If you like Pacific Northwest beaches, here is a nice one for you! At Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, hikers can follow the beach at Dungeness Spit for up to 5.5 miles, going as far as the New Dungeness Lighthouse near the point. It’s a nice out and back along the sandy beach (total 11 miles). There are lots of birds and plenty of driftwood! When Steve and I recently visited we hiked out about 1.5 miles, had a nice picnic, then turned back.
When hiking this beach you have to be very mindful of the tide and stay to the west / outside portion of the spit. The east / inside portion is closed to the public and is protected for wildlife. Also be mindful for waves and logs and other debris in the water. Current tide charts are available online and are posted at the trailhead.
The NWR is on the Olympic Peninsula, along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, close to Sequim, Washington. (Pronounced: skwim)
Hiked on January 13, 2023
3.5 miles, (out and back)
$3.00 parking

Interesting place. I remember it was cold and windy when I visited it, and no birds around 😊 Thanks for the great wildlife encounters 👍

Ah, wow, that’s too bad! I guess we we’re fortunate that it wasn’t too windy the day we were there. I’ll keep that in mind if I go back with my bird book. Did you get to hike out very far? I’m wondering if it was a calm day, would there be more or less birds out farther out the spit? Thanks- always nice to hear from you!

I will forever be able to smell the unique scents of low tide along the shoreline of Juan de Fuca Strait in my mind and dreaming of eating Dungeness crab again . I will also go salmon and halibut fishing when we return to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Thanks Jennifer, for the 10 minutes of bliss and wonderful memories growing up there; as I sit and enjoy watching these Washington State videos that you share from here in Japan.👍

Can't beat it on a dry sunny day! Made it out to the lighthouse years ago and got to go up in it. Timing the tides is critical if you don't want be climbing driftwood on the way back. I know from experience. 😉 Thanks Jennifer!

Hi Philip! Glad to hear you made it out to the Lighthouse and back safely!! I think it’s really best for a summertime adventure when you have more daylight and can get an extra low tide. I wouldn’t want to mess with the waves and water overtopping the spit! The nature opportunities here are amazing! Did you know the spit grows by about 14 feet per year!! 😄🌊🌊🐧🐦

Nice trail. Beautiful country. I love the sound of the ocean. Also noticed the sign which listed the birds in the area, amazing the number of different species. I’m lucky to see 10 varieties in my community. I love all the driftwood. Our world is so amazing and we take it for granted most days. Nothing as calming as a walk in the woods or by the seashore. Hello Jennifer & Steve Beautiful hike up to this quiet beach …so serine ! Sure must be careful to hike along the shore not to get caught by the tide . Hi friends, thank you! We love having driftwood on our beaches! So many trees wash down the rivers then end up on the beaches- it’s left there as part of the natural ecosystem and people aren’t allowed to collect it on the public lands. O yes, we love the birds and wildlife. I’m happy you found it calming. 👌 I really appreciate your visit and thoughtful comments. Have a great upcoming week! 😄 Cheers- Jen

However, the place is so beautiful that you can always come back. The beginning of the hike is a really beautiful forest path. Only when you hear the sound of the sea do you recognize the proximity of the water. The first view of the coast from above is beautiful. The large amount of wood makes the headland very interesting. Nice hike at Dungeness Spit. Beautiful stretch of sand, the sounds of waves and the spooky driftwoods and the birds.. perfect afternoon vibes. Would love to see you hike upto the lighthouse some time in the future on a clear spring or summer day. Have a great week, Jennifer. Take care!

Isn’t it wonderful! I would really like to hike all the way out too! I’ll be watching for when there is a low/low tide near 11:00 in the early spring… that should give me enough time if I start around 8:00! The lighthouse used to be open for tours… I’d love to see inside too, wouldn’t that be a bonus! 😄 Thanks! 🙋🏼‍♀️🌊🌊🌊

Hi Color! Thank you! It’s a really special place, glad you enjoyed it! I’m always amazed at how the forest grows all the way up to the beach… yes, when you walk along and finally reach the beach, it’s amazing! In the summertime it stays light until about 9:30p, so that would be a great time to try to walk all the way out to the lighthouse… the beach closes just before sunset, which is about 5:00p now, so there’s not enough tie to get all the way out and back. Thanks, and have a great week! 🌊🌊🐦🐦

The forests there are so thick with undergrowth... It seems particularly in the lower elevations... I have walked along the beach in CA when the tide was coming in... It seemed quite fast...

Hi Max! Yes, isn’t it amazing how thick the forests are… it feels damp, but refreshing for a winter hike. 🌲🌲💚 The incoming tides can really sneak up on you… and with the driftwood and other debris it’s super important to pay attention along these beaches. We went to the beach in CA when I was younger, but as kids we didn’t have tide charts, we just knew the ocean was going to come up and knock down our sand castles - lol!!

Just got back from there last week staying at Discovery Bay WorldMark didn’t hike the spit but are planning to go back next year with out RV for two weeks during fishing season. Had a high pressure over the PNW, sunny week which was lucky timing it only rained the day before we left. The whole area is beautiful lots to see and do ! Next WA trip planned is Birch Bay!

Sounds great! Glad you had such good weather! Lots of excellent fishing (and hiking). Birch Bay is great too! Lots of beautiful coastal areas in Wa. I hope you get to hike the spit one day- it’s on my wish list- trying to coordinate with a low tide about noon-2:00, and a long summer day. Thanks for watching and saying hi! 😄

Lived in Sequim from 1955-62. Hiked the spit as a teen in 1961, and signed the Coast Guard log book (signature is still there). Hiked it again with my wife in 1994 and then stayed at the lighthouse in 2014. The town has change a LOT since I lived there. It is said "you can never go home." So true.

Fun memories! I love the spit, such an amazing area! I’ve been able to visit just 5-6 times over the years- would love to make it all the way to the lighthouse! O wow, we should see if we could stay there too, that would be amazing! I really want to try the hike all the way out, but I would have to find a mid day low tide in the summer with the most daylight!! Isn’t it true everywhere seems to have grown up and changed, sometimes places are unrecognizable now. Thanks for watching and saying hello! 😄☀️☀️☀️

That split looked amazing to walk on. Almost like walking in the middle of the ocean. But when the tide comes, I think you better run and get out of there! Lots of driftwood and other stuff out there. It must be so great for bird watching! All the best! Kaat
@JenniferLupine

Hi Kaat! Yes, better not get caught out on the spit at high tide! It’s really fun to walk on if the wood is dry and if it’s not getting bounced around by the tide! I slipped on one in December, that wasn’t fun, thankfully I didn’t get hurt. How are you doing after your recent incident with Frodo? Hope no bruises! Take care, all the best ~ J L 🙋🏼‍♀️💙

Hi and thanks! It really is a nice combination of woods and open coast hiking. I’m always impressed how the forest goes right up to the water’s edge around here. Yes, it gets dark these days about 5:00p and in the summertime it gets dark about 9:30p… someday I’ll try to hike all the way out on a long summer day! 😁🌊🌊🐦🐦💙

Hi Jen this looked a beautiful place that you both went to and so nice to hear the surf as you walked through the forest. Loved the wooden viewpoint of the beach. Wondered what was meant by a spit ? We don't have them here. Loved all of the driftwood on the sand and the relaxing sounds of the waves coming until the shore, this would make a great relaxation video :) I can see how it could get dangerous though at high tide . We love walking on the beach in this sort of weather. Great footage and sounds of the birds all together on the sand and that one bird perched on wood ! So beautiful and ac always I really enjoyed this ~ Anna ❤ 👍

Hi Anna! I’m happy that you enjoyed hearing the surf and seeing the views… it really was relaxing to walk along the beach! They call the large C type shape a “spit”…. kind of like a peninsula, but it’s curved and it’s sand, not solid, fixed land. They’re formed by the winds pushing the waves and sand, it doesn’t move straight up though, it works kind of like a Z… the wind pushes the sand up and pushes it further along the beach too… they call it long shore drift. This spit is getting about 14 feet longer every year! Pretty fun to learn about, thanks for asking! 😄🐦🐦🌊🌊💙

Hi Bryan! Isn’t this a cool land feature! I’m really happy that they have it open for public access, it’s a great area for people to enjoy nature. Interestingly, it increases by an average of 14 feet per year. The tall sandy bluffs nearby supply mor sand as they stuff off. I don’t know how many people make it all the way out to the Lighthouse and back…we haven’t tried… it’s probably best to go in the summer when it stays light until 9:30p. Yes, they sure have a lot of bird visitors! 🐦🐦 As for the trees, I’ll try to find a list, but the lower elevation forests in the coastal areas are generally mixed Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Western Hemlock and Spruce. I didn’t look closely this time, but I would guess they had a good mix! Next time I go I’m going to plan Moe sitting and watching time, and I’ll bring some binoculars. 😄

Thank you for uploading this. Used to live in Sequim, but moved away and have not been able to visit since. Miss the area and all of the hiking opportunities. This beings back memories. Hiked the Dungeness Spit quite a few times; canoed along it once and saw seals. The Spit always has driftwood along it, and it's fun to see the little driftwood huts people have made while hiking.
