McCarthy’s hubris to run that final play after the timeout is amazing. If you’re wondering where the “ladder” was on that hook and ladder play he was playing center and got pancaked. The coach assumed that the 49ers defense would be so confused that no one would rush the passer. I sat in my living room hoping the niners wouldn’t sit back and let the play develop because I knew the result would be glorious. The only thing that would’ve made it sweeter would’ve been after the reception the ball would’ve gotten jarred loose and a niners defender waltzed into the end zone.

2 issues with the last play. 1. I think the lateral was supposed to go to Zeke. If that's right, McCarthy was thinking the 49ers wouldn't rush anyone. The problem there is, as you mentioned, the Niners took time out before. Zeke at center wasn't gonna catch him off guard. So, they just sent one guy to take him out of the play. 2. I actually think McCarthy was close to a decent idea. Or, at least an intriguing one. I've always thought that on these plays, you shouldn't have more than one lineman (with that one lineman being the center) on the field. Get your fastest WRs, RBs, DBs and maybe another QB out there. As long as they report as ineligible and line up correctly, it's legal. The problem? He still had linemen on the field. They were just in their normal spot. So, the same issue was there. If you get into a lateral situation, you still have guys out there that can't do much if they happen to get the ball.
@KevinT7274 Жыл бұрын
Yes you need speed on the field and a player other than the QB with a good arm, I've seen a kickoff gadget play where the return man would run up one sideline then throw the ball over to the other sideline where another return man would be waiting with a couple blockers. You're hoping the defense will pursue the ball hard, leaving their lanes which will give the play a chance of working. I could see trying something similar to that.
@GR-bn3xj Жыл бұрын
I'm not as mad about this play as others. The odds of anything normal working are almost zero. He got speed on the field and tried for something different. It's not like had he had 5 lineman protecting him and they launch a hail Mary that it had much a shot. No one can throw the ball that far. Outside of LSU vs Kentucky, I can't think of a hail Mary from that far. So he puts everything in the lateral play, but went just a bit too extreme. You have to be able to catch it and give the guy a chance to run or lateral.

I couldn’t watch the majority of this game since my cable and internet went out. I had it on the radio, and I could _hear_ the sheer stupidity of McCarthy’s play calling!

The Cowboy's slogan should be "If you think our problems are bad, wait 'till you see our solutions!"

I think the government already has dibs on that, but it works for the Cowboys too.

I worry about fixes and payoffs in pro sports. Mike Mccarthy throws this game on a payoff, and he makes more under table than he would ever make above table. We can't be so naive to think it doesn't go on. Corruption has been in sports since sports began.

As a cowboys fan y’all r just trying to find something to poke fun at. Had that play lasted longer than the 2 seconds it did, no one would be talking about it

As far as clock management goes, both coaches had awful moments - San Fran wasted a lot of time in the beginning of the final drive of the first half limiting their options to just getting the field goal before halftime instead of going for 7 which they could have easily gotten. Honestly if the Cowboys won, we would be talking about that dumb decision but between terrible throws from Dak and poor coaching from Mike, yeah 49ers won. That said, I don't put much faith in 49ers clock management skills either. There were many poor plays from both offenses and missed takeaways by both defenses. However, the best or wildest and most exciting football seemed to be on special teams!
@corybarrett2394 Жыл бұрын
Shanahan's reasoning was that he did not want to leave Dallas with any time on the clock if San Francisco failed to convert on third down (couple this with the fact that Dallas got the ball to start the second half). It's difficult to say that the Niners could have easily scored a touchdown when they had been kept out of the endzone up to that point. One can criticize it as too conservative but it was intentional.

Thank god for talking about this, I do not understand what the hell he was thinking after seeing this not work for the colts 😂😂😂

McCarthy broke the tie with Nathaniel Hackett for most Dumb Decisions by one coach-although Hackett's record is more impressive since his 4 happened during just one season (and not even a full one at that).

PS that's the best setup for a Dumb Decision ever..you really had us fooled for a moment thinking it would be the punt and not the final play. 😅🤣😂

It only makes sense for me for Zeke to have been the one to come around as the ladder, but he stayed in a blocking stance far longer than for that to make sense. If not that, I have no idea why they would put Zeke at center
@flute5764 Жыл бұрын
Why would they have the only person blocking be the ladder? If this is right (which could be true due to how stupid Mike McCarthy is), then Jesus Christ...

This isn't the worst decision McCarthy has made as a coach. Lets not forget that loss Green Bay has to the Seahawks in the NFC championship game.
@matthewdaley746 Жыл бұрын
The dumbest decision in that Game, was, Pete Carroll allowing the Seahawks to celebrate uncontrollably, two, weeks, later, their treachery, was, returned in kind, three, years, later, it, was, the, Patriots', turn.

I still cant believe GB had that nice lead with not much time remaining and they blew it. GB mistakes has been making being a Bears fan in Wisconsin easier in the last 10 years even if Aaron "owns us Bear fans".

A TWOFER from McCarthy!! Despite two trips to the playoffs, I see Jerry canning his ass and bringing in SEAN PAYTON. Payton lives in Dallas and has a history with Jones. I’d love to see it.

As a Packers fan, the downfall of McCarthy has been satisfying. He's always been a terrible coach but the talent at GB stopped most people from seeing it for years.

The previous plays were equally stupid. Throws a long bomb downfield incomplete instead of a short sideline pass, Then a sideline pass that tight end Schulze doesn't even ATTEMPT to get both feet inbounds which he easily could have.

As a Cowboys fan I have 0 problems with the last play. We couldn't even get in range to throw a hail Mary. I never blame the last play like that for a loss. We had a chance with 3 minutes left to go down and score and Dak choked. We had so many chances to make things better that I have no issue with the last play. It's a miracle play at that point. It's not supposed to work anyways.
