DUNE (PC/DOS) 1992, Cryo, Virgin Games, PC-CD (Part-1)

One first ever 3 PC games to occupy our then luxurious 850MB HDD back in '95. Other two were Lion King and Goblins 3, all of them quite the jump from ZX Spectrum games I got used to since around '87. Another 10 years shall pass until I was mature enough to actually finish and appreciate the totality of Dune. It was an awesome experience even after over a dozen years since its release and still is for those rare few still willing to patiently adjust to how things were done in the olden times. Also to my ears soundtrack sounds much better on OPL2/3 chip that the indented Roland system, which is rather unique. Highly recommend, especially to those who missed it back then. CD version should have PDF Manual included to get you started, as I seen many get stuck on immersive saving procedure.

I used to have a 180 or 280 meg drive on my 486 SX 33.... My previous XT had a 10 meg drive , can you believe that man. Just ridiculous

Thanks! The sounds of amiga DUNE OST were digitalized directly from the "Dune Spice Opera" album, that's why they are so special compared to the PC version! Unfortunately, such goos samples were memory consuming, enablib only 3 tracks... The 2024 release remastered digital album in Hi-Res Audio 96/24 is now available, with expanded stereo, spectrally enhanced sounds and powerful dynamics. It is kindof extended amiga OST in an unveiled quality, as with the full multiversion Soundtrack with bonus songs, 22 tracks total!

Legendary movie! The game seemed to be well inspired to really capsulate the feel of the movie. Bonus for the vast and excellent soundscape. Devs must have loved to do this masterpiece. 10/10

I love this game so much. From an earlier time when developers were still experimenting and every strategy game wasn't a C&C clone. A few of us from the Upper Memory Block podcast got into speedrunning this, Eleima managed a completion in 50 game days. There's a KZbin playthrough which does it in about 25 game days! There is a soundtrack CD to this game called Dune: Spice Opera. The copyright holder won't give composer Stephane Picq the rights to sell his own music so it's very rare. I am lucky enough to have a real CD of it. You can find MP3 and FLAC versions of it easily though.

Got this for my Amiga500. Absolutely loved this game and Stephane Picq's music for it. I eventually bought the special CD edition for PC with the Exxos Spice Opera music CD. Wonderful adventure by all accounts. I highly recommend heading over to the Digital Antiquarian blog and reading about the company Cryo and how this game came to be. Very interesting and entertaining.

Me too though it pissed me off because i had to get the disk versions and experience so many bad sectors and then wait for friend to copy games, it was a pain. Then i would also get stupid codes during the games.... the CD versions didnt have this.

Wow, more than 20 years later I finally realized this game was not made by Westwood. But the graphics is no less beautiful as Dune 2.

I'd say it holds up better than Dune2, graphics wise. Gameplay wise too - I don't think there's any game that's quite blended together adventure, economic, and strategy elements as well as this game did/does.

I need to ask this because it has bugged me for many years..... Did anyone else used to get a game breaking graphics glitch where the screen would just flash with broken graphics and you would be unable to play? I had the floppy disc version of Dune on the Amiga 600 and I never got to finish the game. I must have returned the game 4 or 5 times and it happened on every single copy, but it was the only game that it ever did it with on my Amiga. I also tried the game on my friend's Amiga 500 Plus and it did the same, but I've never found anyone else who ever had the same problem as me.

As far as I know both AMiga 500+ and 600 came with Workbench 2.* rom, and some games had issues with that, my cousin had an Amiga 600 with a witch that enabled him to change to Workbench 1.* if the game didn´t load but that was normally on boot, not in a advanced stage. When you get visions of harvesters being eaten, how do you prevent this? thanks!

Necroing this because I can. I don't think this could be stopped after you are notified. However if you gave the fremen at a sietch access to an Orni then they would spot wormsign. Instead of warning you that the harvester was about to be eaten they would instead say they were able to lift the harvester out in time to be saved 🙂
