even better if you went for 2 after the first td and got it, because you would have won 32-30. Thats assuming the lions can make both field goals in the high winds. Also assuming you can make 2 straight td drives in the 4th quarter. My point is the giants did not play as aggressive as they needed to win this game.
