Cute kitties come to raise wholesome levels once again...anyway, on to talking about the stories I fully agree with the idea of letting a party do messed up things as long as everyone is okay with a thing (including the DM, of course) as a DM, and there is something to be said about the OP not being a good fit for the child torture game. That said, everyone at the table, as mentioned above, needs to be okay with such things, and you need to acknowledge when someone is doing something evil, as consequences, good or bad, are the core part of D&D, almost as important as the social aspect of the game.

With stories like these, the cat intermissions are a necessity. Sadly, I think Blue has what it takes to be successful. With the ability to deceive people for an extended time, he could become a highly successful con man, crooked business executive, or corrupt politician. Society handsomely rewards people who are experts at deception.

It took me a minute to place the name "Ravnica", since I don't actually play Magic: the Gathering (I kind of dropped it after the fifth edition since game and card design went in directions less interesting to me), but as soon as I did I was waiting for the "huge demon orgy where everybody is drugged up, most of the participants will end up dead and you can't miss it because it's the social event everybody's been putting so much work towards happening". They are - usually - perfectly capable of throwing normal and sane parties, but they will never discriminate against the uncontrollable and self-destructive ones. I'd say it's ironic that this DM chose to focus the game in a setting with a lot of people who don't really care that much about consent... but it isn't really all that ironic. As soon as I heard "I'm afraid I'll be alone my whole life because I lie to everyone"... this isn't something somebody presenting themselves as a together person will suddenly say. This is something they say because they expect it to work. And the reason why they expect it to work is because they honestly cannot connect between their actions and the consequences. It's not that this person values dice rolls over friendshp, it's that he cannot conceive of anything he feels like doing hurting that friendship. And you cannot teach him this, either through explanation or punishment. He can be a good enough friend... except that if he gets bored he might do anything for amusement without first thinking that it might hurt you - and afterwards he'll still feel like it makes no sense that a decision which felt good to him could somehow be connected with hurting you. (In extreme cases this can be very scary.) It's hard to spot this if you haven't seen it before because there's no malice or deception involved, just a diminished or missing capability to process negative reinforcement. And you can't really do anything about it other than tolerate or avoid that person. Punishment will never work and explanation rarely will, because they feel like they're already behaving perfectly.

Is there a curse or something on the Ravnica setting? I once played a campaign in that setting too and while it started on a simple dungeon crawling with a party all from the same guild it quickly shifted in a labyrinthine save the Multiverse story in which we didn't even fight the final boss. It was all done in a cut scene. At least none of us didn't have their backstory changed...

People like the guy from the last story always makes me think that these players think d&d is Skyrim. Where one person is responsible for everything and any companions should stay in the back and do nothing unless they have been expressly told to do something from the main character. D&d is cooperative people.

I had a player who wanted to make a homebrew class that was all about teleportation. He asked if he could test it in my campaign, what he brought was an overpowered anime style class that could use all exotic weapons, this was 3.5 btw. Had rouge sneak attack, and the monk’s ability to add his wisdom to his ac. And still wear armor. He then tried to say that if this class was grappled he could teleport away while doing an attack that auto crit. While I’m here let’s talk about his homebrew race that could use chain lighting as a racial ability.

I remember the requirements for exotic weapons back then were some kind of base strength and then some other feats on top of that. And you're telling me he just wanted that for free? Hell no.

@@catandrobbyflores For most weapons, it was just BAB +1. Only the bastard sword and dwarven waraxe had a Strength requirement. Even so, EWP is generally regarded as a deeply suboptimal feat except _maybe_ for spiked chain or similar cheesy weapon. Just because a feat has prereqs, doesn't mean the feat is actually good.

Second story: Title and user's account name makes my skin crawl. OK! Any game that involves orgies is an instant nope. I'm fuqing right on out of the door. What the hell DM!!!!! 3rd Story: Uh... what? What the hell party! The NPC is only 7! GTFO of that group and that they did. Good on you OP. Shadow cats are lazing around, being good voids. 4th Story: Great. We're beginning with a dice cheater. Oh wait, it's this story. WHY!!!! You can't win at DND. It's impossible! You can't win at DND. You just play. 5th Story: Huh? That player is an ahole? I am confused as to why he left the game due to one player? I'd ask the party first and if nothing changes, then leave. So that is what? 5 masters roaming your house?

There are lots of RNGs that are plenty good enough for a typical game, role-playing or otherwise. Mersenne Twister is a personal favorite. The problem is making sure there are no back doors. At that point I'd look for a reasonably secure dice rolling site or open source bot from a writer with no stakes in the game.

11:20 Certainly right there. 9/10 times, the villains will always have lines they would never cross (with the 10th being truly black-hearted bastards that WOULD cross those lines). The fact that the party was wholeheartedly going along with torturing a 7 YEAR OLD KID, that automatically makes them worse than whatever BBEG was set for that campaign. They also sound like the sort that would throw the excuse "Oh, iT'S faNTAsy! We cAn Do whATvEr wE wanT!". Which, obviously, does NOT make entertaining the idea of torturing a child any better!

On that last story I would have just stopped helping the paladin. Especially on the grounds that I don't want to be accused of being a spotlight hog and let him suffer the consequences of his actions. With someone like him it would most likely boil over in front of the dm as he seems like someone who can't handle consequences. Of course, like after doge said, showing the DM in the comments he sent. Then if paladin tries to initiate PVP, Bard would be within his rights to defend himself should the DM allow it. Although hopefully he wouldn't.

Speaking from experience, odds are that Blue was feeling some form of inadiquecy which he was combating via control. I.E. he wasn't feeling like he was contributing/able to contribute to the RP bits as other players so he 'made up' for it by being good at combat and his cheating the rolls and control of information was his way of gaining a measure of control and/or importance in the group. He wrote an entire bot, even if it was to cheat, for the group which isn't something minor. It also sounds like he wasn't being malicious or a glory-hog (EX: You only noticed his odd rolls upon reviewing them. So he wasn't trying to show off.) You mentioned he had issues with lying. Odds are he was simply a complusive liar who made stuff up because he felt it helped him fit in and that was, ultimately, his goal. To have a friend group. I'm not saying you were wrong to kick him by any means. Ignoring the multiple second chances and cheating in a tabletop aren't exactly 'minor'. But it also isn't a clear-cut 'I want to be the main star and show-boat so I'm going to make a mary sue OC who gets all the nat 20's' situation either. Having been there, he probably felt very lonely and overshadowed by other players and the lying and cheating was him trying to gain some degree of control over the situation. There's a decent chance he may have also had prior bad experiences with GM's/players who demanded min-maxed (or at least highly optimized) characters and had some trauma regarding that, but it's impossible to know from what was described.

That last story makes so little sense it's honestly laughable. I remember a guy in an old game who'd swear at people to "fuck off, stop trying to steal my kill" if an ally flanked a bad guy with him, or he'd get angry if you healed him because "I don't need your fucking help" or go "FUCKING IDIOTS, WHY DIDN'T ANYONE HELP?!" if he goes down, he only lasted one session before being kicked, the guy in the last story reminds me of him.

As someone talking from personal experience with mental health and nowhere near a professional, blue may have some neurosi about winning, but that is no excuse to treat others that way. The OP handled blue great, expressing what they did wrong and how it affected OP. Past that there is nothing they could do. Hopefully it was enough for blue to self reflect and either change their actions or seek professional help. The story is a great lesson for anyone having to deal with conflict in any social game as well as anyone using the excuse of mental health.

Oh man, Ravnica is such an incredible setting for D&D - if a bit hard to run properly - sad that OP didn't like it. It just offers so much variety, all on the same world - a large, incredibly diverse metropolis where you could be venturing out into the savage lands of the Gruul tribes, where only the strongest survive, be a magistrate in the Azorius courts, dealing with political intrigue, or be a semi-legally operating Orzhov Syndicate operative, basically Better Call Saul if Saul Goodman was also a "fake" priest.

First story: EW. NO. WHY. I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET THESE HORRIFIC IMAGES OUT OF MY HEAD. Second story: EW. NO. WHY. You do NOT change PCs’ backstories without their consent, ESPECIALLY not in sexualized ways! Fucking gross. By the way, if OP ever reads this, I want them to know that I love the arc they had planned for Marie, and I would happily welcome her and her charge to my table. Third story: This is why we have Session Zero. Whenever you start a new game or add a new player, you have a session zero to establish everyone’s boundaries. OP should have been made aware that child torture would be a thing in this game and given the opportunity to opt out before such a scene occurred. Fourth story: You know, Blue, if you’re afraid that you’ll end up alone because you keep lying to people, there’s a simple solution to that. JUST FUCKING STOP LYING TO PEOPLE! Also, that party is way too patient. High school kid or not, I wouldn’t have given him a second chance, let alone a third one. Cheaters have no place in my games. Fifth story: I will never understand that guy’s logic. OP is hogging the spotlight by giving the spotlight to him? That makes literally no sense.

Weird take on the Ravnica story with the war forged op: op is complaining for having played d&d. 99.99% of 5e is generic save the world plots with no tie in of character back story; even WotC campaigns do this so it is the standard example of play that most newer dms ape. OP just seems like they are expecting a critical roll experience on a McDonald's budget. The dm does not seem like a bad dm (the demon party was an odd choice, but demons are not going to play checkers for fun). He tried to engage the player sitting out of a scene by giving them a reason to do so by a slight alteration of the backs story that the character would not have control over. It is not any worse than saying "your character's brother is in there" when the player had not made a brother in their back story. Not ideal, but I get why they would do it if they are the only player sitting and watching what is going on without interacting. Not using character back story is more common in most d&d games than not, in my experience. Having a Critical Roll style campaign where the campaign is focused on the characters is one style, but the DM specifically pitched a world based adventure set in Ravnica; that was an exploration based campaign where you are finding out about the world, politics, magic, and characters of the world. This is a more common format for d&d, and the type of story line op wanted was an internal conflict where they talk to an npc follower (the kid) for most of it. Not the best for an action oriented game, and it would isolate their action from the rest of the party. Also, smells of main character syndrome.
