This is a great take. The only other option I could see was making sure he had the right personnel in the game for a red zone stop. But that would be covered by calling the TO right away and not burning the 15 seconds.
@Paggy66682 жыл бұрын
The premise that the Raiders were going to spike the ball is not quite so clear, and I will argue that Carr was dropping back on the snap, not throwing it into the ground to clock it. You can't see it from the video, but I was watching it live and noticed Car turned and took a couple of drop back steps like a play was on. They may have been trying to get Denver to relax and hit a TD on a fake clock play, so Raiders were still getting 3 shots at scoring TD. I bet he saw some confusion on the part of his guys and then decided to call the TO.

I think you ought to cover The Dumbest Timeout in Joe Gibbs' Career: December 2, 2007. After a tumultuous week following the murder of all-pro safety Sean Taylor in a home invasion, the Washington football team were playing an extremely emotional home game against the Buffalo Bills at home at FedEx Field. The entire game was dedicated to Taylor with towels emblazoned with the #21 being waved in the stands to the first play being played with 10 men on the field as a tribute to their fallen star. It had been a close game with Washington up on the Bills 16-14 and the game had come down to Bills kicker Rian Lindell making a long game-winning field goal on the Washington 36 yard line with just 8 seconds left on the clock. Just before the ball was hiked, Washington's legendary coach Joe Gibbs called a timeout to ice the kicker, which had become a popular trend in pro football at the time. As the timeout ended, Lindell was going to attempt his game-winning kick again. Again, Gibbs called a timeout to ice Lindell a second time. There's just one problem. CALLING TWO CONSECUTIVE TIMEOUTS IS ILLEGAL! The officials blew the whistle and penalized Washington with unsportsmanlike conduct that cost them 15 yards and turned a long field goal on the 33 yard line into a chip shot on the 18 which Lindell easily made, won the game for Buffalo 17-16 and crushed the hearts of an already devastated Washington fanbase. Gibbs stepped down after that season.
@matthewdaley7462 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Joe Gibbs is, one, of the, greatest, coaches, ever, unfortunately, his, ill-advised, follow-up, era, with, Washington, prevented him from unequivocal reverence, plus, some fans still haven't forgiven him, for, Rocket Screen, not, to mention, that, for, all of his NASCAR success, he's still, somehow, managed to completely squander Denny Hamlin's career, that's just, totally, terrible.

I think you do have to look at the very real possibility that Carr was planning to fake spike there and throw a fade to Adams or Hollins. Either could've had a shot at a 50-50 catch there as the Broncos didn't properly line up to cover them in time. While Carr doesn't have experience with fake spikes as far as I know, Josh McDaniels does, as he was the Offensive Coordinator for the Patriots in 2007 when Brady faked a spike against the Washington Redskins before throwing at TD pass to Randy Moss. Adams was also involved in a fake spike in GB back in 2014, though that was a quick side pass rather than a goal fade. While I think clock management criticisms against Hackett and the Broncos is entirely valid, I don't believe this can be passed off as a true "Dumb Decision" unless we get direct information from Hackett, McDaniels or Carr stating that the TO wasn't called for a fake spike or that no fake spike was planned at all. For anything other than a fake spike, I agree that the TO was bad, as you either do it after the catch or let the play continue, but I think Hackett had real concerns that the Raiders could score a TD on that play, and if that's the case, he in fact may have saved the Broncos from losing in Regulation.

See on paper, calling a timeout to sort out your defense after giving up a big pivotal play makes sense. What he SHOULD have done was let the Raiders burn a down since they were clearly in formation to spike the ball, then call the timeout. The clock would have been stopped (due to the spiking) and you get all the benefits of the timeout. Yes you basically give up the chance of having the ball again in regulation but the Raiders will only have 2 chances to score a TD and can't run with only 35 seconds left. It's a best of both worlds situation.
@TheSonicsean2 жыл бұрын
Also with the Broncos ownership not only having infinite money, unlike the Raiders who are stuck with McDaniels cause they're broke, AND not having a real connection to him since Hackett was hired before they bought the team, he is 100000% gone by the start of the playoffs. As a Raiders fan, you're overreacting (in hindsight). Because: 1) Derek Carr was not was not in spiking formation and would've run a passing play on 1st and goal. PLUS, as soon as the ref called timeout, you could see Carr was about to dropped back and face right to Mack Hollins. 2) Hackett potentially stopped the Broncos from losing in regulation. You don't know what Hackett saw when he furiously called that timeout. 3) About him wasting 15 seconds before calling timeout, he never knew Carr wasn't going to spike the ball until they lined up. EVEN IF he knew Carr was not going to spike, calling a timeout 15 seconds earlier may have given the Raiders more chances of extending the drive in the event of a defensive holding/interference (a 3rd down turning to a 1st and goal), which means a higher chance of the Raiders scoring a TD. Denver would then have no choice but to go 80+ yards for a TD because the Raiders would've been up by 4 (which is unlikely given the way Russ was playing).

As things stand, he has been hampered by Russell Wilson but with a defense like Denver has, they should be winning more often. I truly hope the Broncos and Raiders keep their coaches for the rest of the season. It will help KC get that home field advantage. Hey, maybe Hackett can even get a Dumb Decisions double feature by making TWO Dumb Decisions in one game. 😁

The Chiefs, are, only, winning, the, SB, if, Tampa Bay, finds a way to, implode, and, after, the Cowboys mopped the field, with, the Vikings, yesterday, I, truly, don't see, how, that, ultimately, happens.

@@matthewdaley746 hopefully that happens, Giselle and Jiu Jitsu guy somehow distracts Tom and hopefully Cincinnati gets red hot and Cinderella story successfully in the superbowl against whoever survived the NFC

@@teen_laqueefa Oh, how, I wish I shared your optimism, the Vikings, were, the, one, slim hope that I still grasped, but, they, were, run, out, of their own building, by a Cowboys team, that, I know, for, an absolute fact, cannot, beat, Tampa Bay, at, least, the Eagles still, likely, get the bye.

If I was a Broncos fan I would be praying nightly that the new owners simply call up the Chiefs owner and offers a few billion dollars to trade team rosters, coaches and all! Let's not act like Mr. Walton doesn't have at least 3 Billion in his couch cushions. He can have a great team plus cripple a hated rival at the same time. As a Chiefs fan I would cry but wtf right? Denver could even throw in the entire Russell Wilson salary just because.

I feel this is karma punishing the broncos for the years of Elway pulling games literally out of his butt to rip the hearts out of opposing teams fans.

Forgot to mention calling the timeout early in case the Raiders score a touchdown. That's the ONLY reason I'd use my timeouts. With Raiders up 4 the Broncos would have to go the whole field. I wouldn't care about a tie at all.
@silverk4962 жыл бұрын
He didn’t call it early, he waited 15 seconds until it didn’t matter; so yea if they scored Broncs woulda been in the same situation that took it to OT. No time and no way to score. And if you missed why, its because Hackett waited until they got to the line to spike it(clock running) and called timeout instead of calling it when the previous play ended 15 seconds earlier.

@@silverk496 I was talking about when JG9 said why he would call the timeout early. He didn't mention the scenario where if the Raiders scored a touchdown.

There's plenty of great historical obscure situations described by the creator. But the recency bias is off the charts. Jaguar should stick to past events very few discuss instead of saying "EVER" about things that happened this past season.

Nat Hack is bad tbh. I'm still going to say High knee Russ is even more to blame for the broncos losing
