He’s not the world’s greatest climber. He is the world’s boldest and most badass, but the title of worlds greatest climber currently goes to Adam Ondra who climbs the hardest grades.
@ErasmusLocke
@ErasmusLocke 5 жыл бұрын
Kyle Mohler completely different disciplines. Alex is a middling 5.14 climber when he does sport, but that’s not his focus. He’s done more legendary alpine stuff than Adam by a million miles. He did the Fitz Traverse, which Adam wouldn’t even be able to start. Alex’s focus is different than Adam’s. When Adam goes to the Valley, he’s stoked to make it up Salathe, where Alex would link Salathe and the Cathedrals and call it a “chill afternoon”. Adam couldn’t do The Nose in under three hours, much less two (yet). By the same token, Alex can’t climb 5.15 (though, he may still climb 15a or b at some point). Worlds greatest climber is a fluid thing that depends on what discipline, because there’s no one that boulders v17, climbs 5.15d, and speed climbs El Cap in under 2 hours. Daniel Woods, Nalle Hukkataival, Adam Ondra, Alex Honnold, Tommy Caldwell, etc all belong in that discussion (as well as others), which is what makes it great campfire discussion. 👍🏼

In a few years there will be an other Adam Ondra doing "harder" things. People will repeat "SIlence". I do not think that will happen with Alex "Free Solo" El Cap. Not in the next 30 or so years. So "greatest climber" for sure. Greatest athletic achievement maybe but only for the mental side of it.
@jon630
@jon630 5 жыл бұрын
@@ErasmusLockeI'll throw a log into the fire. First off, not sure I agree that 5.14 is "middling". Most people spend almost a decade of climbing just getting to the point where they can top out on a 5.14a. I know you probably meant "middling" in the context of professional, sponsored climbers who are at the leading edge of the sport. But it's a bit misleading in a comment section so obviously filled with people completely educated about climbing. That aside, I agree with everything else you said. I would like to add rising stars David Lama and Ashima Shiraishi to the discussion (and also Chris Sharma since he's probably the second strongest sport climber). David Lama I like because I think mixed climbing and alpineering are too often overlooked in the discussion for "best climber". Ashima I think is progressing at insane levels and it's scary to think where she'll be once she can focus on climbing full time. Personally, I would still say Alex is the best climber. I think the amount of perfection required in free soloing is just incredible. Alex's portfolio of both free solo and free ascents is almost untouchable. Free solo of Moonlight Buttress, NW Face of Half-Dome, Rainbow Wall (which to me was his most impressive climb prior to this one just because of how little prep he did...and because Red Rock is my local crag), El Sendero Luminoso, and now Freerider on El Cap. Combine that with his speed ascents of the Nose and Half Dome and his mountaineering feats of completing both the Fitz Roy and Torre Traverses in Patagonia and in my eyes no other climber can compete. I get that guys like Adam Ondra and Tommy Caldwell (I'd probably say Tommy is the second best climber after Alex) are pushing the limit of what it's possible to climb (on sport and big wall routes, respectively), but Alex is pushing the limit of the human body itself. Guys (and gals) who focus on sport and boulder routes might have higher peaks in technical prowess and climbing strength, but Alex's consistency is just too good.
@ErasmusLocke
@ErasmusLocke 5 жыл бұрын
Jon Scheaffer thanks for clarifying what I meant, 14 is definitely not a grade to take lightly, though when talked about with those other climbers, it’s not really a cutting edge grade. I will say that Adam almost onsighting Salathe a couple days ago is incredible and as he’s still quite young, he definitely has time to round out his climbing. I think Alex was a similar age when he started going on expeditions with Mark Synnott. I will say Alex is one of the more likable and watchable climbers. I wish more attention was given to Jonathan Siegrist, who in my opinion has some of the best technical ability I’ve seen. His crimping is insane.

@@ErasmusLocke Dave Macleod- is definitely the best all round climber, exceptionally good trad climber- E11/12, 5.14D in sport, bouldering v15, first person to solo 5.14b and one of the best winter climbers in Britain and the world. Alex nor Adam can combine all that, I bet you've never heard of him , he tends to climb in Scotland.

He is in the top 5 of climbers in the world, but he's got some competition! Adam Ondra would definitely be in serious competition with him, as would Chris Sharma. You've also got Ashima Shiraishi and David Lama too. That's not even breaking it down to different types of climbing, not everything is about free soloing. Sports climbing, Bouldering, Big Wall climbing... they're all different so they each have different people who are the 'best' at any given time of that style of climbing worldwide. Personally I grew up slab climbing, outdoors on Granite in the Peak District so I have my own bias. My Dad spent the early 70's learning to climb from oldtimers like Joe Brown and Don Whilans, when they weren't jetting off to climb in more exotic climes. My climbing hero is always going to be Johnny Dawes, I was lucky enough to be a wee kiddie around throughout the 80's and watched him become the amazing climber he's known for today. But thankfully there's always another new route to conquer somewhere in the world, even if most of us can only enjoy watching this ever-growing band of climbing geniuses actually get up them!
@JedlyMT
@JedlyMT 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, he isn't climbing the hardest routes in the world, but he is climbing the hardest discipline in the world. Knowing you have a rope as safety, you can push yourself to your utmost physical limits. So in that regard, there are way better climbers. But free soloing 3000' at such a hard grade is(at the moment) probably the hardest thing anyone can do climbing. Ueli Steck(RIP) also did this in Alpine style and before Honnold achieved EL CAP, I would argue Ueli was the best climber in the world. Most people that free solo usually end up dying because of it. For Alex to do it at such a hard level and come out alive is unbelievable. And if you've ever even touched a hold at 5.12 or harder, for him to do this up to 5.13 is crazy. Now, as far as greatest human achievement, that's way more debatable. Like he said, going to the moon is pretty nuts. But that took a lot of people to achieve that. Alex is one guy. Granted, he didn't put the route up, so that was already done for him. I guess if he had found a route and was the first one on it and then solo'd it at this level, that would be even more impressive. HAHA! This stuff will always be up for debate on who is the greatest, but he has set the bar pretty high for the next kid. I don't know if it'll ever get repeated. I kinda hope it doesn't just for safety. :)

@@JedlyMT Well said. The threat of imminent death, plus the difficulty, plus the grandeur of El Cap, elevate Alex above the rest. That may not be fair, but it's true. I do think it's the greatest athletic (and possibly mental) achievement of all time. I know that sounds crazy, but that's my opinion. The NY Times came mighty close to saying that.

I would not say he is the world's greatest climber, neither the first solo climber, it's only because of Jimmy Chin, who himself is a great climber and an adventure movie Maker free solo became a hit, rock climbing is so versatile and vast as a sport that you cannot verify that one person is the greatest, if I had to say if he should be the greatest, than what about Tommy caldwell who found the route to the most difficult big wall; Dawn wall. What about Adam Ondra who found the world's first 15d pitch; silence. What about Chris Sharma the veteran most versatile climber, I guess all of them and much of many who are not metioned has climbed much more difficult routes, but that being said Alex is a great climber and he himself know that climbing is being true to himself and staying humble. So shout out to all the boulder and big wall climber, you all are the world's greatest climbers.

dreaminginnoother in the words of George Mallory, “because it’s there.” Or to quote Warren Harding, “because we’re insane! That’s the only explanation.” To explain a little more, climbers in general seek perfection. You haven’t completed a climb until you’ve done it with no falls. Free soloing takes that to its fullest degree, because obviously you have no safety system to fall back on. Watching the climb, you can see how absolutely dialed in he is. Every move was flawless.
