Netheril is an interesting empire as are its archmages. I will stop saying my ancient archmages are OP and now say they are boring. Netheril would have a hard time translating to Loom of Magus in the way of spell levels. In Loom of Magus, all spells above level 9 in power are level 10... the only issue is cost and difficulty. Like the 10th level spell Wish II (aka Gods' Wish, Genie High Wish, Advanced Wish, Break Reality, etc) can do just about anything... it's a negotiation between DM and player. It has the negative side-effects and other costs of Wish (9th level) only the negotiation is what else the player is willing to pay up, going from a mere double negative of Wish to sacrificing his life to having other spellcasters cast Wish or Wish II in the same spellcasting, etc. Also, like other 10th level spells (I use a MP system), more MP's may be required to attain the effect. Generally, wizards cast spells costing 1 MP per spell level. Level 10 spells usually cost 10 MP but they can be higher.

Considering their penchant for conflict, I find it the utter lack of martial magics to be quite telling of the Netherese perspective. Spells in the vein of Haste, Tenser's Transformation, Steel Wind Strike, either of the thunder or fire blade cantrips, and many other defensive, offensive, and augmentative spells would have likely proved enormous boons in their continued conflicts. Even the Shield spell (a remarkably simple and obvious idea), if I recall correctly, was not made for combat against martial opponents, but rather invented by Karsus as a defense against another of his spells, Magic Missile. Considering their greatly extended lifespan, the Netherese wizards certainly had sufficient time to develop martial and physical prowess, and one certainly can't question the efficacy of the combination- particularly for a society so perpetually steeped in combat- when considering the astounding feats of both the Gish and the elven Bladesingers, neither of which could match both the potential longevity and intensity of the Netherese practice. One can only conclude then, that they must have either been too caught up in the continual competition for status to focus on such a practical concern, or that they viewed such forms of combat as being beneath them. I suspect some potent combination of the two. How many great mages saw their time cut short, or even ended before it had truly begun at all, because of that blind spot? One can only wonder.
@AJPickett4 жыл бұрын
Oh you are going to like the next Netheril video, I'll be talking about General Matick (who invented Magic Missile, Shield and Armor) as well as many other wizards, plus, you've inspired me to talk about the martial traditions of the Empire, they were pretty adept warriors even before they started producing enchanted arms and armor, and teaching warriors their cantras (early version of cantrips).
@drakeford48604 жыл бұрын
@@AJPickett Ah, I see I was indeed incorrect regarding Magic Missile and Shield. Well, that's what I get for working from memory. A cursory search on Matick is finding serious parallels between Matick and Leonidas- particularly regarding Thermopylae. I'll not look much further into it myself, but consider me thoroughly interested in the topic and excited for the impending history lesson. Actually, now that I've made that connection, the Netherese seem to be very heavily influenced by the Greeks in general. I'm certainly very interested in the martial traditions of the empire as well. I know you referenced the soldiers multiple times, and it seems obvious that such a nation would have need of them, but they also seem very far removed from the magocracy above them- or rather, the magocracy seems removed from the martials below them. I'm really quite curious to see whether Matick was the sort of outlier I suspect in that regard, or more indicative of the Nethrese perspective as a whole.
@AJPickett4 жыл бұрын
@@drakeford4860 You are right on target, yes there are very clear parallels between the Greek city-states and the early civilization of Netheril, the strong martial tradition of militias clashed a lot with the rise of the mage lords and the loss of democracy. And where there is conflict, there is STORY! PLOT! ADVENTURE!
@DCdabest4 жыл бұрын
I think that the answer to that is that The Netherese Arcanists didn't employ magic on an interpersonal combat level but instead as weapons of mass destruction. They don't hit you with a lightening bolt. They summon a thunderstorm to destroy your village and blow down your castle. Then they send in the troops to clean up. Shock and Awe tactics. Interpersonal fighting was down with magic weapons and armour if neeeded.
@roberthill58054 жыл бұрын
I was always curious about the ancient races and empires that focused on inventing new spells. None of them really had areas/caverns/planes to research and test spells/magics/items. They fact that you could tear mountains from the ground, meteors from the sky, clouds of death, and so on would make you realize that magic is absurdly dangerous. A single mess up could lead to devastating consequences (like a meteor hitting a city), so you may want to keep your magic away from your population centers and where you store all your magic.

@@AJPickett Yeah, and this is one of those things of me trying to insert logic and reasoning on something that is clearly a narrative choice to show their arrogance. But this is like when the US started to find out just how devastating Nukes were so they started testing them in the middle of a desert or on some island. There is the assumption that once someone accidentally takes out their own city with a meteor that the arch mages would say, "we may want to start instituting safety regulations. "

Delayed Blast Fireball was invented before Fireball?
@kenawyn Жыл бұрын
Consider the rules of the setting: - Arcane Age uses a modified 2nd edition AD&D ruleset. - Arcanists get d4 Hp per level up to level 10, which is modified by constitution (max +2 per level). After level 10 they only gain +1 hp every additional level. - Noanar - a level 21 arcanist, who invented Fireball - only had 55 HP (his stats from the arcane age book - Str 16; Dex 15; Con 16; Int 19; Wis 12; Cha 10). - Finally Mystra's restrictions on magic were not yet in effect, which means spells improve with level indefinitely. Noanar (level 21 arcanist) casting Fireball or Delayed Fireball would deal 21d6 damage (d6 * level). Remember, as an arcanist you will not accept healing magic from priests. When developing spells that can kill you or hurt you real bad you will be extra careful. With this in mind creating an explosion spell with a timer attached makes perfect sense to me.

Something like that would undoubtedly get the attention of the current gods of magic.
