1:05:40 When Pablo Kuntz (the first person to voice Albert Wesker) played the original Resident Evil with his son, he said that he and his costars were living in Japan for a while before they got cast in the game. They got used to Japanese people speaking to them in oddly phrased English, which desensitized them when they were asked to read the infamously weird lines they recorded. I assume the same factor is at work here.

I grew up in USA, and had a Saturn. I saw this game featured in a magazine and was very excited for it. Alas it never released in my region. Later, I found out that there was a UK/Europe release. It took a while but i ended up modding my USA Saturn with a chip and modifying a copy of the UK/Europe release and eventually getting it to play on my Saturn. YES! Thank you for covering this. I remember popping this import into my Saturn back in the day and screaming with laughter at the voice acting. It was beyond amazing. The problem was no one else knew about it (other than my local friends), so for years, the only people who would understand the jokes around the voice lines in the game were those few friends and my brother. The first time Dubois spoke I had NO idea what was going on or what the voice actor was going for. Everyone needs to play this game. Also the final explanation of what the hell was happening at the end was all in Japanese. It took years until the English translation came out that I finally got the plot. And I was just as invested in Rambo’s well being as you were.

Half the voice cast has this as their only work, and the other half has a weird one extra role, outside of Ken who works in a lot of Gundam. John Mayor was Niko Bennex of Arc Rise Fantasia, Clancy Dawkins is Willy of Willy Combat, Ironfist is Alan Gado in Bloody Roar 2 and additional voices in Shenmue II, Danny Reynolds has the most recent role, an unnamed captain in the 2013 Rurouni Kenshin anime, and the biggest name is Mookie Carver, who not only also has additional Shenmue II voices, but is also the poor schmuck who voiced Astro Man and Duo in Megaman 8 and Zero in Megaman X4.

I recognized the name Kenji Kawai from his work on Folklore, one of the most underrated PS3 games, in my opinion. The music in that game is absolutely gorgeous. Some other credits I thought were interesting that I didn't know about before are Mob Psycho 100, that CGI Resident Evil movie from a few years ago, the old live-action Death Note adaptions, and fking Ringu! That's so cool. I also just wanted to say I really appreciate the way you fully caption your videos! They're some of the most accurate captions I've seen, and it's very considerate to think of how the captions can spoil something - they don't even seem to ever think of that for movies.

I have such a soft spot for this disaster. Although the channel has stopped uploading, Retsupurae did a hilarious riff of this game. My favorite actual fact is that NOBODY believes John about the monsters at first because it's April Fool's Day. That has to be some of the funniest shit I've ever heard. Fujiyama actually has a pretty interesting payoff! You find his corpse in his own Big Jim in the Connection Park while you're exploring underwater. Interacting with it tells you he probably got eaten to death by those annoying barracudas. I actually thought that was one of the more subtle and neat touches to the game. But oh my lord, the narm on this is so good, I love it. Agreed with you 100% on that. It's not an amazing game, but the voice acting (ESPECIALLY Dubois) sends me every time. Thanks for covering this, excellent job as always!

always found it easier to use tank controls for these games with static switching camera angles. Playing the RE1 remaster with "modern" controls had me pulling my hair out, switching back to previous angles or turning the wrong way and getting stuck at bad times.

4:03 RE2 never getting a Sega Saturn port is the reason why RESIDENT EVIL CODE: Veronica was made. Sega had asked Capcom for a port of RE2 on the Saturn: when they were told it wasn't feasible from a technical standpoint (the drop in quality would've been significant), Sega then asked for an exclusive RE game for their upcoming Dreamcast machine.
@MrAweeze
@MrAweeze 10 ай бұрын
Why would the drop in quality be significant? Isn't the port of RE considered to be (one of) the definitive version of the first game, which was made to run on the same hardware as 2? Or Maybe I'm misrembering and the port is ass lol

@@MrAweeze The Saturn port of RE1 had brighter colors and certain textures were better, but the poly count was lower and the shading was terrible. RE2 was a major leap forward, taking full advantage of the PS1's architecture: it's very unlikely the Saturn could've managed that. Given that the game was also ported to the N64 and PC (and later to the DC and GC), it's not that Capcom was being precious with it or anything: had they been able to do it properly, they would've done it. EDIT: here's a direct comparison. At 6:48 you can see that the shading on the Saturn was nonexistent. RE2 had a lot more shading to simulate dynamic lighting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn6XoWiHft6Uepo

SPOILERS!: I really like how it ends with you being the only survivor just like the original Alien movie as the only ending. Usually in horror games that center around a crew of people there's always a way to save some characters, if not everyone. I also liked how they had the love interest that you'd except to escape with, turn out to be the antagonist and origin of the infection. Really hyped for your Shadow Tower review. I love the King's Field games, so I'm interested to see what you have to say since I still haven't played these.

"The Navy Seals will come and seal the Navy area"(paraphrasing) The game sounds like a good idea hastily executed. John probably had PTSD. Mookie reminds me of the mechanic's assistant in CB's space shuttle episode a bit. DuBois? Sounds French so give him a girly voice. Clancy Dawkins? Tom Clancy plus Richard Dawkins? Selfish gene monster? I wonder if the Japanese VA is also terrible.

Tank controls were the best solution for games with fixed camera angles imo. If the controls were relative to the camera instead of the character it would be easy to mix up your inputs when the character moves past a camera angle transition.
@vinny-g6s
@vinny-g6s 10 ай бұрын
So, here's an interesting thing: the remake of the first Resident Evil in 2002 added an analog movement option that did exactly this, it moved the character in the direction relative to the camera. But when the transition happened, if you kept holding the analog to the same direction, the scene change would make the character keep moving in the direction they're facing. It was very clever in my opinion, although it takes a bit for us to get used to it, specially if you lean more into the classic tank controls.
@ericknorskr8568

only for horror games IMO. If the scares weren't directly tied in to the camera like those games there would be 0 problems. We've seen fixed camera angle games without this *quirk* since

@@vinny-g6s yeah I've played a couple of games with this control method and it feels clunkier to me... fixed camera angles are a thing of the past now though anyway so we probably won't need character-relative controls for any more 3rd-person games

The good old 90s survival horror nostalgia just gives me the warm fuzzies. There was a cheese factor in it that just doesn't exist anymore, which I miss terribly. Also: Dubois' voice. What. Tha.
