At 48 years old I’m old enough to remember and have enjoyed Dune many different ways. The original 1984 film was definitely a pillar in my love of sci-fi and it caused me to read the books when I got a little older. These new films have not disappointed and I’m thrilled a third movie is being made. Dune part two is the only film I’ve seen in a theater so far this year, so much of Hollywood is a mess but Villeneuve is doing something special.

I just imagine working under Denis. He seems to have such an intelligent and deeply loving demeanor. I also love what they did with Chani. She had a LOT of depth, and the conflict was very powerful. Throughout the movie there were moments when I be watching Paul but basically seeing text saying "Chani did not like this. -1". (After the "Stilgar loves this. +2") I wish we had more time to see Austin Butler in action. He really stole his scenes, even beside a major scene-stealing veteran like Stellan. Honestly, I felt a little bad for Dave Bautista, because I know he's trying to break out of roles where he's the big brute. It's also EXTREMELY impressive how they pulled off the tone progression. They did a great job of power scaling Paul, and having you root for him and cheer for his success, while simultaneously building a knot in your gut from the tragic nature of it. You can simultaneously feel his ascent and his descent.

Oh I hope they will bring ALL the DUNE books (also the multiple ones from his son) to cinema. Each one of them is worth it. This epos is truly the largest story ever written.
