The "don't use reference" advice always baffled me. Humans have been using reference since they started painting on cave walls. That's how art happens wtf.

Anyone who says "don't use references" doesn't know what a reference is. A reference is when you LOOK AT THE THING YOU ARE DRAWING. - If you are drawing a subject, get pictures of the subject. - If you are trying to learn an art style, get samples of the style. - If you are having trouble with a pose, find photos of the pose if you can, otherwise use a posable doll IRL or a 3d model like JustSketchMe or the one that ships with Clip Studio Paint. - TRACING IS NOT REFERENCING. COPYING IS NOT REFERENCING. You can and SHOULD use these as study methods, but DO NOT claim them as your own work. Remember those "draw Pokemon from memory" challenges in the late 2000s/early 2010s, and how hard it was to draw a cartoon creature from a game you played nearly every day? USE YOUR DANG REFERENCES
