I think including the bagpipes was a stroke of genius on the part of Hans Zimmer (and on that basis alone he has more than deserved the Oscar!!!). In the Dune novels it is hinted at that Old Earth, where humanity came from, is long forgotten - and I always saw the bagpipes as a reminder of that former time on Earth, a reminder of the old times. This music on the whole is simply so evocative; I remember I heard the first few tunes from this before I ever saw the movie, and I had a vague idea already what kinds of scenes they might be used in.
@stevetheduck14258 ай бұрын
Earth is remembered, even mentioned in the book, but it's not a place that anyone has any time for in Dune.

I know that this comment is almost a year old, I just have to share this: Earth is actually known about and remembered in the Dune universe. In fact, the Atreides can trace their lineage back to *ancient Rome.* Earth's just not that important anymore. Yes, it's humanity's original homeworld, but the center of human civilization hasn't been anywhere near it for many thousands of years.

@@camerapasteurize7215 I hate to say it, but the Atreides go back even further than ancient Rome; as their name says, they are the line of Atreus, the king of Mycenae in ancient Greece, and father of Agamemnon who died when returning home after the Troian War, and of Menelaos who was married to Helen. As a reader of the book back in the 1970s, some of the words had to be changed for the movie ('jihad' became 'crusade' for example), due to their political meaning, but, yes. A very good adaptation of about one third of the book. Nothing about Count Fenring and his wife Margot, who parallel Leto and Jessica, nothing about the many other groups and cities on Arrakis, nothing about the way the Sardaukar were trained, replaced with throat singing and human sacrifice, but at least it explains why there aren't enough of them to defeat the Fremen, rather than how the Emperor had reduced their budget for decades. Nothing about how the Fremen exist because of religious persecution on many worlds and the Bene Gesserit's need to protect it's sisters if they get stuck on a world. Nothing about quite a bit of it. Hope the second film includes why Paul's delay while Duncan was fighting and the death of Kynes was the turning point for his whole life, and that of his sister and his children.

@davidwuhrer67047 ай бұрын
House Atreides, named for Agamemnon's brother Atreus, claims to be descended directly from that ancient mythical king. They are probably lying, but nobody can prove them wrong, a lot of the records have been lost in the computer era between ten and twenty thousand years before these events take place. The planet Calladan is their fiefdom, a duchy given to House Atreides by Emperor Shaddam VIII of Corrino, whose house usurped the throne centuries ago. The father of the Red Duke, the first Atreides to rule Calladan, was into bull fighting, a tradition that dates to ancient Egypt, and found its way through ancient Greece to modern Spain. That's why the cost of arms of House Atreides sports the bull that killed him. Don't try to reduce the various cultures of the far future to any single one of today, Dune takes place several times further into the future than the oldest written records from the past are old today. The oldest traditions in Dine are syncretic amalgamations of things that won't exist for another ten thousand years. For example: The Fremen of Arrakis are descendents of the Zensunni Wanderers, whereas the dominant religion among the nobility is Orange-Catholicism.

Dune is realistic history set into sci fi. Atreides: Plantagenet Empire of England, Scotland, and France. Padishah Emperor: A mix between the Byzantine Empire and the Latin church in Rome, who both controlled all the politics in Europe and the Middle East. The Sardaukar are a blend of both the Knight Templars and the Byzantine Varangian Guard. Harkonnen: The Norman principality of Sicily and the Norman principality of Albania. The Normans were extremely aggressive and obsessed with conquest. Fremen: The Muslim sultanates of the Holy Land. Time frame: Between 1097AD, the establishment of the first Crusader states, to around 1260, when politics in the Holy Land were shared between Europe and the Islamic states.

So there was a huge revolution to dismantle AI called the Butlerian Jihad and it was banned ever since. Because of this the human colonies lost connection with one another and regressed technologically, but slowly developed talents and abilities that mimicked computers. This continued to develop when they found the drug called Spice Melange on Dune. Because of the difficulty of communication and travel even with the new human abilities, the Empire is ruled in a feudal system.

The interstellar civilisation was put in place using navigational computers in 'ordinary' spaceships. The Thinking machines came much later, the result of people becoming lazy, leading to a dominion of machines over humans. A jihad destroyed the machines, and the development of religion, psychic powers and secret languages and dogma (very 1960s SF), led to the present equilibrium, which is about to be overthrown by another jihad; this is considered inevitable, in a society that has forgotten how to be one whole humanity.
@davidwuhrer67047 ай бұрын
It is an underlying theme of Dune that humans have continued to develop their abilities for tens of thousands of years, to the point that some of them are practically different species. The mental and physical capabilities of some of the most privileged humans seem nothing short of magical. Some can predict the future with eerie precision, for example. Others can control every aspect of their body to the point of shapeshifting. And then there is The Voice. And those are the more mundane capabilities. Technological progress has also been made in some areas, but the fatwa on any kind of thinking machine (which includes Turing-complete computers of course, and any and every type of machine learning, but also pocket calculators, and possibly abacuses and astrolabs, but apparently not differential analysers or viable systems; weather satellites are explicitly allowed, if barely, and so are simple robots/androids/animatronics, but interstellar travel has to be done using human precognition. The planet IX has a monopoly on electronics, and the Bene Tleilax seem to have a monopoly on genetic engineering, but maybe only on human genetic engineering; the Bene Gesserit are operating a eugenics programme instead (to create the Nietzschean superman, but they don't call it that, Nietzsche has been lost to history). These restrictions have encouraged to develop innate human capabilities to their fullest. Mentats for example are people with special training involving special drugs to become human computers (which are not like the women who did the computations and calculations needed by mathematicians and accountants from since ancient times to the mid 20th century, but instead highly regarded specialists, more comparable to ancient scribes). Other specialists are the Spacing Guild, which holds the absolute monopoly on all space travel, but which cannot exist without the spice Melange, and many of whom cannot survive in gravity.

Fitting instrument for the most badass and powerfull warriors in the landsrat. The emperor fears them for a reason. Every duke of the atreides could have EASILY taken over the empire. They didnt. Their feud against harkonnen? If the landsrat would actualy ALLOW a total war it would be over withing DAY'S! 0:32 ATREIDES , WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?
