The writer of Dune picked out the name 'Härkönen' from a California phonebook because he thought the name sounded harsh and 'Soviet'. Of course he changed it to 'Harkonnen'. I wonder if anyone ever told him Härkönen is a Finnish surname that basically means small bull. Fun fact, right now there are many Finnish women called Tuula Härkönen living in the harsh and snowy country of Finland 😆 Loving your reactions to this amazing show so far. Re: animals Dune is set in the real universe. Everyone originates from Earth. There are no alien creatures, except potentially the sandworm, but even that might just be evolution of something from Earth.

The fact that the sisters have a secret thinking machine is fascinating. It seems to me that Mother Raquela fought the machines but then realized she needed at least one to assist with human evolution? But can't tell anyone in the sisterhood because its forbidden? Which sisters know/knew? And yes I think Lia is the one born twice. She is going to wake up with all the information from Dorothea.

Dorothea saying in the episode "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind" made me feel at that time she thought something was going on behind the scenes but wasn't certain. In the Dune movies, it's briefly touched upon the idea of Abomination with Jessica being pregnant and Lia might be the first Bene Gesserit to experience the Abomination concept. The born twice prophecy might be a red herring for her character. This series is doing a pretty decent job showing how prophecy isn't clear and could easily be interpreted wrong. The one born twice could be Paul Atreides or any number of Dune characters.

At one point in the episode Dorotea reads out loud, as to make a point, "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind." which is one of the commandments written in their Orange Catholic Bible

The Bene Gesserit (at least in the 6 Dune books) are pretty much the human embodiment of 'Thinking Machines' so them having a fancy shmancy tech cave seems entirely on brand.

So the reason why the Sisters don't do the Agony until they're older is because the power of the past lies can overwhelm you if your personality is not developed enough. This is why spice is dangerous to kids before birth which is a thing later on in the books, though we see some of it in Dune 2 you might remember.

I'm pretty sure the genetic archive is maintained by the thinking machine and that's what Dorothea was going to destroy. Also, it looks like Lila is about to be born again thanks to the spice, so Desmond may be a red herring.

Desmond seems like a massive red herring. Spice/Shai Halud dont just give people psychic microwave powers. So unless these writers are just making up a bunch of extra nonsense about how spice works, Desmond is probably the work of some other faction (remnant AI probably)

My theory: Desmond is an android .. let over from the war who has been repurposed to serve someone trying to gain control over the Imperium. That;s how he can resist the voice and do what he did to the Boy and Kasha. The story he provided of being eaten by the worm is just a smoke screen.

About Desmond I believe his ability is nerve related technology, something akin to the box of pain shown in the movies. If you see the burning scene from this point of view, you can see how the artists used it as a point of start for the animation. Overstimulated nerves burning people from the inside. Therefore, he could control his own nerves, he countered the voice by paralising his nerves.

Feel like this episode would have served so much better as one of the first 2. Setting up the rivalry of the reverend mother's like this would have made the murder shown at the beginning of episode 1 hit home so much more. I get they're trying to go with some reveal type thing with this but not sure it'll pay off like it could have.

Also, once again, if The Voice was portrayed more accurately, I feel like all of these scenes would be so much more powerful. The scene with Valya and her family was a perfect opportunity. Imagine if Valya had said exactly all the things that would drive her mother to almost use the knife, just by using family baggage and emotional manipulation. Instead we have her doing demonic screeching as everyone else in the room is freaking out....

The point you bring up is why many science fiction series struggle out of the gates. There's just so much stuff to set up so the viewer understands the universe. Many Star Trek series, for example, struggle with this problem.

it's pretty wild to me that we're halfway through the season and only just now filling in backstory about the main characters, when it's already been setting up a dozen plots that it doesn't get into yet.. There's no way this season ends with any kind of satisfying progression of an arc.. I just expect them to deal with Desmond and then have Valya turn to the audience and go "we need to breed our own guy, but one we can control...idk, some kind of... Kwisatz Haderach"

This whole series just reinforces my belief that royal and noble families should never be put in power. All they care about are getting their families on top and dominating or destroying their rivals. And in the end, it’s us, those with not a drop of “royalty” in our blood or our names, who end up getting crushed under that ever spinning wheel of rising and falling noble families.

Yes earth was a place in the Dune universe in the far past. The Sisters remember what happened to it directly through other memory.

There's still a lot of things in the Dune universe like religion and languages that have deep connection with Earth; the basis of the Orange Catholic Bible being one of them. In that text there seems to be a mixture of some of the old Earth religions but not a lot is explored on it within the Dune books.

"Because I'm not familiar with Dune stuff" - don't worry, Dune fans have no idea what this show is doing either 🤣 At this point it's pretty clear that this show is more interested in the prequel novels written by the original author's son, because this episode was pretty much adapting the backstory of characters from his Schools trilogy, while namedropping "Vorian Atreides" like some major character. None of any of this is in any of the 6 Dune novels.

Is it just me or has their editing been very different at least the last few months? Large sections of stories are missing and the flow doesn't seem to be there. I still enjoy their reactions but it's just been throwing me off for a while. I can't watch a reaction and still get a sense of the show.

No spoilers but I have not heard good things from others who have seen the first 4 episodes early and I fear they may be right, but we'll see, that last or last 2 episode might be really good.

Feels eerily similar to HOTD S2, tons of build up and story development, but really starting to worry if anything substantial is going to happen here soon. Trying my best to stick with it but 3 episodes of just a lot of talking starts to lose some steam heading into episode 4. Also feels like they have a contractual obligation to include a sex scene every episode. Feels so out of place for me.
