@neoman44262 ай бұрын
Weirdly, I think RAW since it doesn't specifically state CON Save to maintain Concentration you'd have Advantage on the DEX save versus Sleet Storm if you're Concentrating on an Extended spell. 5e version Sleet Storm triggered two saves, a DEX versus Prone and a standard CON versus losing Concentration, but in 5.5 they've rolled it into a single save where if you fail the DEX one you're both Prone and drop Concentration. "When a creature enters the Cylinder for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have the Prone condition and lose Concentration."

I was in a group once that had a fun moment with the potted plant. Mid-battle, our Wild Magic sorcerer surged and changed into a potted plant - which the DM declared was a cactus. Our fighter then picked up the cactus and used it as a club on the fight boss, doing bludgeoning damage to both the boss and the sorcerer but also ending the encounter.
@TRosati262 ай бұрын
Another amazing aspect of Subtle Spell is that it makes the spell un-Counterspell-able since Counterspell requires the caster to see the spell be cast. In an arcane battle, it can absolutely be a game changer! Not to mention subtle spell casting Counterspell! Works against an enemy caster, as well as out-of-battle stopping a strong spell without provoking the ire of the caster!
@M9Seradon2 ай бұрын
The wording on Counterspell specifies you have to see the enemy casting the spell use a component. While this doesn't stop you from using Subtle Spell to bypass Counterspell, it does mean there're more ways to overcome it, than standing outside of range, and just not having components (and Counterspell duels but those are way less likely now)

Thank you Kelly and Monty for your inspirating insight on sorcerers. It is very helpful. I am currently designing the background story of a drow aberrant mind sorceress who gets her mind power from a dying renegade mind flayer. It implants a tadpole in her head, just as what is suggested in Tasha’s book. However, there is a slight twist because the renegade mind flayer, who rebels against his hive because of his obsession with magic, found a way to infuse his life essence in tadpoles. It tries to preserve his mind and spirit by living inside her head! The mind flayer persuades the girl to accept their co-existing state by promising to share his power with her. In return, she has to grow strong with her mind power so that one day she can help the mind flayer tadpole to get out of her head and help it reincarnate into a new body. But the truth is, when the girl grows strong enough, the mind flayer will devour her brain, consume her power, complete the ceremorphosis and be reborn with his own mind, spirit and heightened power. The mind flayer is in fact using her for his own ends. This idea is inspired from “Parasyte: The Grey” in Netflix, where the protagonist shared a body with an intelligent parasite. Therefore, the drow girl will suffer from dual personality and occasionally shifted alignment, making it a very challenging role-playing experience.

I'm so happy that the Draconic Soul Sorcerer had been seriously updated in the 2024 rulebook. I played one in a Level 10 one-shot a while back. Add in a level of Warlock and you can get Armor of Agathys and EB. If you want to frontline and want to aoe with a cantrip you can use the agonizing blast warlock invocation on thunderclap to beef up it's damage.

at level 4 you do not have big concentration spell yet, and your +5 bonus to constitution do a great job at protecting the few suggestions and hold person you might cast. Personnally, I prefer ritual caster: you gain 2 ritual spell (find familiar and detect magic) at level 4 and at level 5 you gain a 3rd one (comprehend language) This allows you to free up some of your lower level spell prepared (and access to spell you couldn't even have otherwise) for more higher level spell. Being able to walk and have detect magic up all day long is awesome. Having your familiar triggering trap and exploring with the rogue is priceless (well it cost 10gp) But you know how when the rogue scout ahead if no one can talk telepathically it can be hard to know when to move forward and rejoin the rogue, or the rogue can be seeing a text or hearing enemy talk in a language he doesn't know. Well with your familiar the rogue can silently signal the familiar and you can see the signal and tell the party to move forward. The familiar can hear or watch that unknown language and you might know it (or you might also have comprehend language active) and know what they are saying/reading and as you gain level you gain more ritual (speak with animal and unseen servant being my 2 favorite choice) Warcaster at level 8 when you start having good concentration spell, and at level 9 you are getting hold monster so perfect timing. Telepathic, sure free cast of subtle detect thought can be very useful in a RP heavy campaign. If you are more in a dungeon delve, fey touch or shadow touch might be preferable. and if you really need to subtle cast detect thought you can do it with metamagic.

Great video. I just wanted to mention poison spray and its buffs for a possible damaging cantrip. I think the recent buffs to sorcery points and Poison Spray could actually make it a surprisingly good damaging cantrip. Poison spray now has a 30-foot range instead of 10-feet and is a spell attack instead of a Con Save (so it can crit). So now you can pair it with Spell Sniper, Transmuted Spell, or the Poisoner feat and get advantage with it using Innate Sorcery. 1 to 4d12 is pretty nice base damage for a spell attack that you can pretty easily get advantage with using. I've been digging through the PHB to prepare for my next character and sorcerer is sticking out as a class that looks really fun to play with the new rules.

Species selection - Halfling is incredibly strong if you’re using spells with attack rolls. Lucky (assuming 5.5 is like 5) lets you reroll 1 on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks (you suggested a skill focused background), and even initiative rolls. Lucky is huge. It’s stronger on a warlock with eldritch blast being individual attack rolls per blast. It’s still really mechanically strong on any class. So if you like scorching Ray with multiple separate attack rolls … you’ll naturally get those 1s 5% of the time. This lets you turn it into a hit or even a crit.

It works best with gold/silver or red dragons, but It's potentially hilarious either way. You're either busting down the door of a scaly tyrant and then browbeating them for leaving your mom high and dry, (before or after kicking their ass with your friends) or you're showing up to a "good" dragon and browbeating them for leaving without so much as a single gold of child support. Bonus points if it's a really high and mighty gold dragon who you get to embarrass in front of their similarly high and mighty gold dragon pals and maybe an archwizard or two.

A lot of your old videos, which I love, go into real depth for each spell or feature covered. These recent videos seem much more surface level. A concrete example is when you went over Transmute Spell. You did not talk about which damage types are included or anything. When you went over Careful Spell you just said it's what you choose to not blow up your friends. You used a similar level of detail when you went over the cantrips. I would really love to see you deep dive into these class features and spells more. Once again, I love you guys and love your videos. But, to me, the cursory glance at these features is not nearly as helpful as your in-depth thoughts about them. Thank you, and keep up the great work!

I appreciate your advice. Our tier ranking is always going to be an overview as we don’t want to make 2-3 hour videos. We migrated my character from 2014 to 2024. He is a blue dragonborn draconic sorcerer, with 3 levels in celestial warlock with a golden dragon as his patron, so he has a tiny golden pseudodragon familiar. He worships Bahamut, which since he's a dragon god of war and life, my character is mostly a blaster but also is the primary healer of the party. My character showed magic talent young, so his parents hired a wizard that had a particular interest in dragonborn to be his instructor. His intelligence score is low but has expertise in Arcana so he does well with that subject, but poorly on other intelligence based skills. I say he didn't learn how to write a spell book and isn't smart enough to study like a wizard, but he can naturally tap into the weave. His education is described as the "practical application of magic," primarily for combat. He is a magical warrior of honor but has a gambling problem and has at one point lost all of wealth, including his home in a bad game where the cards were not in his favor. He also can be impulsive and resort to violence quickly, though as the adventures have continued (started at level 1 and now level 14), he has learned to be a bit more patient after his impulsiveness has caused a few problems as he tries to be more diplomatic these days. He's also a bit naive and trusts people too quickly, giving away party secrets unknowingly to foes.

I'm playing a 1 level Wild Magic Sorcerer/12 level Arcane Trickster. At-will advantage only to trigger Wild Magic on a Reaction with Shield, Absorb Elements, or Silvery Barbs is fantastic action economy.

I'm currently playing my first sorcerer. Draconic bloodline after an ancestor was blessed by a bronze dragon as a reward for service. In Bill's case, he's 33 years old (human), so he's got an established life as a horse rancher and saddlemaker that has turned upside down due to powers suddenly manifesting at the magical age of 33. It's been really fun to roleplay someone who has relied on family and mundane weapons and tools discovering they can do a lot more. He's not happy about growing scales, however. It's weird, and they itched at first.

I'm looking for the Warlock videos; seems like they will be the last ones. I'm really curious for what roles it can be that it's not a blaster. However, this video is top notch: so many creative uses that I regret not having a Sorcerer active right now. As always, congratulations Dudes!

I'm glad that a misunderstanding of 2014 rules has now become a rule. Use Mind Sliver and then quicken Banishment. Technically doesn't work with the old rules because casting Mind Sliver first would lock you out of using a levelled spell due to weird rules with casting spells as a bonus action.

My biggest complaint with the 2024 Wild Magic Sorcerer: they adjusted the wild magic surge table so 42 no longer turns you into a potted plant. That was a perfectly good Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference they mucked up!

Wayfarer is also a particularly good Sorcerer background. The Scores are good (Dex, Wis, Cha), and you get Lucky like with Merchant, but the Skill Proficiencies (Insight, Stealth), and the Thieves Tool Proficiency are much better than the Merchant's Skills (Animal Handling, Persuasion) and it's focus on Navigator's Tools.

Stat array: yes 15+2 in charisma then grab 3 feat to boost your charisma (ritual casting(4) and fey/shadow touch(8), war magic (12) are great options) But then what's your 4th feat at level 16? since that 4th feat will give your a +1 to one stat you probably want that stat to be an odd number (in order to make it even) personally I love Resilience wisdom to prevent getting mind controlled by the enemies. Alternatively Mage slayer is a great choice for that "legendary resistance" But one will boost your dex and the other your wisdom Personally I go with 13 dex, that allows me to bump wisdom to 12 and when I grab mage slayer I can increase my dex to 14. And mage slayer not only great for that legendary resistance. That spell breaker feature, your fireball will cause all the spellcaster caught it it to roll at disvantage. Mind sliver cantrip will impose a 1d4 penalty don't he roll and that roll will be at disadvantage Alternatively, you could go with a 14+2 charisma and take 4 feat that boost charisma (both fey and shadow touch) and in this case you can go with both 14 dex and 12 wisdom. Now I know taking 4 feat to reach 20 charisma mean you are reaching it at level 16 instead of level 8, but if you play adventurer League you can rebuild your character anytime you want so grab +2charisma at level 4 and 8. At level 12 rebuild your level 4 feat for ritual casting and your new level 12 feat for warcaster. and at level 16 rebuild your level 8 feat for shadow touch and your level 16 feat for fey touch. If you don't play adventurer league you can ask your DM if you can do this. You focus your early training taking the stat bonus from the half feat, and your later level you take the feature part of the feats. But reaching level 16 with 19 charisma is not the end of the world neither, I mean you do get useful bonus in exchange (more ritual spell like find familiar, advantage on concentration, bonus spells etc... then the best Epic boon for a sorcerer is boon of fate. Once per fight imposing a 2d4 penalty on a creature who succeed your spell saving throws can be very powerfull Yes boon of recall seem cool, but it's basically 25% chance to regain a level 1-2-3-4 spell slot. it's not that great, might have been better if you always regained a spell slot level 1-2-3 or 4, but that 25% make it weak at best. For my second pick on a epic boon, Dimensional travel (assuming you are not a shadow sorcerer) would be my best choice a free teleport when you do a magic or attack action can be really good in tricky situation. 3rd choice (or second choice if shadow sorcerer) Truesight, having a spell level 6th always active is very powerful. Might be situational but those situation do occur often. Sure it doesn't let you see through the fog cloud/stinking cloud/cloudkill/incendiary cloud... but pretty much everything else is covered.

Sorcerers got a big time buff in this not-edition. They may be the best pure caster now. I also love Subtle Spell for any sorcerer. Or spell caster. I've taken Metamagic Adept more than once just to get that stealth casting.

I just recently find out about Aberant Mind Sorcerer ... imediately fell in love and totally wants to play one. Problem is, that in world where we play all Sorcerers are Wild Magic. My curent character is Transmutation Wizard / GOO Warlock, who dont realize that he have a patron ... Campaign is happening "16y in the past" ... I just recently come up with a story, where my character would like to (after the campaign will finish, and IF he survive) visit his previous self home to see his family again (tragic backstory, you know the stuff) ... wich would lead to his patron noticing his child and "marking" her, in order to try spread her influence over whole family. Wich would lead in several generation ... to Aberant Mind Sorcerer, who got his abilities from this "mark". So far my DM said that he loves the story, and that he will think about it. Fingers crossed! ^_^ //edit: I wrote this comment before i hear the video ... now im at 21:50 ... and just grining like mad. :D

The other interesting change on the Wild Magic Surge Feature; Whether a Wild Magic Surge happens at all is _entirely_ in control of the player: 2014: "Once per turn, *the DM can have you roll* a d20 immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher...." 2024: "Once per turn, *you can roll* 1d20 immediately after you cast a Sorcerer spell with a spell slot..."

A few people have already mentioned it but, Draconic Dwarf Sorcerer with the Tough feat to be a very chonky lad. And if you want to get fancy with the flavor, instead of being tied to a dragon, maybe you've been endowed with the might of the forge. Instead of metallic scales it's just metallic skin making you that much harder to hurt.

One thing worth mentioning when it comes to creating spell slots with sorcery points, you can create a spell slot of a level that you would normally not have access to. A level 7 Sorcerer only has level 4 spell slots. But if you expend all 7 of your Sorcery points you can create a 5th level spell slot and use it to upcast your other spells. Is it worth it? Probably not. Is it cool? Hell yeah. 5th level Fireball!
@daniellundberg92252 ай бұрын
That was true in the 2014 version of the rules but the loophole was closed in 2024, as the table now includes a minimum Sorcerer level to create a specific slot. In a sense one could argue the Innate Sorcery feature (as well as metamagic) now represents 'overloading' spells the way creating higher level slots previously did.

TLDR: Give your Sorcerer the opposite of the stereotypical D&D family. You don't just have a loving parent waiting back home, you have a network of aunts, uncles, cousins, etc that all lead back to the progenitor of your Sorcerous bloodline. You're the D&D equivalent of a Rockefeller, or a Kennedy. You don't have to be nobles or royalty, but you come from a LARGE family of powerful spell casters, and they're spread out all over the world, so you never know when one might pop up or come in handy. Make as many NPC cousins as you can and don't be afraid to ask family for help. Encourage your DM to make their own NPCs in your bloodline, ones you may have heard stories of but never actually met. And when the shit hits the fan, go ask grandpa to mobilize an army on your behalf (this backstory does not guarantee you an army, your DM could rule that your ancient dragon ancestor and many of your cousins are completely neutral to whatever situation you have gotten yourself into, after all, it makes for a better story if you figure it out for yourself). My first ever character was a Draconic Sorcerer in Pathfinder, and while that game didn't last long, I have since built on that character's lore and expanded it to suit any Draconic Sorcerer I ever play in the future (or to modify it to fit whatever bloodline I choose). The short version is that my character, named Ego, was originally a vain Golden Dragon who was punished for his arrogance (thinking that he was close in stature to Bahamut) by being forced to reincarnate as the humanoid descendant of a Copper Dragon and live out a life sentence in order to teach him humility. The bright side of this was that Ego's ancestor was very much alive and well, and actively involved with his ever growing family. This dragon moonlights as a Bard named called Copper Tongue, CT for short, and traveled the world doing heroic quests with different parties, then going to taverns and sharing those tales with anyone who would listen. CT also had a tendency to spread the love around so-to-speak, and so often had children with magical gifts. Any time a child was born with magical powers, he'd offer to relocate them and their mothers to his own private estates, basically a small city bought from the spoils of an ancient dragon spending his lifetime adventuring, and there the children would be taught to use their magic, taught to fight, and many were encouraged to go out as adventurers themselves so long as they came back with good stories. But the best part about this familial city was that even though the mothers and their children were all different races, as Sorcerers born from this one dragon they all considered themselves like siblings, though they called each other cousins more-so to avoid the confusion of other races asking how an Elf and a Dwarf could be brothers, and then of course there were also descendants of the dragon's children who were all cousins, so cousins just became the default term. Anyway, this massive family structure not only gave my character a network of cousins to call upon when the party needed aid (the absolute pinnacle of "I know a guy"), it also provided me with the most widely applicable source of NPCs and alternative characters for future Sorcerers. If Ego died, I didn't need to worry too much about making a new character, I'd just create a new cousin, change the race, redo anything that needed to be changed, give them a unique personality and a slightly more specific backstory, but then I could keep the stats, the spells, and even have that character inherit Ego's equipment and belongings, then have them choose to stay with the party as a means of honoring Ego and bringing his stories back to the family completed. Of course we didn't play enough to ever need that, but I had it ready if we did. Since then I haven't gotten to play, and if I did I'll probably play a different class, but if I ever play another Sorcerer, there will always be a large magical family in their background.

Love this video! Ty! ♥️ I felt the need to take Magic Initiate for my origin feat on my Wild Magic Sorc. I already have the ability to change luck but am a bit short on spells. I also forgo Warcaster on this build as proficiency with Con and all my luck abilities feel like more than enough considering the Extend MM. With my Mag Initiate feat, should I take Shield, to have a spell slot free cast once a day, or Find Familiar, which is not accessible to me as a Sorc? I’m not sold on the utility of a familiar- am I wrong on that? ♥️
