Instead they lead people on to believe it was a regular game instead of their personal roleplay. They're the same as any other problem player.

All I have to say for the first story is: anyone who only cares about the enjoyment of one person in the group, should not run a group activity for that group. Hope things are going well for you, and if not, then about as well as they can be.

Exactly! it would not be that hard for DM to set up a 1 on 1 roleplay rpg with his wife and have fun that way instead of bringing other people into and forcing them to play along in something that's supposed to be team based.

I can imagine scenarios where focusing on one player could be reasonable. Like, maybe a friend's partner is suffering from serious mental health issues and a game would be a way to keep them socially connected, but they've been pretty fragile so the game is going to be shaped around their needs-if I were part of that social group, and especially if I liked that person alright, I'd probably agree to it. Or maybe my brother-in-law is putting together a game for my little niece & nephew-I know I'm going to be playing second fiddle but that's fine, it'll probably be a blast. Or maybe a member of the group moved away years ago, but they're going to be in town for a few weeks and it'll be a chance to resolve some important part of their character's arc-sure, that could be a great time, and might even be satisfying for the other players. But the key here is informed consent. I'd deserve to know what I was being roped into. And even then, the DM shouldn't let the star player run roughshod over everyone else.

On the one with the DM's wife, I'm going to guess that OP's attempt to end her warcriming character and the Rogue's would have succeeded, had the wife not had impenetrable plot armor. The 'fall into an endless chasm' that didn't even knock her out, "forgetting" that there were Driders down there until it was pointed out, the Driders conveniently missing not one but TWO attacks on a should-have-been-stunned foe, and then give up, AND they made it back up the cliff and to town BEFORE the party could report her warcrimes? There's no way. OP didn't even have a chance to succeed, because the DM wasn't going to let it happen to his wife. Hopefully OP and the other players found good games to play in and move on with their lives, because that just sounds terrible.

Yeah, I noticed that the wife has main character syndrome, and is probably seriously cuntrolling off-line, too. I'd get everyone else to leave this power fantasy for the likely-narc leaning wife, and spread word of his 'campaign'

Might just be me, but if somebody does a rape scene in a session where nobody ahead of time told them they were fine with that I just leave outright. Some things I consider so obvious to ask if people are fine with that that I would consider it a conflict in play styles to big to cross.

The second story is just a train wreck. The DM had the guards assume that she was an assassin. Assassins don't go around saying, "You know what my profession is? I'm an assassin!"

from what i understand 5th edition paladins don't have to adhere to gods anymore -_- the existence of the universe gives them power so actual laws no and codes of conduct no longer apply since you're not actually representing anything other than pure raw chaos. With that in mind, I suppose it's fully feasible this could happen with a paladin since you are representing nothing solid other than randomness *shrug* still wouldn't allow this shit at my table, paladins have gods, you follow your patron or you're not a paladin, you're a fighter with bards mocking up your story as to why you fell from grace and become a laughing stock in every town until you atone.

The moment the character urinated on me, as a "greeting" because I was a druid, I would have my character look at the "paladin's" character and state "That is not how people from my grove greet people. We consider it rudeness, unsophisticated and crude. Next time, do not do that." As for the orc, I would have had the orc wake up, and smash his club on the wife's character, using her prone situation to send a message that she shouldn't anything like that. Okay, the moment she unnecessarily killed the first civilian, I would have immediately stripped her of her paladin magic, making the steed vanish. Also, nothing stopped her from bringing the OP to the circle so he could work to disable it.

About last story, while Mike does seem like a headstrong person, OP is assuming he's the kind of person to watch Game of Thrones in the company of kids which is not fair to assume, most people don't act the exact same way with everyone, especially adults to kids. Granted, he could probably do a terrible DM regardless of age he's DM'ing for but OP's implications are very clear.

If everyone consented beforehand or maybe the NSFW were less graphic then the DM being untrusted would be less reasonable.

Granted, he'll probably bring other stuff in poor taste to the kids as a garbage DM but that's besides the point. Also, children aren't made out of rice paper or glycerin, they're not gonna die for having this one bad experience with this one dude, and it doesn't seem the guy is abusive or anything, just weirdly dense. Also he's in an assistant position, which means he should be learning the ropes of how to deal with them, if he does something really stupid he's very likely getting the boot.

@@YouW00t I'm not saying this DM shouldn't be allowed near children or that children are fragile things that can't handle negativity, but the table who had nonconsensual acts forced on them being concerned about this playstyle potentially affecting children isn't unreasonable. It's like being concerned a spousal abuser will also abuse children, especially since forcing NSFW in a game could be considered verbal harassment regardless of an excuse like "he's just dense" or "it's just a game". And just because children aren't fragile doesn't mean people should be okay with the idea of them getting harassed. All OP did was mention personal concern, it's not like the school was told to fire the DM.

I hate that so many of these stories include a person identifying all the hallmarks of a toxic game, but being unwilling to leave because they: A) hope it will get better with time and they'll see sense. They only rarely do. B) don't want to leave because this is the only game they've got going at that time and they're not sure they'll be able to find another one soon C) they're too shy/anxious to confront them so they just sit there and endure the torture, hoping it will become fun at some point and again, it almost never does or D) it was fun once upon a time and the group was great, but then changes were made that started sucking the fun out of it and now they're just sticking around hoping things will go back to the way they were I can't even really blame them for any of it, because they're all valid reasons for staying. I know that the saying is: 'No DnD is better than bad DnD', and while that is true, no DnD when you really want to play some can be a very lonely experience. Walking away from a toxic game might sound like logical advice, but I can totally relate why it's a lot harder to do in practice. That first story made me unreasonably angry and if I had been a player in that one, if the DM flat out told me that 'I make these games for my wife's entertainment. If she's not having fun, why would I bother?' with a 'Why would anyone other than your wife want to join that, then? It's a co-op game. Group activity lies at its core. Don't run group games if you can't commit to the group.' Or, more likely, I would have walked away the second it became obvious it was a game of pandering to the spouse without a word. And again, I know that's the logical thing to do, but I understand why not everyone can just up and do it so easily. It's a game of commitment and it can be hard to walk away from, if you spent days/weeks getting hyped about it. It can make you endure a lot of the suffering that you shouldn't have to and that's a real shame. If anything, the lesson to take away from this is that you should appreciate the good games you do get a lot more when they happen and, if you're lucky and somewhat sensible, the good games should be far more frequent than the bad ones. I've been playing this game for a long time and I've had much more good games than bad ones. Especially ones where I had to walk away. Those have been blissfully rare, at least for me. Not non-existent, though. Anyway, appreciate what you have when you have it and good luck out there finding more games when yours isn't going so smoothly anymore.

Not going to lie, that story with the Dm only running for his wife and not caring about all of the other players shouldn't be running with other people then. there are games known as solo runs meant for just one player and DM and he should consider that from now on cause I would not handle that for long, she gives completely chaotic neutral to chaotic evil vibes with the orc scene to then just wanting to kill all of the villagers. I would try and off her character as well and the rogue for siding with her since they were sent to save the people. This next Monday we're gonna be starting a new Pathfinder 1E game and thankfully there wont be any of the "Dm Girlfriend" placment.

The core problem here is lack of informed consent. If you’re running a game which is centered around one player-whatever their relationship to you-you should disclose that fact to any & all other players before they join. Who knows, some players might think that’s fine (heck, I can imagine situations where I might be willing to go along with that for a while) but players deserve to make that choice for themselves. Tricking people into an arrangement like that is creepy and weird... and on top of that, it's not even likely to work.

Find steed doesn't say that the steed HAS to be a beast, just that the creature type will be changed to celestial, fey, or fiend, however it would make sense to gate summoning a Nightmare behind find GREATER steed, since the suggested options in that spell's description does include a Pegasus, which is what a Nightmare used to be before being tortured and having its wings torn off

It is a spirit adopting the physical traits and abilities of a creature you select. You are right that Find Steed requires the spirit take the form of a beast , but Find Greater Steed is under no such requirement."

Man, I’d suggest reporting that DM from the second story to the school. I mean, it’s possible that the games he runs at school are normal and don’t involve rape and stuff, but if he’s so cavalier about rape and genuinely doesn’t understand that a big Minotaur man picking someone up and hauling them upstairs to fuck them without their consent constitutes as rape, then I wouldn’t trust him to DM a game for minors. Better to warn the school and have it be for nothing than to just let it go while he’s actually pulling this kind of shit with kids.
