Dungeon Keeper 1 is a very charming game. I absolutely recommend playing it. Retrospectively, I'd say, I like it better. But this game is also great.

that mobile trash, EA thought they could take a random property they own but forget about and tried turning it into a money sucking machine, crazy how long it lasted but glad it's gone

The one with the timer I got stuck at for ages! Never even took out the hero portals, simply weaselled my way through the middle with a bridge and killed blue before the heroes could swamp the level. The Nemesis level however I simply could never complete as a kid. Simply couldn't crack his defences. Found it much easer years later however, just built up a proper army and demolished him. The final mission I captured a royal guard, converted and possessed him to demolish the enemies defences. Absolutely loved this game as a kid, just playing for hours watching the creatures go about their business and building fancy dungeons!

Horned Reaper from DKII is probably my most favourite monster bad guy of all times. I wish we could see him in a movie that would have dark humor, just like in the Interview with Horned Reaper that i saw at least thousand times as a child :)

DK1 is absolutely hands down the best DK game, you MUST try it, with the KeeperFX community patch. Outstanding game and patch.

I think I love DK 1 & 2 equally...whenever I play DK1 I miss things from DK2 and vica versa. Like, DK1 overall has cooler creatures imo and those creatures are more powerful because they learn more abilites than in the second game as they level up...and, if we're just talking the campaign, you get access to all those creatures way earlier (think you have almost everything by level 8). On the flip side I think the mana system in DK2 is far, FAR superior to spending gold to cast spells. Also really like that you don't have to research everything all over again on every level, but being able to research upgraded spells still makes the library feel cool and useful. Also: combat pit and black knights

Dungeon Keeper one in my opinion was a better game. However there was a lot more "lose and restart until you understand the map" dungeon keeper 2 is pretty good about letting you know about dangerous areas. The first game just dropped 4 level 8 samurai on you that butchers your entire dungeon very quickly if you dig in the wrong areas. That said I enjoy the creatures a lot more in the first game. It isn't loaded with gimmicky maps like the second game is, I personally enjoyed the heros in the first game more as well.

I prefer DK1 to this. The 2 games fairly similar, but there are various differences between them. I personally think a lot of the changes DK2 makes are questionable at best and that it feels a bit dumbed down in some ways. Some notable differences being that the training room can train units all the way to level 10. This might make the game sound easier, but each unit trains up at different rates and training is usually where the vast majority of your gold ends up going. Units also just die when they run out of health. When you have the prison you can enable imprisoning, ordering your units to try to knock enemies out so they can be captured. The downside to this is that knocked out enemies will get back up if they are not taken to the prison within a couple minutes. Additionally rooms also have to be researched before they can be built. Normally the treasury, lair, hatchery, training room and library will be available at the start of a level and everything else needs to be researched. There is a mod called KeeperFX for DK1 which is essentially source port at this point that fixes numerous things and adds quality of life improvements to the game. DK1 is a game that I would recommend using the wiki for because there are a lot of things the game doesn't really tell you.

​@@ShadoSpartan44not more strategy. Just different. The gameplay is similar, but dk2 has some ballance tweaks to make it faster. Training limit, mana, weaker posesion. No more research for rooms.

A major, game-changing difference between Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 was in the wall digging ability. In Dungeon Keeper 1 you could build your tunnels and your dungeon any way you wanted and then, once your goblins had "reinforced" said walls, nobody could dig through them. That meant that enemy heroes and enemy dungeon keepers had to find a way into your dungeon first, usually by busting down one of your doors you placed to connect with the outside zones, and only from there begin the invasion of your home. This allowed the players to craft their dungeon like mazes, build up traps and bottlenecks and secret tunnels, and generally dictate how the enemy had to move if they wanted to invade YOUR dungeon and reach your Core to destroy it. You could build your dungeon with strategy in mind. This was changed in Dungeon Keeper 2 for no understandable reason. Now enemy heroes and keepers could dig through reinforced walls anywhere they wanted (it just took a little longer) and essentially became able to invade your home from anywhere and bypassing any amount of traps or tricks or secret doors you placed and beeline straight for your core. I will never understand why they changed this.

The first dungeon keeper was better because it felt less restrictive (beating creatures to dead (your still the baddy 😁)). Btw the "horny" is a nickname for Hornet Reaper.

You owe yourself to play Dungeon keeper 1 as well, an open source port released recently which makes playing it on modern systems a breeze

Personally I find Dungeon Keeper 2 to be a good game but the pacing is a bit off compared to DK1. The first version had very quick reactions to everything the player is doing, the animations were shorter, the sounds were tighter, the game feels responsive and tight (for the lack of a better word to describe it). The sounds were harsh, the general atmosphere was captivating and kept you on your toes. DK2 feels much more chill and laid back, although it is overall probably a better game on paper, fixing a lot of issues DK1 had (e.g. fixing "stacks of doom" when you could just drop all your creatures on top of an enemy and destroy them in a matter of seconds, making workshop require money to operate, changing how imp numbers are managed, requiring creatures to enter battle to level up after a certain point, etc). I personally can't stand the pacing of DK2, but I guess it depends on what you're used to and on your expectations. I really hope someone will actually make a proper remake of DK1, not DK2 (although War for the Overworld is a very good remake of DK2 in my opinion).
