The Road To DUNE 2021 continues with my latest video essay on the Syfy DUNE Miniseries that released in 2000. Hope you enjoy it!

Am looking for your Children of DUNE review, not seeing it, after listening to this because I'm checking on any new reviews of the Syfy DUNE projects which were worthy for their era and imho Children of DUNE the best balance of book & adaptions of a DUNE novel and needed Game of Thrones HBO effects. I also love Brian Tyler's best themed Arrakis Dune soundtrack as I like John Williams type of motifs than Zimmer's droning meditation aural. Maybe because of my nasal sinus issues it annoyed me in the IMAX sound

One detail I really loved from the miniseries, is the way the Baron will rub his temple, and then we see Paul do the same thing. Showing a familial connection beyond just the verbal revolution.

One of the reasons the novel has remained popular is the richly detailed and intricate world-building. We learn more about the Dune universe in the first hour of the mini-series than we do in over two and a half hours of the 2021 film.

I was introduced to Dune through this miniseries, so it will always have a special place in my heart!

I actually got a better understanding of Dune as a whole when I watched this the first time a few years ago while reading the book.

An intriguing review. I now have this series on disk but haven't had the chance to watch it yet. Looking forward to it...

Be sure to watch the Children of Dune miniseries, too. I like it more than the Dune miniseries. Both were so much better than the Lynch version, imho. Can't wait for Dune 2021!

excellent vid, pretty much agree with every thing you say , they did an amazing job on this, i was not a fan of the digital sets but fully understand that was because of budget restraints. costumes were amazing .

It was really good for the money that was there 100%. Brilliant for the time.

The mini-series had the fortune of time (4-1/2 hours) which allowed it to be more true to the novel, but as you rightly noted, the pacing was suspect. Where the mini-series deviated greatly was making Princess Irulan a main character, which was a huge deviation and quite a surprise for me, but a pleasant one. Julie Cox was terrific in the greatly expanded role (to me the best of the entire cast). What I didn't care for was the costume design. While some costuming was interesting (as were some of the sets), much of the costuming was horrid ... a joke ... and looked ridiculous. Whoever the costume designer was, never read the novel. Just a couple cases in point (there are so many), Thufir Hawat's costumes and of course the hilarious costuming of the dreaded Saudakor. I was ROTFL when I saw their costumes. They looked like ballet dancers. As you rightly noted, Children of Dune was a much better film, plus Alec Newman's acting chops grew in the role of an older Paul Atreides / Maud'Dib. Again, they made Princess Irulan much more of a sympathetic character than that of the novel (where she was part of the conspiracy against Paul). But strangely enough, it works. Thank you for the review. I Always look forward to your content.

i agree, Julie Cox was really great as Irulan, and totally agree, costuming was weird.

I agree on the costume thought the mother's order weird like her long hair wig, but I get it. Each version gives is a different prespective. Room for everyone who dies it well enough.

Having just watched the 2021 adaptation while having 2000 fresh in my mind from watching it when the 2021 trailer dropped, I think 2000 has better character development and gives you more reasons to care about Paul, House Atreides and the intricacies of the relationships. 2021 glosses over the lore and world building in favor of spectacular but long drawn out visuals to give the effect of how grand it all is. Having watched previous incarnations and playing the CCG in the 90s I knew a lot about the lore but when my GF was watching she had trouble keeping up and keeping an interest. I think there's an argument for poor storytelling in 2021 and expecting the viewer to keep up with the clunky exposition. 2021 didn't fully explain that Jessica was a concubine and not a wife. It didn't really give you an idea that an Emperor really existed except for a couple of lines of dialogue. It didn't give you the idea that house Atreidis suspected that getting control of Arrakis could be a set up. The failed assassination of Paul was poorly explained. The second half of the movie is where it redeems itself and becomes more emotional and interesting. However the movie just sort of ends. Paul has his knife fight with the Fremen to gain their trust but there's no sense of levity for a movie ending. I understand that Paul is supposed to be super-skilled but it doesn't make for an exciting ending to a movie. Even more emotional levity coming from Paul having killed someone for the first time would have been made the scene a bit stronger but I felt barely anything coming from him. Anyway that's my rant.

I completely disagree as a first time watcher of dune i thought the 2021 adaptation was a masterclass and one of the best movies i've seen in years, the way they intentionally leave out certain parts like talking about the emperor but never showing him and giving you pieces of the puzzle for you to put together yourself to form a picture of the world and how it functions, it created a mystery and questions that they would then give you the pieces to. My best guess is that the universe and lore is so huge that if they attempted to explain and show it, it would inevitably fall short and feel cheap like short cuts had to be taken so they went a different root instead.

@@svenolle690 yeah I agree. Also, Dune 2021 is only half of the book, of course characters haven't been developed.
@tomm7505 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree with all of your points. Also, the 2021 film omits the dinner banquet scene completely. That's a big fail in my opinion.
@plo61711 ай бұрын
@@kellyzhou9971Many of the plot threads that were in the first half of the book weren't properly conveyed in the film. Things like the fact that the Atreides knew that there was a traitor in their midst. The fact that the evidence lead to it possibly being Lady Jessica, which was put there to throw Leto off the scent of the actual traitor in Dr. Yeuh. Not showcasing space travel in any real meaningful way, even though that is a huge aspect of what's at stake later on. I would've loved a scene showing many of the different uses of the spice melange throughout the Impirium. Perhaps that still can/will be done in the 2nd film.

It's an interesting take on a show I've seen once many years ago and I think you've at least managed to encourage me to rewatch it before Villeneuve's version comes out. Unlike you I didn't enjoy the costume and set design of the miniseries. There's not much good you can say about Lynch's Dune but whatever crimes they committed on the source material, special effects and casting, they pretty much nailed it when it came to sets and costumes, in particular the Fremen and Bene Gesserit. Guild navigators looked like maggots with vagina mouth but, hey, that's how I pictured them :) Whereas in the series, all the costumes seemed like some weird crossover between Robin Hood and Xena the Warrior Princess with traces of Mortal Kombat to spice things up. Still loved your video, though, and hope for more Dune-related content

I read the books years before ever seeing any of the movies. As much as I liked the first Dune. The mini series was better. I’m excited to see Dune 2021. On a chick note; I can’t wait to see Jason Momoa as Dunkin Idaho. Long live the Duke!

Dune 2000 Miniseries is just outright better than both the other Dune movies. Dune 2000 was pretty damn close to the books. Paul's casting was pretty good because his acting was pretty good. The new movie's Paul I hate so much. Not to mention the new Dune movie's race swapping makes no sense.
@tomm7505 Жыл бұрын
The gender swapping of Liet Kynes is just totally wrong.
