Um, actually, Seven League Boots (AKA 7 League Boots) are a spin on boots of speed, which is a spin on magical boots. Aside from existing in many tales and folklore, I personally know them from Howl's Moving Castle. Although "studded leather" is now widely understood not to have historically existed, it's a misapprehension that it was invented for D&D. It actually dates to questionable Victorian scholarship, which persisted well into the 20th century. For example, the National/Collier's Encyclopedia's article on historical armor would have read, "Arms, legs, and feet were cased in steel or studded leather." It was also in Britannica, but I believe Britannica's article was revised before the '60s. Gygax's first recorded use of "studded leather" (in a 1971 article) notably describes it as armoring the legs. As such, it was added to the armor tables for Chainmail and, from there, made its way into D&D.

@hqueso
@hqueso 2 жыл бұрын
@@thetruth-hl7ct Sorry for not replying immediately, but I had to wait until my hysterical laughter diminished to the point I could type again. THAC0 was neither brilliant nor a system. It was a patch slapped on the inherently inelegant and unwieldy system in 1st ed, which for all its innovation was a mess of conflicting and contradicting systems. Hit tables were clunky, but a streamlined version had the problem of attack rolls getting better as they go up and AC getting better as it went down. A full reimagining in which these were complementary was beyond the scope of 2E, which was essentially a reorganization of 1E with some things smoothed out and a lot of supplemental material worked in. So they applied a hot-fix in THAC0 to remove the need for tables without rehashing the whole system. Those of us that have experience with 1E before 2E came out think of it as elegant, because 1E was such a mess. A brilliant mess, but a mess nonetheless. We experienced THAC0 being wildly better than the old tables. To those that joined the game in later editions that had a more unified and consistent system, it seems confusing and unnecessary. This has nothing to do with millennials or stupidity; it's merely the fact that we experienced the transition first hand, while others came in with a more advanced system. THAC0 was the bungie cord you use to hold your car's busted trunk shut until you can get a permanent solution. Someone who's never had to deal with a busted trunk may not understand that it's vital for getting things done until you can get things fixed, but that doesn't make them stupid for realizing a functioning trunk is better than a bungie cord. THAC0 was brilliant and made play easier for everyone at the time. But is was a patch. The real fix came in later editions.

Well no, the Ring of Bureaucratic Wizardry was a cursed item. You also, of course, can't remove it. Like many cursed magic items, it's a joke at the player's expense.
