Hey, thanks for sharing my story. I’m glad to know that I wasn’t over reacting to what my DM was doing. I did end up talking to the players to see how they felt and they had a similar problem with him. We’ve decided to ditch the DM and I’ve decided to try my hand as DMing. I’m a little nervous but I’m taking things slow and making something small

You weren't overreacting at all. That was not a healthy D&D environment you were in, so good on you for leaving. And good luck with DMing! It's a tall mountain to climb, but it's a fun journey. My advice would be: Relax. Don't feel like you need an answer for everything. Get comfortable with improvisation, and let the players tell the story just as much as you are. It'll make your life easier and the players will have more fun because they're steering the boat too.

My players have luckily said that they aren’t going to except a masterpiece and to take it slow. I’m hoping i do well because I love playing D&D

Re The Cat Poop story: You know at first I was thinking maybe OP was being a little extra with expecting other people to completely overhaul their house to accommodate them, but then the poop smeared on the wall happened and I was like...yeah I take that back, those people are disgusting. It seems like there might be a mental health issue on the part of the hosts there if op is being honest. I do kind of think it might have been played up a bit because they said they did not really notice the cat droppings till someone pointed them out. I personally would be looking for droppings if I can smell them so I do not step in it and I would think that is a fairly common reaction. Suddenly realizing you are surrounded by shit seems a but comical.

Its not too unreasonable to ask people with pets to vaccume/clean up before someone with pet allergies (and asthma triggered allergies) visits. And if OP's friend's case was so severe that he needed a lung transplant and the condition eventually killed him, cleaning up is the LEAST you could do.

One of my best friends and his son are both very allergic to cats. I have four. He just pops some meds beforehand and doesn't stay very long at my house. It sucks but, that's the way it is. Part of living with a condition is knowing what's a bad idea for you to do.

Like, I normally don't advocate being a busy body like that but if the situation was as bad as they say then those animals weren't being treated correctly and should have been removed until that couple cleaned up not only the entire house but their entire personalities in regards to how they treat their animals.

As someone who's suffered his whole life with allergy triggered asthma, that story about the neglectful cat owners really peeves me off. The earthquake story reminds me of an event in college. I was at the gaming club and a joke was made at another table (I don't recall what game they were playing). Someone at the table, responding to a comment said "Who? God?" and then a crack of thunder shook the dorm. The table erupted in laughter and the GM pointed to the ceiling and shouted "Two Style Points to the Creator!"

I have a very hard time keeping my house clean, and I'm extremely self-conscious about it. This story about the cat poo house has made me feel so much better about my home, you have no idea. Because that is a whole other level. I can't even begin to understand people who would live that way AND actually have other people come to their home! Just wow. Mark clearly has a hard time telling reality and a fantasy game a part. In campaigns that I'm in I can tell things a part and not get it confused. I may not have started any romances in some campaigns I was in with my fiance and his characters, but slowly we're going to have some romances between some characters of ours and make it sweet~

I have several cats in a small house. Messes build up QUICK. However. If you regularly clean and stay on top of it, develop the habit of keeping cleaned up, it's manageable. And there are all kinds of tools to help, too. Lots of cat hair everywhere? A ChomChom roller is gonna be your best friend. As is a portable upholstery shampooer. Is it back breaking and exhausting? Some days, but it's worth it for a clean house. Do not subject your poor guests to a disgusting house. Especially if they're asthmatic. Be considerate. Yeah, it's your house, but do you really wanna live in filth? Because I've done it and I can vouch for how shitty of a quality of life it is, for people and animals.

1. My wifey and I have the opposite rule - we eschew romance arcs. If any romance happens with either of us, it's with each other. Too many weirdos don't have any sense of ethics or self awareness or respect for other people's relationships. For those who insist on romance arcs, you MUST acquire the consent of EVERYONE - including other players at the table and if your subject of romance has an IRL partner, you need their consent too. Saying or believing otherwise is creepy and speaks of r*pey beliefs. 2. Ugh, a DM who plays PCs vs DMs. Nope, out. When this crap DM sends videos, you should send videos about how to be a better DM, and even ask him why he isn't as good as Matt Mercer from Critical Role. While I normally despise this, I do approve of using it as retaliation against someone like this DM. It's worth leaving any bad game, bad DM. Too many red flags before the Mary Sue DMPC shows up. 3. I would never remain in a house which is in anyway unfit for my presence. I won't remain anywhere that smells awful, is a huge mess, has cockroaches or silverfish or any other pests that could follow me back home, unclean animals, etc. If someone is sick, they MUST avoid contact with others. It's not okay to endanger others this way. These people are gross and I've seen a lot of gross people whether they live alone or with children and/or animals and it's always awful. I wouldn't even send an email - I would just insta-block them out and let them figure out why. These people don't care about themselves, therefore they can't care about or respect others.

You don’t really need to train them to use the litter box- they just know. To be fair, my cat doesn't bury her doings. She uses the litter tray but leaves her doings uncovered. Then again, she was a rescue and was very nervy when we got her, so we suspect she didn't have the best life until then (she was eight when we got her; she's now 15 and spoilt rotten by us). I completely agree that if they're not using the litter tray, then either they don't like something about the tray (could even be the type of litter), they're stressed and trying to get your attention or mark territory to feel more secure, or similar issues. Either way, these people really shouldn't be allowed to keep cats. I do wonder, though, whether the person further down speculating that the people might have serious mental health issues is on to something because I don't feel that anyone would choose to live in a literal shithole.

The politically correct way to approach the third story is that the couple have some sort of mental health issue and need sympathy, shouldn't judge them, they're to be pitied, and so on. I prefer to reserve my sympathy and pity for people who recognize and work on their illness. That they didn't have enough shame to avoid inviting other people over suggests to me that they don't see anything wrong with how they live. Those people are just lazy. The only ones I feel sorry for are the people they invited over - and their cats. Cleaning a litter box takes all of ten minutes, and they couldn't even be arsed to do that frequently enough to keep the cats from crapping everywhere. There's also the possibility that the cats are crapping outside the box due to a medical condition that they're too lazy to attend to.

Story 3: Look; my house has 12 cats but I always make sure to clean the boxes once to twice a day and use cat litter that absorbs the cat excrement smell. I even have a pet carpet cleaner to clean up puke or pee spots and fuqing hell! 12:50 mark. How in gods name... WHY!? Napkin or paper towel; pick up and put in trash or back in the box and clean the spot. This is... in all of my years of owning cats; it never, never, NEVER got that bad. Tracked litter and the occasional accident is one thing. Pure negligence is something else. No; just... no. As for OP's friend; I am sorry. My condolences. Simba has a bleep going on. Story 4: Whoa! Oof never spray aerosol around asthmatic ppl. Obviously the severity of the asthma matters, but like I have asthma and *am a smoker* and I can't stand aerosol. I can take a rip from a bong and cough cough, ok it's over. Aerosol though? That shit feels like it's sticking in my lungs and I can cough and cough and it won't get out. It clings to my nose hair and the back of my tongue. Hate that shit, purely because it feels bad. Yeah it won't cause a coughing fit thatll kill me, but it's insanely uncomfortable and hard to get out. Just spray some smelly oils in the air, burn an incense in a far corner (incense can also hurt asthma but I find it way less bad), or put out some of those sticks with the oil. I disagree with the phrase "no D&D is better than bad D&D." I've been part of some games that had some pretty rough players that made for some pretty rough D&D, and I've always been able to make the game fun for both myself and my fellow players (often by making fun of the problem players, and sometimes by playing funny characters to counteract the problem players). Fortunately, I've not yet played under a crappy DM, though I have been a crappy DM a few times.

I have asthma, your take is pretty awful. Cat waste has particulates that can both trigger and cause serious respiratory issues. Op has every right to tell them off for not cleaning their house and insisting that they still play there. Mental health is NEVER an excuse to put someone else's health in jeopardy. What is more the person in question has signs of really crippling mental disease that they may not be able to help without professional treatment. I think OP was justified for leaving; maybe they should not have gone back for game 2 if it was that bad? No one made them come back. My take is the shaming about it after the fact feels a bit like they are making fun of the folks with a clear mental disease. This was not a warning not to go over to Bob smith's house in everytown, USA for fear that it will trigger breathing problems but an excuse to demonize these people for something they do not seem to have the ability to control due to mental illness.

Op have them ample time and the benefit of the doubt by literally saying "Hey, if you don't have time to clean or you aren't feeling well we can just cancel the session". That's not shaming them, that's not something that can be excused with mental health issues and the fault does not lie with op for "Still going". With mental health people are expected to show some degree of patience and understanding which op showed, what you're asking for and expecting goes far beyond that almost into mental and emotional abuse territory. That is fine, but it kind of crosses a line for me that they then shared this story in the tone of for amusement. That is the problem I have here; they are mocking the hosts in this story for something I do not think they can help after they removed themselves. It is the nature of mental illness that the hosts cannot see that they are living in filth, if you believe the OP. They are describing someone that probably is too unhealthy to live on their own because those conditions are likely to sicken a healthy person. No, OP has no responsibility to care for the host, but complaining about the state of their house after the fact is a bit like complaining about having to walk slower when they were with their friend with a wheelchair. The story also seems a bit exaggerated to me; if it smelt that bad, why go in at all? Why did OP not notice they were literally surrounded by shit till their friend pointed it out if it was everywhere? Why ask to use the bathroom when the common area was that poorly maintained; if it is truthful you are just going back to see how bad it is? Why not leave with the friend immediately when they saw how bad the air quality was (they stayed for 2 games)?

Here's hoping the sequel is just as breathtaking as the first. The equipment and landmarks were all beautifully detailed yet the fantasy elements weren't left out and felt like it belonged to the same world as the designs of the characters. And the combat will rightfully kick your ass if you are under prepared. It's such a beautiful game.
