My favorite thing here is that Jamis did in fact, show him the ways of the desert. Paul interprets the vision as kindness, because that is how the Atreides see things, though the lesson was not kind.

Exactly, but not only that, I think Paul's foreseeing power in general works in more of a symbolical sense. Jamis is just one example, like Chani stabbing Paul in his vision with the very crysknife she later offers him to fight with.

I took it like; it was a version that was supposed to happen. Paul sees Jamis when they're getting ready to ride his first worm and Paul ends up being good by being good friends with Jamis. But the version we got leads to the jihad.

Also I think there's an element in the visions that Paul and everyone are mere parts of a greater whole..the tribe's survival was what matters eg if Paul had been stabbed it would've served the rule they lived by and so was just, if Jamis had been a friend or killed Paul both seemed right.. but Paul was the fulcrum, he was always in between two polar paths, it was always up to him to choose, but he was full of typical teenage angst and immaturity (in nice way!)

@@luistenma85 I agree, but Paul and the more symbolic side could be coz he hasn't yet taken the Water of Life, his visions are symbols or fragments at the moment..in Part Two his eyes may be opened and it might look differently..in Dune Messiah when he's blinded he sees the men around him with great clarity not just symbolically but in near pristine awe-inspiring way

When Jamis is speaking to Paul, he oozes wisdom and kindness. You can see it in his eyes and the way he slightly smiles that he has a deep affection for Paul. That's why his death, and the door shutting on that alternate path, is so painful. The actor did an excellent job with his small amount of screentime.

I think the moment the future changed was when Paul disarmed Jamis in the canyon scuffle. If Janis hadn't been personally humiliated he might not have invoked the amtal rule. It feels like a metaphor for the choices Paul makes. He wants to avoid jihad, but he won't do anything to compromise on the safety of himself or his loved ones, and so he can't. The future in which Jamis is a friend is the one where he doesn't try and protect his mother, and that's not Paul.

@@darksidedearth5824 No. It shows him the way to HIS manhood. But seeing as you started this, I will finish it. The entire message of this novel/movie is ani-Christian. Think about it. Jesus Christ came to be our savior by giving HIS life. Never by taking life. Paul Atredies advances further along to becoming the messiah by taking a life. And then lives (plural) . Total opposite of the message of Christ. And the message of who our REAL SAVIOR is. Hollyweird is founded by satanists. Holyweird was established to further lucifer's message and delude people. Spend time in the word of God ... the Holy Bible. With time .... You. Will. See. Amazing the time people WASTE thinking about the tripe of life. I was so confused in the movie, and assumed (after, jokingly, telling myself that I shouldn't be low-key racist in confusing two dark skinned Black actors who "obviously " must be different characters) that this scene would be for a guy first appearing in Dune 2. It's an interesting concept. Someone who, in one reality, could've been a close friend, companion, and ally. But it turns out in Paul's reality he had to be an enemy in order for Paul's story to continue. Kind of like real life. Many of the people we think of as "enemies" are likely good people who we could've grown to love were our reality a little differently arranged.

Exactly what happens in this vision happens at the end. People say his visions can't be trusted. I think people aren't paying attention. The whole vision is about coming of age, and it's through dueling Jamis he does so. Old Paul died with Jamis. Chani who stabbed him in the vision gave him the knife. Although he doesn't get stabbed it's through her knife that Paul's innocence dies. So Paul "did go" with Jamis. The visions aren't important, their message is.

Actually they are visions. Spice using opening and giving to peoples parts of future timeline but only some genes can using that feature. Paul was the plan of bene gesserit so he can use that feature and his son god emperor leto used too. Youre right giving message point but these pics is visions. But future timelines could be changed after you saw it. When paul disarmed jamis jamis interpret that so personel and he want revenge thats why he invoke the amtal. If paul wasnt disarmed jamis paul visions about jamis may come true. Paul see the future before disarmed jamis after that move future changed. This pattern in the all series. Future could seen by someones who can able to do that but future could change either.

The wide shots of the dunes may seem like just a chance to show off the camera work. But I think it’s more to do with the fact that this desolate land is alive in its own way. The fremen know that and since they live and depend on that land, their connection to it is strong. The wide shot is so that we can see Paul is about to get a crash course in this land and form his own connection to it. Love it.

The shot of the little muad'dib and the line "Don't be frightened. Even a little desert mouse can survive" shifting from this unknown omnious voice to Chani's sweet voice is such a tender little moment. I think about it a lot. Its part of Dune lore that Paul (and eventually his descendants) have the power of 'prescience', aka a type of premonition of the possible futures that lay ahead. This power is enhanced by spice. Spice itself is necessary for interstellar journeys as ship navigators need spice to properly travel with the wormholes in order to avoid 'gravity anomalies' that would otherwise destroy the ships mid journey. These navigators are humans who completely immerse themselves in spice to get prescience abilities to see the possible paths ahead and choose the one which lets the ship survive the journey. So this is probably just Paul seeing a possible future where he doesnt kill Jamis. Interestingly even though it didnt happen, he still seems to have learned a thing or two from the Jamis version of the future that he didnt kill

Since this is after Paul got a ton of spice and had his prescient view expanded, I believe this is Paul actually "remembering" the past. In the books it explores how, after Paul's mind/power was unlocked by the spice he starts to perceive time non-linearly, seeing both memories of the past that aren't his and visions of the future that may or may not come to be. It's also why he sees Jamus telling Paul that he will show Paul the way of the desert despite Paul later killing Jamus shortly after meeting him; he's seeing a potential future (which doesn't come to be) where Jamus instead accepts Paul and becomes his teacher, rather than Stilgar, who actually becomes Paul's teacher. Him seeing Duncan Idaho with the Fremen could also be interpreted as him imagining Duncan after previously hearing Duncan talk about his time with the Fremen, but it's juxtaposition of his future memory of Jamus makes me think this is him physically seeing it as his mind dips between past and future. It's also I believe why Paul says later in this scene "the siech where Duncan stayed is off in that direction"; it doesn't make sense he would know the direction of the siech from Duncan's stories (how would Duncan have given him such precise coordinates?), but it does make sense if he remembers the location from his visions. Sounds odd but this weird perception of time and Paul's ability to get information from it is really heavily explored in the books.

It's like trying to walk barefoot over asphalt or concrete; on an average day it's fine, but trying to do it in the middle of summer after the sun's been beating down on you all day is not a good idea

I did something very similar. I met a woman who wasn’t used to the ways of my people. I took her by the hand and told her “I will show you the ways of the dessert”. Now she’s fat like my people.

so just from what i've picked up before i read the books (coming tomorrow lol) Paul can essentially see the future but it is many futures all at once and sometimes even the past i think (as he sees his vision of Duncan from earlier) but anyway, his visions are not always the future that he chooses. So at this point in the movie there is a possible future where Jamis becomes Paul's friend and shows him the ways of the desert and trains him as a Fremen. But later in the movie after Paul actually meets Jamis, Jamis chooses to fight Paul. So, before Paul fights Jamis he has a vision where he sees himself get killed by Jamis because that is only 1 of the 2 possible futures left once the fight begins (one where Paul dies or one where Jamis dies) and of course Paul kills him and is instead "trained in the ways of the desert" by killing Jamis and being initiated into the Fremen. or i could be wrong lmao

He actually did show him the ways of the desert... Paul was a friend of Jamis, but he got to sacrifice that posible future, all because the desert does not care at all, the desert takes the weak, that's the way.
