Something a bit different - turned some brass to create a piece approximating to required profile and used a graver for later stages of turning, followed by finishing. Also, two or three small interest items.To contact me about the surface grinders - email - alumbankweb at comcast.net and I'll put you in touch with Norman.

us old guys have much knowledge to impart, so we seemingly ramble. but as we know from experience, many interconnections exist beyond the moment of point and how one arrived there. this is the logic of proper instruction, explanation of all corollary information leading to the fact at hand. to-wit the ramble. so meander at your pleasure!!

The dummy round is pretty as a piece of jewelry. Rianna will want a pair for earrings! 😄 Didn't know you had a taper attachment. Cool. Take care of you back. Cheers, Mike

Hi Mike - thanks. Earrings - haha now there's a thought. I do have a proper taper attachment but takes ages to set up so compound was only way to go for this project, apart from which angle changes were needed quite quickly. ATB :)

Nicely done. Also my sympathies, re "The Back". When The Back hurts, it hurts, no matter what. Hurts to sit. Hurts to stand. Hurts to lie down. And all that pharmaceuticals do is minimize your ability to care.

Hi Dan - thanks. Yes, the old back is not very forgiving - plus of course there's a limit to pain meds as eventually all they do is mess with other things! Working within limitations seems main way to go. ATB.

Been there. Done that. Recovery took a couple years, therapy, exercise, different shoes and lots of short walks every day. Also, I had to stop acting like an indestructible 19-year-old.

Hey Chris, nice job on the dummy projectile, it looks awesome! I think you did quite a good job on the ogive profile, without a tracer attachment freehand is about it after turning the successive tapers as you did. I like your idea of using the graver tool, almost like using a skew when turning wood, it seems to work well with softer metals. Thanks for the shout out, was just glad to see you out in your happy place again. Sorry to hear your back is really bugging you again, hopefully it's more manageable for you soon.
@ChrisB257
@ChrisB257 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Everett, Thanks - it was an interesting challenge. A tracer attachment would have been a real luxury.! It had been a long time since using the graver and have to be pretty careful with that but it can be very useful for some jobs. The back - a long term problem and not one that is really solvable unfortunately - still, hope for the odd better day but now of course cold is going to be the extra problem for shop time. BTW - there's a guy on Science channel prog called i think Steven Foster - he's a physicist and appears on progs like 'Strange Evidence' and 'Engineering Disasters' type stuff - I could swear he's your twin brother :)

I love that you find these machines and mention them in your videos especially since you arent far from me. I am actually looking for a surface grinder but I am looking for a 120V grinder which is really rare. I think most are 220V. I also was considering the lathe from the previous video. That was a killer price he was asking.

Hi Brandon - the seller of the surface grinders is not all that far from me and I'd guess they are for 120v probably. I can always give you his number if you email me. I don't know yet whether the Monarch has sold - sure would have liked that myself.

Hi Chris. I hear you about the back. I had L5-S1 caged, screwed, and fused. And it's not right. The pain is awful even while medicated. I don't make many videos because by the time I think I should. I've already gone halfway or more through what I'm doing. Anyways, I like your videos. And if it takes longer to make one, oh well. It'll be fine.
@ChrisB257
@ChrisB257 6 жыл бұрын
Hi - L5/S1 is a common problem and sadly surgery is often not entirely successful - my problem is such that I cannot see surgical intervention being enough of a gamble to risk. Thanks for the kind words - seems there are many of us out there with similar sorts of trouble. Ever hopeful anyways to manage the occasional video when I can. ATB.

Hi Don, Sorry we have to both share back problems - it does make for a less than comfortable life much of the time! Relief for me is mainly not doing what aggravates it plus meds when needed - still hope to get a bit of shop time when I can though, if frozen nuts doesn't make shop too much like a fridge! :) ATB.

Gday Chris, I’ve been checking everyday to see if you have produced another video and straight away as soon as I seen it was up I stop everything I was doing to watch, I would be a proud as punch to create a work piece as nice as yours, I’m full of arthritis and bones are necrotic and I know the pain you are having, my joints are extremely painful, it’s never ending, I still enjoy getting out on the lathe but believe me my work is nowhere near the quality of yours, can’t wait till your next video, keep your chin up mate and please take it easy, cheers Matty

Hi Matty - thanks for dropping by - my vids are certainly a bit infrequent these days. The effects of age really suck for sure and make for much frustration. I still hope to manage the occasional video all things being equal - maybe we'll get a warmer spell before winter really bites and I can at least manage something that is fairly quick. Take care, ATB.

A brilliant fix on the little sander, you would think they would fit a ptfe pad on that, the rubber pad must cause a lot of drag, the 30mm came out well, I still have a large box of the projectiles in the barn, painted blue, not sure what that indicates. Keep cosy now the temperature is dropping ! Chris B.
@ChrisB257
@ChrisB257 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris - the rubber backing pieces were terrible - just eroded away with loads of rubber particles and even a smell due to friction heating! Now at least it is way more serviceable. I forget color codes for 30mm - blue sounds though a bit like a practice round. Temps now suddenly like January - crazy!! ATB

@@ChrisB257 I am sure you are correct on the practice round being blue ,I also have some with a nylon nose, but a lot of my stuff is experimental. We now have dull weather, although not cold, just dull, big change from the 45 degs we had last month, it changes very quickly!

Sorry to hear your back is giving you so much trouble. I take Gabapentin, it's a Nerontin for nerve pain. Do you think Gabapentin might help some. It keeps me going. Nice work on hand cutting the radius profile. Waffling doesn't bother me, I do it too.
@ChrisB257
@ChrisB257 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, Thanks. Well, I'm glad you get relief from the Gabapentin but I tend to try and do best I can without analgesics - other than occasional naproxin sodium sometimes. I guess I medicate for it (apart from other darned meds I have to take!) according to the day - some days manage without anything but now and again pop a codeine. Much as anything just have to control what I do and how I do it. I'm a bit paranoid about meds side effects! :) BTW - few days back enjoyed using some of those most useful spacers you gave me. Just having first major hit of winter! :( Hope all well. ATB :)

I know your pain, I live with it every day! I just had an appointment with the neurosurgeon and they are going to implant some electrons into my spinal cord to hopefully help block some of the pain. I already have a hardware store in my lower back where I shattered a vertebrae about 15 yrs ago! I can’t stand for more than 30 seconds before my back goes into spasms. Get another opinion from another doctor!
@ChrisB257
@ChrisB257 6 жыл бұрын
I sympathize with your problem totally. Hopefully electrode implants will help quite a bit... sure hope it helps you. My background long ago is medical and the general assessment of the problem as it is right now is such that risk can very likely outweigh benefit. Could well be eventually I'll have no choice other than surgical intervention.
@RockingJOffroad
@RockingJOffroad 6 жыл бұрын
Chris, I have had back pain for most of my life, I used to hear the line “ the risks don’t out weight the benefits” before. One day I got out of bed and went flat on the floor , it took me about 15 minutes until I could get up due to back spasms, then managed to make it to the closest chair in the living room before collapsing into that. I was home alone at the time. I ended up stuck there for a few hours until my daughter came home to call 911, I was admitted to the hospital for 5 days and they ran all kinds of tests, when I was released I asked the Doctor what we’re going to do, he said we have to wait til it gets bad. I asked what the hell is bad, he is response was just the risks don’t out weigh the benefits. Then 15 yrs ago I had an accident that broke my back.

great videos Chris! Say, what would it take to get some degree of climate control in your shop? I for one would be willing to contribute...just a thought.
@ChrisB257
@ChrisB257 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Climate control would be a real treat but - I am never out there for really long periods and the cost of fuel would just not be manageable. Now with shop time being more sporadic I just have to cope with a space heater to help out when needed - I'll certainly still get a bit of shop time when I can.
