I worked for the Academy in the past. Its very difficult having conversations about film with them because they are very critical about what they consider “cinema” and worth holding up in high regards. “Snobby” is definitely a word, but “frustrating” is more accurate as a movie lover. The most frustrating is how they will refer to anything else as “genre” and yet ignore the fact that drama is just another genre. Celebration of film just isn’t what they are about and they made that evident when they tried to cut the awards for Best Edit and Cinematography.

About the logistics of the oscar the scope is really narrow, and a lot of movies fall through the cracks. Also only members of the academy can evaluate the movies, and usually those are people who have won an award. agreen in a list for the year is too big of a task, specially if you need to watch those movies. so the movies have to reach the eyes of the members, which sometime that determines the success in the awards. yeah I think dune part 2 suffer for 2 simple reasons: it's a second part, and also it was screen months ago. and the majority of the members in the academy are actors, so drama is unevenly preferred. fantasy, horror, comedy and other genres tend to underperform aswell.

I think best picture is more than enough, cinematography and sound design as well. An hour was wasted on a forced romance that did not feel real at all, Zendaya was not the right pick. What makes her such an amazing actress is her ability to play such a grounded and realistic character like in Euphoria. This film needed the exact opposite. She came off as a sore thumb in an environment that was very well portrayed as a distance world with a distant culture. This made the actual exciting parts extremely rushed and honestly anti-climactic. I was disappointed.
@humbleopulence8 сағат бұрын
@@CinePhile_Girl_Mahira I agree. The entire second half of part two ruins what both it's previous half AND the entire previous film, bare bones though it may have been, set up. Not only is the third act rushed, it's also edited like a series of vignettes (the entire book is adapted this way, as though it's all Vignettes of Dune) that barely have connective tissue to the previous beats shown and none of the weight and importance of the many elements of this world, least of which is the spice, is ever shown, spoken about or otherwise underlines, so that Paul's ultimatum to blow up the spice field carries any weight at all. For god's sake, if you stop taking spice, you die. Paul is willing to kdoom the entire universe by killing the command structure of the imperium, including himself, his mother, his wife, and his sister. People will whine when they are really into the idea of something, but the awards and Oscars are based on ACTING. Duh. The movie was a smash hit, sure. It had a lot of great things about it, sure. But, the books as well as the movie are commentaries on politics and religion. It is the entire theme. Every character represents some kind of archetype or stereotype, including the main characters. It wasn't written nor intended to strike a nerve on somebody's heart strings, but just their brain strings or opinion strings. The material just isn't conducive to to what theater is. Material such as a Tale of Two Cities would have the same issue. The heroes journey in the story ends up with genocide. Tough luck, fellas.

Villeneuve is getting the recognition he deserves. He wants to make a female centered version of Dune. I still feel sore about the gender bend of Liet Kynes with the actress Sharon Duncan Brewster. While Brewster did a wonderful job with the material she was given WB missed an opportunity to make a show that would have followed the earlier lives of characters in Dune. The Problem, they’re mostly men. WB could have adapted the exciting materials written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson but Villeneuve and WB had to get on some band wagon cause celeb of focusing on women. In doing so they have done a disservice to women when they ought to have just followed Herberts books more faithfully. Had WB not gone along with Villeneuve they could have adapted the House series, House Atreides, Harkonnen, and Corrino, and made really exciting show on a more affordable budget than the goat manure that is Dune Prophecy. WB could have had a great show in those books but they had chase a cause celeb even if it meant the integrity of the source material. What does Villeneuve and WB get for this, an empty thanks which is what they deserve. I tend to hope that the Oscars do give awards to Emilia Perez because I hope the backlash will be swift and even political. It would do WB and Disney both some good to encourage that Emilia Perez win Oscars so that Netflix can take the backlash for a change as they did when Netflix had Cuties. And it would give Disney / Lucasfilm the opening to hire me so that Lucasfilm can begin to attract audiences instead of annoying them. As for Mr. Brolin I find his words empty, if he really wants to do something about the industry he works in I sincerely suggest he get in the car with Matthew McConaughey and company as they push for Texas to put up money to compete with Hollywood. Dune part 2 was a good film but it is no Oppenheimer, the movie it got out of the way of to have a chance at awards. And again WB has itself to blame for why their relationship with Nolan soured. Villeneuve and WB got what they deserve and fans and I have every reason to point that out to them and tell them to stop looking for Hollywood’s approval. Heck WB would be well served to pull an “All The Money in the World” on Brewster and have Villeneuve reshot her scenes with a man. WB would profit more by having Villeneuve reshoot the ending of Part 2 with dialogue from the book. Zendaya’s career would get a boost from such a change and WB still is being slow on making a teaser trailer with Momoa being made into a ghola of Duncan Idaho. Look I really want Disney / Lucasfilm to hire me so can make a lot of Lucasfilm’s rivals pay for their hesitation and their lack of integrity to source material.

TBH, while the film had stunning, and striking visuals, the story was definitely lacking. Personally, I found it a bit boring. 🤷♂️

Frankly, Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune' is not the hill to die on. Neither movie was that good. Example: When Feyd Routha supposedly hooked up with the young Bene Gesserit woman, WTF was that about? Also, the arena scene with Feyd killing the others look about as real as a comic book. The old 'Babylon 5' series had better special effects. The so-called music by Hans Zimmer was mostly discordant noise.
