The only Imp i can remember is from the book "Canticle" It was a weak demon or devil it was lawful evil and had bat wings it had invisibility and poison. Their biggest use was mostly that they could be tamed in a sense , and could speak persuade higher ups to cross the mortal plane. An Imp has so many abilities it would be an interesting player character.

Our DM had us do absurd tasks for some imps/mephits. We just called them pokemon cuz they were brightly colored and elemental shenanigans ensured. They wanted stuff like 1000 pounds of salt ,corn, etc. We gained a feat from our correspònding elemental imp that Aided us in combat. Was funny

Funny that I should watch the video on Avernus before this. The ruling Pit Fiend is female, a shock to those who see all Devils as male. In our campaign we have a Halfling Warlock who has a female Imp named Noir. A femme fatale and notorious scamp.

So, a bit of a story of the imp in our campaign, who we named Freddy. So, pretty far back, we were experimenting with a magic portal we were tasked with monitoring, and we accidentally got sucked into it, getting plopped into the feywild. There, our Eldritch Knight (or maybe it was our Wild Mage) found an imp just sitting on a tree branch, seemingly lost. And they decided to take him along, and named him. He was well-behaved, and mostly like to just vibe. He also helped around with scouting, and our Wild Mage took good care of him. However, things recently took a turn for the worse, when our Ranger was kidnapped by his pirate dad, and a number of us got captured. Freddy nearly died, but managed to escape to tell the others. And a jailbreak was planned. My Samurai, our Wild Mage, and Gunslinger were being tortured to persuade the Ranger to serve his dad with an obedience collar. And our Gunslinger was being tortured with a little gas burner going into his mouth. However, our other friends managed to break in, and get to us. In the ensuing fight, however... the Wild Magic roulette... led to one of our NPC allies having a delayed fireball cast on himself, and exploded. Fireball + Gas Tank + Gunslinger's spare powder kegs ...You can guess what happened from there. Those that didn't instantly die, were knocked out, and forced to make death saves... ...All except Freddy--who took no damage from the blast, or the fire, and simply watched as all of his friends were practically disintegrated. And all that physically remained of our Wild Mage was his red-hot beak. Some time back, the Kenku's wild magic turned his beak into iron. By some absurd miracle, the only ones of us that got back up, after all of this...was me, Ranger, and the pirate lord. All of us were at low HP, and there was something flying in the distance. Ranger: "This... doesn't have to be a place...for any more of us to die..." ???: "But it will be." In an instant, a thin beam of something shot from the creature, and impaled the pirate lord right through his chest--killing him instantly. Upon getting a better look at this creature, we could tell it was a devil. Freddy. But he wasn't just an imp anymore. He had changed into...something else. He flew off, and we got off the pirate's island. And that's pretty much where last night's session left us.

The sorcerer in my group rolled a nat 20 persuasion on some random imp he met in Avernus getting an imp to sign a contract to become his familiar. He is NG alligned, so I am sure the imp will take great pleasure in slowly and subtly encouraging him to do morally grey acts every now and then. DEALING WITH IMPS I only go by AD&D2e and 3.0e did not care for 4e and no money to bother with 5e. 1.) The Imp 3.5e HD: 3d8(13hp) ; advancement: 4-6 hd CR:2 ECL:5th. Ac: 18/ 15 touch(+2siz "2ft tall",+3dex,+3natural.) Ability Scores: dex17" size bonus",wis12, str/con/int/cha:10 Skills: hide+15, listen+5,move silently+5, search+5,spellcraft+5, spot+5 2.) Arch type concepts a.) three levels of rogue: 6 ranks in Bluff,"thieving lair." b.) three levels of wizard, " cantrip caster" c.) No class level restrictions , they gain Hat of Disguise using Alterself spell to pass themselves off as halflings and gnomes. i.) Use ability score level increase to improve core ability score of the magic user class. "average imp." ii.) Roll ability scores as normal, then add size modifiers. d.) Impish Pain in the A$$ i.) rogue3rd/fighter2nd/ranger2nd/sorcerer2nd/wizard3rd.CR:14; ECL: 17th BAB+12 "whole bunch of self made magic items" toys to corrupt mortal children.

So, what form is our imp hoping to promote to? It might depend upon the DM, the edition, or other such stuff, but I sort of wish there was a more fleshed out, detailed "table" of what they can promote to, who can promote them, and what the cost is. I don't know if Asmodeus can just pick up a Lemure, and say "be a Pit Fiend for me, would you?", and what resource the Lord of Nessus must spend to make them, or if Glasya can do it, as a fellow Archdevil, or if "experience" will just forge a Devil up the hierarchy? Since we have Imps, we also have Quasits, but how do they work? I like to imagine imps do because Lawful; they like hierarchy, and they serve a greater master, probably under an infernal contract, but what about their chaotic counterparts? Why do they "serve"? How does it work without a contract? Who can give them out? I have a bit of a thing for Drow, at the moment, but I don't know if Lolth has quasits under Her sway, that my Drow Mage might get as a familiar? I'd rather have that then say a spider, as it does more, and could probably even take spider form, if I wanted, bur I don't know if that fits, and how you persuade that critter to serve, when Chaos is often all about freedom, and some self-determination. I also assume they, like their imp cousins, want to promote, but I don't see as much how they do, since Demon Princes might have less motivation to spend the energy on another being. I know they aren't all Chaotic Stupid, and beings like Graz'zt, and Fraz Urb'luu have full cults, with ranks, "perks", and the like, but I guess my mind more readily conceives a Lawful Evil mindset, then a Chaotic Evil one.

That Imp has had that same form for around 4000 years, he is loathe to receive power from other devils as he finds it both oppressive and deeply invasive. He said the transformation was agony, a new body grows out of this organ in a devil body, it splits the old body asunder as it grows to full size suddenly. The Imp said to be a devil is to forget what true freedom ever felt like.
