Love the Dungeon Dudes but just fundamentally disagree with them on the smite change. Thank you Colby for pointing out the conflict between the new Smite with spell and bonus action requirements and countless other ways to weaponize your bonus action and how it conflicts with many other multiclass options. I agree with Monty that not everything should be optimal, but there are too many feat/weapon/multiclass options that aren't minmaxing optimal but just about fulfilling the fantasy of the player at the table and these changes make playing those fantasy just feel bad. The conflict with rage, cunning action, flurry of blow, GWM, PAM, etc. just makes me sad for some of the builds that I've had fun with that weren't min-maxxed smite machines, but still felt like they weren't purposefully introducing even more conflict into my build. But TIL that the dudes really hate multiclassing lol.

Just make whatever attributes you use (standard array, point buy or dice rolls) and then add +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 to wherever you like once you’re done. That way people could choose more flavourful backgrounds for their character, whatever species they liked and their core stats wouldn’t suffer.

In thinking about Colby wanting to put Fighter 1 on every class I think I it found a background feature to make it make sense: The thing that we as a modern culture are lacking in our identity is a sense of "National Identity". In most fantasy settings the world exists at a medieval or feudal level of advancement and during those time periods population centers (Nations/Kingdom/City-states) would develop their own identify based on the local geography and their inhabitants interactions with it. Population centers in the mountains would have plentiful access to ore so they might become a hub for Smiting or jewelry making. Likewise Port towns would likely have multiple cultures interacting so merchants may be multi-lingual and populations might have segregated neighborhoods by origin. The last and most noteworthy distinction for this discussion would be having a Cultural Center for a specific class as the centerpiece of the Population center. Its not uncommon for Population centers to be built up around a Coliseum or School of Magic, so in those instances I think most everyone in there would start out life with aspirations to "make it big" in their "National Class". Simply building into your character backstory that you grew up in the shadow of a Coliseum might be enough justification to say that you started out Fighter then discovered your main class after you worked your way out of those Spartan conditions; "it was just a part of life there, everyone learned how to fight".

39:12 I did this with my spell less ranger rework and it works really well. You can custom tailor your hunter's mark (called Quarry) to fit your build. A swarmkeeper might want to be able to reduce a creatures speed by 10 ft and be able to target multiple creatures with just one use of HM to further control the battlefield with their swarm. A Gloomstalker might want to lean into an expanded critical strike range and increasing size of the damage die to make the most out of the first round of combat. Its a cool system if I do say so myself

@TheMasterblah2 ай бұрын
No. You're either swapping a melee attack for a grapple, or you are using a feature that lets you attack AND grapple in the same action. So you could roll to hit, deal damage if you hit, and then make them grapple save or you can just make them grapple save. A grapple failed save does not cause damage by itself outside of specific circumstances. *edit* The grappler feat actually requires your unarmed strike to hit to activate the grapple save on the same attack.

My one attempt at making a character so far, it was so aggravating making a character. I'm making a warlock and I was like, guess he is going to be an Entertainer. Why, that gives me Charisma as an option and musician is a decent feat. Merchant or Wayfarer would have been other options with the lucky feat. But every Warlock I make would have one of those three feats. Backgrounds really need to give only tool proficiencies and skills. Ability scores and feats should just be options you choose. Granted I"m not a fan of backgrounds to begin with because I think they are restrictive and try to force a character to be a specific way when it makes no sense for your character idea.

I'll probably disagree with the dudes on the more diverse Paladin. 2024 Divine Smite feels a lot like 2014 PHB Brutal Critical, lol. Basically to-go damage choice will be using Extra-Damage continuous spells to stack on your attacks, and if you crit, you smite. If the goal is to make multiclassing "worse" 2024 PHB falls flat on its face when they remove the spell-slot cap on Divine Smite to just make it ostensibly better multiclassing than on pure Paladin. If a 2014 17th level Paladin did a bunch of damage on a demon / fiend, great, that's like their entire purpose in a nutshell, smite evil, which your holy zealot warrior ought to be doing. Divine Smite feels like a trap spell that is 1 damage die too short of being worth using and that feels bad; the "Paladin's Smite" is a passing gas Ribbon feature after level 3 that just gets worse as you gain levels - I'd love it if the change to Divine Smite actually resulted into something like Devotion's level 15 feature (except EARLIER) that did something more specific for Smite - but they seemed to abandon that idea / concept when they dropped shared spell lists / unified class progression... resulting in a bunch of very samy 2014 Paladin subclasses with slightly better channel divinities (or worse in Glory's case) and that's kinda sad. Divine Favor being the way it id feels like they really didn't want Paladins to bother using Divine Smite at all tbh.

If WotC's next "Tasha's fix" for Ranger (which is, of course, already indicative of how poorly they've repeatedly implemented this class mechanically)... if their next fix isn't a complete overhaul that ACTUALLY creates a "whole new class".... I'm just giving up on Ranger for good. I won't play them, & I won't even watch videos by content creators regarding Rangers. They had 10 years. And they also had 50 years of history over 5+ editions. They had 3rd party content and homebrews to look at. And this is what we got. Idc if the Ranger is "playable." Idc if the Ranger is "powerful". It's boring. It's terrible. It's own mechanics play against each other. Compared to the sheer glut of very powerful & useful features that the Paladin gets... this is embarrassing. Also, when JC said in the video that "magic is important to the Ranger" (or something to that effect), but then followed up by telling us how Hunter & Beast Master are the "less magical subclass options" that don't have additional spells known lists. Just bad. Really, really, really bad. And they tried to tell us that it's good 🤦♂️ At least have some self awareness.

Interesting take on multiclassing. Haven’t played much dnd, but my characters tend to style and bio some kind of multi class to rogue. I’m sure there are a lot of good options out there to fit in one class. It’s all fun so doesn’t matter if I’m a “bad build”

RE: Ranger discussion I've been playing a Ranger for 3 years now and I think what they possibly should have looked at was removing hunters Mark as a spell and tied it in as a second level feature that has uses tied to proficiency and you can gain half uses back on a short rest. Keep the concentration on it but you gain another feature at 5th level which means you can use it without concentration. That way it stops multi class dips but means that your character like others really come online at level 5. Like you guys said at later levels the damage dice might increase or you could have elemental effects like fire arrows or flaming blades ect. It's OK to Base a class around that abillity just has to be not tied to Spells.

A really cynical part of me thinks that the reason they haven't included custom backgrounds as a default option is so that they can sell more of them later without them seeming redundant. Yes, they'll probably make an option to customise them on D&D beyond eventually, but they might well make it just annoying enough that you'd want to just take a premade one just to avoid the hassle...

You can tell from the 2014 Palladin Spell list that you were only ever designed to Smite. Every other spell is concentration.

Subclass I miss most: Tempest Cleric

54:00 I'm with Monty. The game is made worse, not better, by the obsessive multi-class optimizing. What percentage of multi-classing is done for role play reasons? Almost none.
@MaMastoast3 ай бұрын
A lot of multiclassing is done to reach a specific type of character which doesnt fit into the mold of one of the predefined classes. In that sense, Id say plenty of multiclassing is done partially due to RP
@damedley753 ай бұрын
@MaMastoast Maybe you're in a different crowd than me. I'm used to players sticking with a class for the color and RP reasons or multiclassing strictly for optimization, and tacking on some RP. But there are exceptions of course.

Yes! I am not a fan of Artificer, Warforged (robot) and fire arms. I am so right there with you Monte! I am glad stuff like that is there for people whom like it, but it breaks out of the medieval fantasy. This is where I really like the Alchemist Class that Dungeon Dudes created. It opens the door to "technology", but keeps it within medieval fantasy. For an example, I really do appreciate people trying to make a Steampunk version of D&D. Still to really make the work, it should be it's own separate thing with it's own classes and sub classes, etc. Then, there I am all for fire arms, Warforged, Artificer type classes. There they should have more Artificer type classes.

The fact that you have to have a degree in IT to get your computer to capture audio from a device and send it to all of the relevant applications really makes me think that online meeting software has a long road to move forward technologically.

Star wars 5e does their backgrounds pretty good to where you have a small list of fades you can choose from that is linked to your background instead of just one

RE: race and scores; I would be fine with races having increased maximums for specific abilities. 20 is considered maximum human potential (used to be 18) and other races should have ability maximums reflecting how they are different as part of their class identity. Between background and ability score increases can reach 20, but it’s not guaranteed. Building the difference reflects a character identity that won’t impact much of your primary play zones. For higher levels, epic feats obviates character maximums up to 30, so it’s something that will rarely come into play while still adding flavor.

I don’t hate this idea. Saying that orcs can reach a 25 strength, while gnomes can reach a 25 intelligence does little to stop you from playing the character you want to play, while still adding to the identity. I don’t hate this idea. Neat!

Would armour of agathys stack with the new moon druid gaining temp hp seems like a scary combo if it does

I’m a little sad to see the Undead Warlock and Grave Cleric didn’t make the cut, I feel like those are so on theme and were also really unique & viable subclasses

A Sorcerer Paladin is the combination I want to play the most. 2 levels of Paladin and the rest sorcerer. So the majority of the time, I'm just doing sorcerer things. Firebolts, burning hands, and Fly. But once in a while, break out the sword, go super saiyan, cast hold monster, and then auto crit with a smite. So while the nerfs to the paladin are a little disheartening, the removal spell slot cap for smite has me very excited. Optimal? Definitely not. A 7th level spell slot would be better spent doing almost anything else. But guaranteeing a crit to deal 16d8 just sounds fun.

@crazydeadperson right!!! I got into DnD through Magic The Gathering, where Artificers are common place in a fantasy setting. They're not new to DnD either looking at you, Rock Gnome. They're in the Forgotten Realms, Ebberon, Dragonlance, and others, Im sure. Ebberon probably leans more into Sci-Fi fantasy than others, but I don't understand why some are against the class. It's OK for a Rock Gnome to Create Constructs, but there can't be Artificers??
