I honestly kinda hate it when people say, "When you look at it on its own it's not that bad," because 1: it's supposed to be an adaptation, and 2: it could still be terrible on its own.
@daniboy41532 жыл бұрын
Exactly!
@varsityreviews7072 жыл бұрын
It's a two way street. An adaptation has to succeed at two things: being a good adaptation and being good on its own. There are several examples of adaptations being good adaptations but not really being good on their own, for example, Aquaman I hear is a great adaptation of the comic (i could be 100% wrong, this is just what I heard) just as there's plenty of examples of the inverse, such as this movie. I personally believe that a movie should always try to be a good movie first. If a movie can stand on it's own, then it can succeed at being a good movie. In Uncharted's case, I agree. As a movie on it's own, it is perfectly fine, and is, dare I say, a fun adventure movie. As an Uncharted movie, it's terrible. But on it's own? It's fine. I'm not saying that's a good excuse to make, nor am I saying that it's wrong to point out it's a terrible adaptation. It's just in my humble opinion, I'd much rather watch an adaptation that's bad but a fun movie than an adaptation that's good but a bad movie, like Twilight. Those are as far as I know good adaptations of the books, but they're not good movies.
@lordmontymord87012 жыл бұрын
True. They could have made an original IP, but they used Uncharted to get at least the fans of the game in the cinema. If that's not an invitation to compare movie and games then i don't know. Of course you can simply use a story that was told before and make your own interpretation, but i think we all know Sony and the producers didn't put that much intellectual work into this. And no. 2 is also right: If we forget the connection to the games the movie is still bad ...

It’s not even that. It’s the fact that MOST of game takes place in an “uncharted” location. In the movie, 90% takes place in an Urban setting. Actually no, even then, you could argue that other then the campsite and the monastery/shimbala, most of uncharted 2 takes place in an urban environment. So then what is the issue? The issue is that it lacks that GRAND SPECTACLE! The amazing music! The tense atmosphere (check out “unwelcomed guests” and “the bunker” chapter from uncharted 1), and the love that come from the games. Honestly if they just had Nathen Filion as Nate and just made it a show instead of a movie, it would have probably been better.

i will never forget my first introduction to and impression of this series of games. my cousin, a couple years older than me, was the one who introduced it to me after he got it as a gift. i was 9/10 years old, and it was around the release of uncharted two. I remember watching my cousin start the game, the train crash cold open, how absolutely enthralled, captivated, and invested in the story I immediately was. I had never seen the series before this, I remember when I described it to my peers, I called a cinematic experience that you sometimes got to control, I explained my joy of watching over playing as being that watching the gameplay was not so different to watching a movie, even if i didn't choose the dialogue choices. it was maybe an hour or so of the game that i watched, maybe more, i cant quite remember, but it was so influential that in 2016 when uncharted 4 was released, i bought the uncharted 4 ps4 bundle, along with a 1-3 bundle just so I could play the games myself (i played the entire series during my wisdom teeth removal. pivotal core memory for sure). Edit: I was also very excited for the release of this movie and interested in seeing it. I wasnt so sure about the casting choices but I wanted to remain optimistic/hopeful. In the end, I absolutely agree that at the core the writers/producers/whoever, didnt understand what made the narrative of the games so endearing and captivating and important to its audience. I think I enjoyed the film at an extremely surface level of omg game i love has been adapted to a film, but when it comes to comparing it to the narrative and world building of the games, it definitely feels like a slap in the face towards the sincerity and humanity of the well-written (though not without flaws) character driven universe of the uncharted game series.

i don't think the writer, or writers for the movie were that passionate for the games, when you show me the dialogue from the actual games it makes me feel like the writer(s) were having fun coming up with them and have a reason as to why they say what they do. most of the dialogue from the movie doesn't even seem to have that much character in it... it's unfortunate this was an enjoyable watch, thanks for pumping out peak content my man

4:48 My sister (who for context has only played Animal Crossing New Horizons and who has _never_ wanted to play a story-driven single-player game) had her eyes GLUED to the screen when I was playing Uncharted 4. She loved the characters and the story. And that is what makes me angry about the Uncharted movie. I know for a _fact_ there are people out there that would probably never touch the Uncharted games, but would _love_ the story in them. The Uncharted movie could've been that bridge, bringing Uncharted back into the mainstream, becoming something that gamers _and_ non-gamers could bond over. Anyway, that's why I'm angry 😂

When this film came out in theaters last year I and a couple of friends went to go see it and when the film was over I kept saying it was terrible and how it's not even a good film, but my friends thought that I was overreacting because they know I don't like Tom Holland. I gotta say 4 is my personal favorite. I could go on for hours why but I'm just going to bring up 1 example. Uncharted 4 is kinda lacking in set pieces and action compared to the other games at least % wise and this was done intentionally. We can see Nathan is desperately trying to avoid falling back into his habits of adventuring because he promised Elena that he put that behind him and the one thing he loves more than the adventure is her. But his brother's life being on the line causes him to jump into another adventure anyway and through out the game you can see that his sole focus is saving Sam. That is until the end of the Madagascar section of the game. The devs completely let loose with what's in my opinion the best set piece in the franchise. The collapsing bell tower, a really fun puzzle that also helps you learn about the pirate captains, a hectic run away from an armored car, and some seriously fun vehicle combat jumping from one to another. The player after being kinda starved for super interesting set pieces is now getting all of it and then some and are having an absolute blast. So is clearly Nathan Drake with that laugh he lets out with Sam by the end of it. But then as he gets back to his apartment Elena is there and it hits like a truck. You now feel JUST AS GUILTY as Nathan does because you were having just as much fun as him and it results in an absolutely heartbreaking scene with excellent dialogue, performances, music, and everything. The way this is set up is pure genius and it eventually leads to the other best part of the game which is Elena and Nathan's dynamic in the 3hd act.

W Uncharted 4 is an amazing game. Not even speaking on the story, it’s hard to believe it came out in 2016 due to how impressive it is in terms of graphical fidelity, it was so ahead of it’s time. But yeah I agree with you

I wished Sully woulf be played by JK Simmons and Drake be played by some unknown blank actor cause you wouldnt be distracted by the other persons work. Like if you see Tom Cruise or someone similar to him you just see this as a MI movie. Tom just gives "I am quirky Nathan Drake" rather than "I am a person who uses humor to lighten the mood"

Filmento did a great video that talked about this, in part. I think it was his Sonic 2 video, but he compares where and how that movie succeeded to how a number of other video game movies handled the same things. One of the best points about Uncharted was that it just took a bunch of set pieces that we can see from playing the game, and better executed, and tried pitifully to "recreate" them.

God you nailed a lot of points I’ve ranted to my friends about this movie. It could’ve been called anything and just been another mediocre movie, but they just had to slap the Uncharted title one there and ruin it. I also can’t stand how none of the characters act like they do. Literally the first time Nate and Sully meet, Sully betrays the people he was working for to save Nate and seemingly has Nates back at every moment. Sully would never pull a move like ditching him at the auction house. There’s no wit, there’s no relationship building, nothing that makes uncharted great.

I feel the reason why us true fans of Uncharted loved the story was because we saw our own flaws in Nate. But it told us no matter what happens you get back up and fight for what you love and in the end of each game he nukes the mystical treasure he was after to have the real treasure in life which is love/family. So for anyone to say this movie is good needs to reevaluate themselves because they are blind mfs
