“There’s no mystery about a human life. It’s not a problem to be solved, but a reality to experience.” is actually a quote from the 3rd Dune book, Children of Dune. Currently reading through it and when I came across it I remembered this being said in the Denis film. Cool to see things being pulled from future books!

I like how the Dune spiritually and philosophically analyses the concept of free will and FATE. It is more like a grey area. Where your past and environment shapes you, you still have a choice between events. But usually in the first movie all of his visions were from the future. So in Dune universe, i think fate is something inevitable, that is always ''coming at you'' but if you fear your fate and lose faith, you will ''die''' So you must not fear what life throws at you and be courageous. ''I must not fear, fear is the mind killer.'' That's the ultimate message and theme there. Thats why this quote exist: ''The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. A process that cannot be understood by stopping it. We must move with the flow of the process. We must join it. We must flow with it.''

There's a very cool school of thought in eastern philosophy called Daoism that talks about this exact concept. Basically, it's a natural acceptance that all of existence is arbitrary and mysterious. It believes that the universe has a natural flow to it and rather than fighting this natural order of things we should learn to accept and "go with the flow" which is called "Wei wu wei", the art of doing not doing. You can read this in a book called "Dao De Jing" which talks about the applications of this concept. Its a very good read.

Jon Vervaeke touches on this topic in his lecture series ‘The Meaning Crisis’-he talks about how western thinking has lost its capacity in what he calls “participatory knowing” which is knowledge/wisdom that can only be acquired experientially (vs deduction/analysis/verbal affirmation, etc). It’s one of the reasons that westerners are constantly seeking spirituality through eastern practices that preserved participatory knowing over thousands of years.

Jessica was trained all her life as Bene Gesserit, and then as a Ducal lady... she was reserved, did not show her feelings, and trained to do combat and a hundred other skills dealing with martial arts, danger and meditation towards controlling fear... She had different modes that she could go into, controlling her own body and biology even, like controlling own body temperature, she could switch into "berserker" mode when faced with a superior fighting force, as opposed to her already supposedly terrifying fightin abilities..... I do not understand Rebecca Fergusons interpretation where she seems always emotional and stressed out. Her behavior, seems exactly the opposite of Jessica's training and physical abilities. she seems out of shape when they are climbing the dunes, and she should be as fit as Paul. I remember her in Mission Impossible 5, where she behaved more like a "Jessica" , calm and always in control. there are some impressive performances in this film, and it's the one that i cannot figure out... was reading the book required for all actors ?

Personally, I liked her take on the character more. Reserved feelings work nicer in a book, but in visual media, expressive feelings work nicer. Also she often only shows this side of her when she's alone, or with those who are close to her (The Duke, or Paul). It's good to be able to see her emotions.

As someone who's never read the books, if you're worried that Jessica came across as weak-willed or overly emotional you are wrong. Her emotions made her feel more "real", more human, they didn't diminish her strength at all but enhanced it. Yes we see her stress out when her son's life is hanging by a thread, is that strange? When both their lives are in danger and she can't do anything but hope, we see her afraid, is that strange? But when she used the Voice on those Harkonen soldiers we see a look of pure cold contempt on her face. When she's fighting the Fremen alongside Paul we see her as a headstrong and capable fighter and negotiator. Her moments of vulnerability allowed her strengths to shine brighter. If she was an unfeeling statue "always in control" I wouldn't be as interested in her or as impressed by her strengths
@KS-xk2so
@KS-xk2so Жыл бұрын
I didn't get this feeling from her character at all.... she seemed rather controlled and reserved to me, at least in public. The whole point of seeing her emotional in private moments, like during Paul's test, is to then provide the contrast for her more public persona of control. Movies are a different medium, more show than tell. Books are easier to convey stuff like that in because you have access to a characters inner monologue. Her character seemed very focused as well.... seconds after escaping death for her son and rape then death for her, she takes time to focus on correcting Paul's pitch with the Voice, rather than be emotional or stressed. As far as being out of shape.... she looks very in shape in that still suit, and I didn't notice her struggling at all next to Paul, except for the fact that she's smaller than him... she also didn't look out of shape when she kicked Stillgar's ass in like 3 seconds. Not sure where you're coming from at all here.

Realistically, the vehicle engine would be in bigger trouble in the storm than the missiles. Also, in reality missiles are too fast to chase anything. They will either hit, or miss. There's no chase and they don't turn around and come back after missing once. Also realistically, considering the aerodynamics of the vehicle, folding the wings would make it fall almost straight down.
@GrayCatbird1
@GrayCatbird1 2 жыл бұрын
I know chasing missiles is a very common trope in action movies, but at least in this case, it can be excused by it's a sci-fi setting and these aren't real missiles. Regarding the vehicule in the storm, while its durability is indeed exceptional, wouldn't it be possible for it to stay aloft if the wings are exceptionally strong?
@SmartassX1
@SmartassX1 2 жыл бұрын
@@GrayCatbird1 It's not about how strong the wings are. It's that when the wings are folded back, they are all behind the vehicles center of mass. The center of mass can logically be assumed to be where the wings attach to the vehicles body. This is why it would go down nose first. Similarly to how old bombs are sort of roundish and have wings at the back to point them the right way while falling. But I guess the idea was that the wings were meant to be moved to different angles, so that the whole vehicle would spin while falling. This is how some plant seeds fall slowly with a sort of single wing attached to the seed, but the difference here is that the plant seed it's meant to resemble has only maybe 50%, or less mass in the seed and the rest in the wing, a helicopter-like vehicle would have 85+% in the engine and cabin the rest in the wings, so it would still fall quite steeply, rather than in slow and safe spin. But whatever, It's a work of fiction. I was just criticizing the fact that air intakes on engines need to not be taking in sand, because turbine engines can not handle that. Rocket engines (on the missiles) don't care about that and are fast enough to ignore the storm winds.
@NavidIsANoob
@NavidIsANoob 2 жыл бұрын

After the events of the 'Butlerian Jihad' in which humanity was almost destroyed by a catastrophic war against AIs, the cvillisation in Dune is obsessively opposed to use of any kind of advanced computer technology. Hence the use of 'mentats' i.e. humans trained to act as living computers. This is also why they need spice, without computers the only way to successfully navigate a faster than light starship is to use the future vision the spice grants to predict the right path. I'm guessing they still use more simplistic computers, maybe sort of late 1970s level technology. If you look at a photo of the cockpit of something like a F-14 it's pretty similar to what's in this clip.

The mystery of life is not a problem to be solved but a reality to experience because God is the mystery of my life. A process that cannot be understood by stopping it. We must move with the flow of the process. We must join it. We must flow with it. If neanderthals have no soul then those with neanderthal dna have no soul and are not human anymore.

even looking into how DNA is replicated/translated/modified and passed on, it feels like it keeps with the them of a flow in life. It can’t be solved by stopping it. we must move with the flow of the process
