I love Dungeon Meshi's gradual descent into horror. It's not a series about cooking, it's a series about eating, and being eaten. And it's not like you have any right to be surprised when they pull Falin's bloodstained bones from the dragon; after all, the party has been killing, skinning, gutting, cooking, and eating creatures since the first chapter, and no detail was ever spared for the way those monsters' lives were untangled and used up for someone else's benefit. It disarms you by treating a human character with the same brutal pragmatism it treats the animals they eat. And if the dungeon itself is a body, with a digestive system and an immune system, monsters amd adventurers roaming around like bacteria in the gut...what does it eat?

If we desribe this story like gourmet... The chef serves us with one of a kind unique appetiser that grabbed your attention at the first place. Then between the waiting period of each main course dishes, we are served various light refreshment. On the end, the gourmet ended with a satisfying dessert.

Laios is one of my favorite representations of a character with autism as someone with a brother who is autistic. Laios has a weird and extreme obsession with monsters and fails at reading the room, but he isn’t dumb and he isn’t so obsessed that he stops caring for his party. The issue with how many stories portray autism is they make the character completely incapable of normal human interaction instead making the character come off as completely alien and incapable of having any sense of normality. Laios doesn’t feel alien he feels like a regular guy who happens to have autism.

I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and this video in general. I'd like to say one thing though: Having read the manga (half way into the anime I realized I wouldn't be happy to wait a year or two for second season, it's just too good), I would argue Dungeon Meshi very much is a philosophical master piece. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but be ready to let it hit you I'd say...

Thanks for the video! It's a really nice and smooth recollection of the series which gives the needed time to every aspect of the show. Good job! I absolutely adore Dungeon Meshi. From the meticulously well crafted dungeon itself to coffee-spitting humour (Laios siren song, you'll always be famous), from charming characters who feel very real and alive to the animation and style of the whole show, full of expression. Dungeon Meshi is a darling of mine, I am so happy this show exists!

I loved this concept so much that I kinda borrowed it. So my world I'm making has a dungeon similar to this one where there is an ecosystem, however the thing about the dungeon is you have a limited time to explore since after 3 days the dungeon will vanish for 2 years so there are a few settlements of people who live in the dungeon. It's a very small settlement and is not meant to be permanent with a few exceptions. The exceptions are the priests and priestesses of the god who made this dungeon. They call the dungeon home and live in several of the temples scattered throughout the dungeon. My character enters the dungeon to get a rare ingredient as he's an avid alchemist, unfortunately he and his family get trapped and have to survive. He's not too worried as his wife is a guard captain who taught the kids to handle weapons, his eldest daughter is a genius when it comes to magic, his twin sons are his helpers and his youngest daughter is a warrior like her mom. His extensive knowledge of plants helps them know which ones are poisonous and which ones aren't, and what properties they have. He enjoys the dungeon so much he wants to make a permanent village which the god of the dungeon is initially against. However after some convincing the god agrees to let 10 people live in the settlement. If one person wants to join another has to leave. He also makes sure monsters aren't over hunted, and anything harvested is replanted.

I watched a Delicious in Dungeon review from a channel called "Totoellini", because the video is titled "How Dungeon Meshi crafts realistic characters" and had the thumbnail "Peak Design". But that video is full of vulgarity and dehumanising the characters for the sake of laughs. It's emotionally disturbing as I love Delicious in Dungeon so much and care for its characters. Felt like that video almost ruined Dungeon Meshi for me. I don't get why people are becoming so insensitive these days and make everything sexualised/vulgar. But this video healed me.
