You missed the two Leon Lett plays. 1) Superbowl XXVII, Jan. 1993: Late in the fourth quarter, Lett recovered a fumble on the Dallas 35-yard line and ran it back towards the end zone. When he reached the 10-yard line, Lett slowed down and held the ball out as he approached the goal line. However, Lett did not see Bills wide receiver Don Beebe chasing him down from behind. Beebe knocked the ball out of Lett's outstretched hand just before he crossed the goal line, which sent the ball through the endzone, and resulted in a touchback that cost Lett his touchdown. It also cost Dallas the record for most points scored in a Superbowl. 2) Thanksgiving day, 1993 (the following season): The game was played during a rare snow and sleet storm in Dallas. Dallas was leading the Miami Dolphins 14-13. The Dolphins attempted a game winning 41 yard field goal with 15 seconds left. The kick was blocked. Four or five Miami players had encircled the ball and were moving with it as the ball rolled down towards the endzone. While most of the Dallas players were celebrating their apparent victory, Leon Lett hustled from 30+ yards away and dove inside the circle of Miami players in an attempt to recover the ball which he botched. In the resulting chase for possession, the Dolphins recovered in the end zone, but due to muffed kick rules, the ball was awarded to them on one-yard line. Had Lett simply done nothing, the Cowboys would have automatically received possession as the play would have been whistled dead and the team would have received possession at the line of scrimmage. Instead Miami kicked a short field winning field goal. This was Don Shula's, the head coach of Miami, 300th regular season victory. An amusing fact about this play is that a Dallas fan sent Leon Lett a letter trying to console him mentioning a player who goofed during a Superbowl by slowing down and holding the ball out as he was about to cross the goal line only to have the ball knocked out of his hand at the last second. The person writing the letter didn't realize that this "other player" was in fact Leon Lett! Leon Lett actually was an excellent defensive lineman who went to two pro bowls. But these two dim-witted plays are the only plays anyone can remember about him. Similarly, Jim Marshall was a great defensive lineman who is in the hall of fame but the play he is remembered for is running 65 yards the wrong way. Sometimes life is just not fair!

Let's be real - those plays show up in _every_ 'bad play' or 'dumb decisions' video that's ever been made. Especially the one in the snow where he touches the ball and it gets ruled a touchback, or whatever. The Colts video shows up less, but it's a whole team doing something done, not just one dude, which multiplies the stupidity. I'm ok with those videos not showing up this time. It ain't like their hard to find and it makes room for new content. I'm quite sure there's a lot of dumb plays we haven't seen. I wanna see 'em all. In my peewee basketball league when I was like 6, my team had the ball at the opposing basket and missed and rebounded it over and over like 3 times before the opposing team rebounded it and for some reason the kid took a shot at his own basket. In that whole scramble that ended with a kid on the opposing team shooting at his own basket, I got the rebound off that shot and forgot that that was the opposing basket since they had just took a shot at it, so I ran down the court and made a layup, which was my own basket. It was super embarrassing. My coach on the sidelines was yelling “NO NO NO!” but what I heard as I was running was “GO GO GO!” That mistake stuck with me all the way through that league. Even though I was like the #2 or #3 scorer in my age group, that was basically all anyone ever remembered about me. It wasn’t until I grew out of that league and started playing in junior high that I was finally able to move on from that. It’s funny now looking back though. Shit happens lmao.

If I remember correctly, the flag on the Steelers after the blocked field goal return was for an illegal bat. The Steelers' holder (#4) knocked the ball out of bounds so that the Bears couldn't fall on it to score a TD. If the ball had bounced out of bounds on its own, the Bears would score nothing, but you're not allowed to knock it out of bounds in that situation, so the Bears were awarded a safety. It was still a really good play, because it saved 5 points.

Regarding the college play where the QB fumbled into the other team's endzone, with the defender recovering and then trying a basketball-style pass to keep the ball alive while falling out of bounds... if the defender who recovered the fumble actually got the pass off before touching out of bounds, then since that was an illegal forward pass (in a team's own endzone), I think it would also result in a safety. On the other hand, if the defender who recovered actually touched out of bounds before the ball left his hand, then it would be a touchback.

3:11 I went to another college game where the same thing happened. Wisconsin was playing an FCS school called Western Illinois and the Western Illinois player kneeled in the end zone for a safety.

What happened on the Colts' dumb play was that the unusual formation was supposed to draw the Patriots offsides to get the first. The ball was not supposed to be hiked. But they center was a substitution who had never practiced the play before, so didn't know he wasn't supposed to hike the ball. It was an overly complicated trick play from the coach that bit him in the butt.

The Seahawks had Beast Mode, who had just easily run for 4 yards. You had the ball at the 1. You undoubtedly had the best short-yardage back in the NFL. GIVE HIM THE BALL. It’s a NO-BRAINER. Pete Carroll had a beef with Marshawn Lynch. (That’s why Lynch left the Seahawks.) So Carroll couldn’t stand Lynch getting the glory of scoring the Super Bowl Winning TD. So to prevent Lynch from getting the glory, Carroll instructed the OC to run a pass play. The OC called the specific play, but Carroll called for it to be a pass. Pete Carroll lost a sure Super Bowl win because he hated Marshawn Lynch that much.

Regardless of the drama between Carroll and Lynch, it was still a sound call. The Seahawks did not have the time to run the ball three times. If they wanted to get three attempts to score, either 2nd or 3rd down HAD to be a passing play. Carroll tried it on 2nd down, called a play that almost never results in an interception, and the Patriots just played it perfectly. It by no means was a stupid call though.

Dominic Brunsmeier they weren’t going to run a play. They were trying to get the patriots to jump offsides, and if they didn’t jump, they would call time out. Unfortunately, they had a backup snapper in, and he thought that the QB called for a snap, so he snapped the ball. That play was just a real bad play by the snapper.
