A massive disappointment. At least the first movie was decent. The second was a mess.

I enjoyed the movies. But diverging from MAJOR plot points and the absolute barebones sets and costumes and world design is …..well. Disappointing. Herbert himself described the settings of the houses and the emperor as supremely lavish places. Instead all we get is the colors brown, black, and white.
@pseudonymousbeing987
@pseudonymousbeing987 20 күн бұрын
Herbert actually didn't do that at all. Paul's palace is supremely grand and imposing, but highfalutin baroque detail that so many fans imagine is not actually described in the books. That idea stems from some book covers, David Lynch's approach, and Jorodowsky's approach. Meanwhile the fact is Frank Herbert himself said "only one man ever visited Arrakis. John Schoenherr". Look up his art and realise Denis' Dune is quite literally directly working in that aesthetic world. He even replicated some of the paintings in his frames. Frank Herbert barely ever describes anything physical in the books. Architectural detail, colour, any mise en scen is largely absent. It provokes this feeling of minimalism, which is exactly what Schoenherr evoked. Dune is timeless.

@@pseudonymousbeing987 you just wrecked me to be honest. But the thing is is the books describe their lavish meals and since they are all nobility, one would assume that they had rich furnishings.

@@stephensmith4025 Absolutely. I think that's actually the point. The reader is meant to be able to imagine whatever they want. Herbert is veryy careful to ensure his world is as I said, timeless. He avoids many pitfalls of his peers that date their work. As a result his technology and society remain entirely plausible to us now. He leans deeply into analogue tech and gives in world reasons why modern and future technology are absent. One of my favourite interpretations is that Dune is a largely stagnant world, fashion doesn't change, neither does technology. So they rely on kit that stands the test of time, that's solid metal, wires, buttons, and dials, as opposed to digital which seems to encourage constant change and replacement. The architectural and fashion design is similarly timeless. Not in any way particularly 60s esque. All this means that the reader is free to see it as they see fit. I love the baroque interpretations, they're very beautiful, and they do make sense. A feudal society steeped in archaic tradition is totally associated with such aesthetics. But I like Denis Dune because it evokes the same feeling of starkness as the book gave me. Most frames place the human being in contrast with a cold and cruel world. Arrakeen, Caladan, Arrakis, they're all so brutal and geometric and gargantuan. It's beautiful to me. Throwing curtains and plush all over it would blend the human in with their surroundings, which is something Denis wanted to avoid I think. He once said something about wanting to just focus in on the human figure and face placed against stark canvasses that only serve to emphasise the human, not the place. Because Dune is about deeply deeply exploring humans and their inner humanity. Naught else.

The second movie failed to introduce new fans to the wider universe of Dune. Sardukar didn’t feel like a threat. Their fighting scenes were not intense nor long fought. The great houses and the spacing guild should have been present during the duel 🤺 I could go on 😂

I remember, back in the 1900s, you could tell a story and people would be like "cool story", and then get on with their lives instead of demanding a perpetual franchise based on it.

If they stuck to Dune Messiah pretty closely there is quite a bit of weird in there. I'm sure it will be pretty but I don't have a lot of hope. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't any Tleilaxu. How do you frontload a ton of that stuff in a third movie?

Yeah the ending of Part 2 didn’t really work for me as it was the Guild that confirmed that Paul would have gone through with his threat to destroy the Spice. The Imperium is supposed to rest on a sort of political tripod - the Congress of Great Houses, the Guild, and the Sisterhood
@richlisola1
@richlisola1 21 күн бұрын
Totally. Also, why would Paul wed Irulan if the Great Houses rejected his ascension? Why spare Shaddam? Makes no sense. It shows Paul’s political gamble failing, thus calling into question his prescient foresight. And the Houses of The Landsraad and the Spacing Guild would not risk spice production by disregarding Paul’s threat to nuke the spice fields.

Dummy Villaneuve can’t build the world becuase he doesn’t understand it. If those first 2 movies show anything, they show he doesn’t grasp the intricate nature of the Dune universe. He a great visual director but he’s shown time and time again he is out of his intellectual depth when it comes to science ficiton.

My only wish is for Villeneuve to leave Dune alone. He has ruined the story and the characters. Too much praise was heaped on him for Dune 1 and the man decided to make a Villeneuve story and not a Dune one. it will probably take decades for another director to try his hands at a faithful adaptation. Thanks for nothing, Denis.

He made me want to read the book, so I think it’s a win in a sense. Just keep in mind your vision of the novel still exist, and both interpretation can blossom. After reading the book, I watched Lynch’s version and I think both director failed but on different levels : The pacing in 1984’s version is completly laughable. While Denis’ version looses the introspective/spiritual aspect of the story, on which all the stakes later flow. In both cases, I tried picturing a film where there would have been more faithful… but I don’t think it would do a great movie.
