It's a beautiful hike. If you decide to explore the spit ... make sure to consult the tide charts! As implied by the "beat the tide" comment, it's easy to walk the beach at low tide, but significantly more tiresome at high tide, when you're on very loose sand. We always start our hike so that we have a good four hours where the waterline is low enough to be able to walk on the harder packed sand (between high and low tide marks). There's a tide chart and great advice for hiking the spit or just about anything else about the sites/experiences of the Olympic Peninsula at kaleberg.com (a passionate Olympic Peninsula expert).
