I’m running a GURPS game where I have to determine the sexuality of all my NPCs before hand, because some of my players took the Attractive advantage, which means they gets a bonus on a roll *if the NPC is attracted to the PC* It’s the only time it ever comes up, but every NPC encounter we have pretty much immediately starts with “So do which way do these guys swing” for the purposes of determining how well they get along during the conversation. I also try not to outright tell the players when a NPC is of a different sexuality than what would provide the bonus,,, but it can be pretty obvious lol. It has been a fun way to get more diversity because usually I don’t decide their sexuality until they met and I do with a roll.

By saying they want their game to be "as good as" Critical Role, they're creating a false equivalence, that forces them to use similarity to Critical Role as their metric for how good their game is. You should be measuring how good your game is by how fulfilling an experience it is, which gives it the potential to be infinitely better than a show you have no say in.

And with a passive perception of 30 a DM is stuck down 2 paths really. They can either accept it and tell the player everything and never hide anything. Or be forced to hide everything through magical means. And it can risk the player becoming the main character as every situation would start with describing the whole set piece to the one player or risk invalidating the build.

The first-time DM, who wanted his game to be as good as Critical Role should take note that Matt Mercer booted out a player, when he became a problem, so that he did not continue to be a problem, and explode the whole game. Tiberius is barely even mentioned in the comic books, and not mentioned, at all, in the animated series. Orion Acaba (sp?) was a problem player. It wasn't so bad, apparently, at their home games, but once they got into the public eye, he became worse, and actually caused problems with the FANS, so he had to go. Critical Role is great to watch, and you can definitely learn a LOT from watching it, both on how to play and how to DM. One of the lessons to take (and you'll only get it from series 1) is when to cut the ties with a problem player. Unfortunately, you don't see HOW to do it, as it happened backstage, but yeah. You can see the cut-off point. And Tiberius wasn't even a murder hobo. He was just a selfish player who couldn't communicate well, which caused problems with the others.

The third story does not make much sense to me; a passive perception of 30 seems a bit much. +5 for awareness feat, +5 for having a wisdom of twenty, and you can get a +5 if you go digging through the dmg for highly rare magic items is the best I can count. Home brew feature? Generally, the high passive perception is the same problem as most min maxing; you just increase the numbers so the creatures have a +20 to stealth or whatever so it is not a given outcome if you want surprise to be an option. It is brute force, but that is hoe a lot of gm's handle someone who cheeses the rules to do 50 damage on first level or something, so does not seem that bad to me. Surprise is a really unspectacular factor in 5e anyway; it really only comes up with very specific classes or monsters, so I do not know why you would do a build that specific.
@porkupineexe68622 жыл бұрын
32 is about the max you can reliably get as a player 10 base Wis = +5 (as you say) Perception Expertise = + 5 Observant = +5 Advantage = +5 (phb “Passive Checks”) But aside from that: when is having an entire turn where your team just goes first an unspectacular bonus????
@rynowatcher2 жыл бұрын
@@porkupineexe6862 sure advantage gives you a +5, but how are you getting that reliably? Not to mention they are getting attacked by boars. Assuming this is level appropriate, they have to be at least level 8 for two feats and the darkness affecting their sight? @Lersa252 жыл бұрын
Well, the player put a lot of effort and resources into that high perception, so why steal the joy from him? As you say, no surprise is not a big deal. Just let him see the freaking goblins a moment before they attack. But if the party knew about the ambush, they could be creative with that, and that's certainly not something a DM wants from them, right? And if the DM knew that he does not want Passive Perception and lockpicking in his game, then he could tell the OP so. OP would just put those resources into Con or whatever. But it's easier to say nothing and hate the character.

You might also be able to con the dm in to giving you advantage for “working together” Any number of magical items grant advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks such as the sentinels shield or eyes of the eagle. The spell Enhance Ability will give you advantage on All Wis Checks for an hour. Also Im not saying the player is right, just that *you can* easily get up to a 30, you only need one feat (variant human) 1 Ability Score Increase (assuming you roll or point buy an 18 Wis) and the dm to be willing to grant you advantage. Perception expertises are just a class feature, for rogues at first level so. You can literally have all of this by level 4. Actually get access to almost all of it at level 1, the only thing you have to wait on is the Ability Score Increase. Also darkness is not that hard to deal with, produce flame is a cantrip. You can also like,, buy a torch or a lantern
@rynowatcher2 жыл бұрын
@@porkupineexe6862 this dude was hiding in darkness to get an advantage on an ambush, so I am thinking he was playing a race with dark vision, and throwing a pack of boars at a 9th level party seems beyond easy; not sure why you would even complain about not being able to see them coming as a +4 is not very likely to hit them at that level unless you had a lot of wizards. There is a twighlight cleric spell that gives you 300' dark vision, but most races only have 60' dark vision, meaning they are blind past 60' and creatures within that 60' have advantage on stealth checks because it is treated as dim light. OP is complaining about not seeing things till they are 30' away, which is how most dark vision would work (passed first check and failed the second as they crept closer). Sure, there are a lot of magic items that grant advantage to wisdom/perception, but they all tend to be toward the rare side of things and advantage does not stack, so an item that grants advantage with a team member doing the help action should still only give you a +5. Plus a dm that less you start out with a rare magic item is throwing boars at you? This just seems odd.
