Always Board Never Boring plays adventure one (level one), The Goblin Bandits, from the Dungeons and Dragons Fantasy Adventure Board Game, a classic D&D themed dungeon crawler released by Parker (Hasbro) in 2003. It was really enjoyable for me, surprisingly so. I would definitely like some more, even though I have never owned this game (or known much about it). It looks like a step up from Heroquest with tougher monsters, a bit more strategy, and losing a hero on the first mission, and a few steps down from Advanced Heroquest in complexity. Seems to me to be right in the middle of those two games.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

That's a pretty fair assessment. It has more going on than HeroQuest (although you lose secret doors, collecting money, and buying resources from the shop), and the monster are certainly tougher. Later on some have ranged attacks and special abilities like bypassing hero armour or paralysing their targets. Admittedly, I was stupid losing the rogue. I relied on killing one of the goblins with the wizard, and when that didn't happen the writing was on the wall. Personally, I think it's still quite a long step to get to Advanced HeroQuest, but this is certainly a stepping stone on the way to it.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Right on! The push your luck mechanics with the dice are really neat! The only thing that's missing is more terrain to make the rooms a bit more varied strategically, otherwise, it's pretty cool!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
The game includes pillars and trees, and in later scenarios they are used to change the layouts of rooms a bit (pillars lined up to create walls, and that sort of thing). Also, some of the room shapes are quite interesting and add a lot. One room is a ring completely encircling another room, for example. A lot of the strategy comes from preventing the heroes making double attacks (standing next to ranged units or keeping a distance from Regdar, forcing them to spend some actions on movement). Also, later on the enemies get ranged attacks and special abilities too.

@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
My dice rolling didn't help. The goblins can roll a maximum of four hits, which they did with unnerving regularity. Meanwhile at the start of level 1, each character has the potential for two attacks, each of which can cause a maximum of one wound, except in the case of Regdar, which is a maximum of two wounds. So with a maximum of eight attacks per turn (max 10 damage) but generally at least four attacks per turn (maximum five damage), you should be able to handle one goblin in a turn. Regdar now has a new hammer which guarantees a minimum of two damage per hit but which can potentially kill a goblin with a single strike, so already they are much better equipped to handle the next dungeon. The most fun aspect is the positioning. Because heroes can take two attacks if they want, the DM has to concentrate on where to put the monsters. You want to make sure you are standing adjacent to ranged units, forcing them to spend one action to move first. Similarly, you should never stand next to Regdar, as you want to force him to waste an attack getting into range. Simple stuff, but it does add extra stuff to think about, especially when combined with areas that are much larger than you get in games like HeroQuest allowing for much more mobility.

Hi. Enjoyed your play through (as usual) and was surprised at how much I liked this game. I am tempted to get heroquest for my son and myself to play together but I'm not sure if it is a little too simple. There seems more to this game which would get him thinking and keep his attention (love the randomness of activations). The lack of secret doors is an unforgivable oversight from the game makers though, who would go in a dungeon if there wasn't a chance of a secret door I ask you 😉 Hopefully you do a second play through to showcase more of the gameplay. You said in a comment below that it would depend on the number of views, I get that, some games are a little niche though and the fact this didn't get released in the states will affect the number of views potentially. Have you played this one with your kids and of so were they a fan versus HQ? Great content as usual, thanks and look forward to more
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. There's definitely a bit more going on in this game. There are a lot more weapons, spells and items, and as they all come from random loot drops you aren't always immediately kitting out your heroes with exactly the same stuff from a store. Enemies are more diverse, and include ranged enemies and some with special abilities (which didn't really happy in HeroQuest until the expansions). And of course, the activation system allowing for double move or double attack, along with the bigger rooms and a lot more ranged attack options and special abilities, means combat is a bit more strategic. On the down side, the game is a little slower to play, you don't get the same sense of exploration, you miss out on the dungeon scenery, and you don't get to collect and spend gold. And of course, no secret doors. The levels in D&D are generally not as interesting either - some HeroQuest levels are so interesting and inventive while the D&D ones are a bit more straightforward. Ultimately, HeroQuest is still my pick of the two. There would actually be no reason you couldn't add D&D's initiative system to HeroQuest. Use it exactly the same way, resetting the initiative at each doorway.

Great videos about a fantastic game! On 22:58 you say Mialee will need to perform a Changing an Item action in her next turn in order to get to use her new item but on the Player’s Guide, on page 8, in section “Item Cards” it is said: “If you pick up an Item, you may bring it straight in to ‘use’ if you are able.”. So that could have been for free.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
You can put it straight into use "if you are able." Mialee only has one active weapon slot, and she was already armed with a bow, so when she picked up the new bow it had to go in her knapsack. To take something out of your knapsack and put it into an active slot requires an action. Later on Regdar found a hammer. He has two active weapon slots and only had one weapon equipped at the time (his sword), so he was able to immediately put the new hammer into the second active slot. Hope that makes sense.
@nalumtei5349

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring good point. In the Spanish version the wording says something like “If you pick up an Item, you may bring it straight in to ‘use’ if you qualify for its use.”. So maybe I have been playing wrongly all this time…
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. It's debatable isn't it? "If you are able" could just mean if it's something you can use (like a wizard with a spell), but I always read it as meaning if you are eligible and have a free slot. However, thinking about it even more, if your knapsack and hands are all full and you open a chest you are allowed to drop something to take the new weapon and there's nothing stopping you from dropping something from your hands, in which case you would automatically equip the new weapon... but then, maybe that's a payoff for discarding something completely. There's an argument for both cases. I don't know, maybe I will let my heroes swap in weapons they find straight away just to keep things moving along a little faster.

Personally speaking, this type of game (with its simplicity in being learned and simple to play) should come back a bit ... please don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely not criticizing modern games, which have just as much to bring huge revolutions both in the stories, in the mechanics and in the many things to do, and this is a beautiful thing absolutely nothing to say about it ... but to bring something like this with few rules but at the same time a beautiful story and that nice hour in company having fun I admit that it lacks a bit. Honestly, something to have fun doesn't have to be complicated, in fact sometimes it's nice to play something simple especially when you don't have much time to dedicate to it 😊👍 Anyway, sorry for my long comment thank you very much for this video of yours it was a lot of fun and made me really want to play it even if unfortunately I don't have it 🤣😋
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, and I totally agree. I've always said I prefer the simpler rules sets that allow you to focus on the game and the story rather than constantly double checking what the rules say. I was very pleased when HeroQuest came back, as that is one of the best examples of a really straightforward but fun game. There are still companies that are making games that are nice and straightforward but offer a lot of fun in an hour or so. Ravensburger games such as Horrified and Fate of the Nostromo (both featured on the channel) are good examples, and I think the Dungeons and Dragons adventure system games like Castle Ravenloft have a really straightforward and fast-playing design. Hasbro also released Adventure Begins last year, which is a simple gam to introduce people to D&D. I haven't played it so I can't comment on if it's fun or not. And of course, the Games Workshop bookshelf games like Labyrinth of the Necrons are good options, if they are available in your territory.

Not a bad game overall. Some of the rules were surprising, especially the end condition, I think HQ got that better with the game ending upon exit of dungeon. Without a doubt though, HQ is more "3D" with furniture instead of tokens. HQ's little treasure chests look so much better. The fact that the denizens are not explicitly placed, quite unusual as a long time HQ player, but rules are only "guides", so one can really do whatever they like anyway.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
The initiative order changing every time you open a door, and being able to choose where monsters go (most of the time - there are exceptions) is really neat. Placing monsters gives the DM something extra to think about. It actually minimises the issue in HeroQuest of all the heroes gathering around a door and timing when they open it for maximum benefit, because as soon as the door opens the initiative changes, and the monsters may get to activate first anyway. I prefer the mission ending when the heroes choose to leave, as in HeroQuest, but I understand why they did it here. The chests all have a much higher chance of including something really useful, so they needed to add something to force you to work for them. I believe Goomhaven has a similar situation where treasure vanishes after fights, forcing you to work harder to get it. It's definitely a bit gamey, though. I think of the chest tokens more as "locations of interest" rather than chests, as sometimes there are eight or ten of them in a single room. HeroQuest's 3D chests are cooler, but as you have to stand on the chests to open them in D&D, and because there are so many of them, again, I understand why they went with tokens. Interestingly, in the Eternal Winter expansion they added more 3D terrain with rules for going up and down between levels.
@DavidGreen_au
@DavidGreen_au 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting point about the initiative. That would be an interesting rule to port to HQ. The poor old denizens always act last, unless it was a "Wandering Monster" event, so that would "mix it up" a bit for flavour. And the cards doled out to assign is certainly a quick mechanism which shouldn't slow down play. In HQ, chests were just furniture, part of the room, so a search for Traps or for Treasure encompassed them as well so yes, a player could not occupy the same space as a furniture item. But I always played that each furniture item was separate from the room, being searchable and could yield treasure and traps. However, I wouldn't want Hasbro getting distracted by D&D just yet. I want them to release more HQ content. I want the Elf pack, or better yet, some new content! Then they can go play with D&D. Now in hindsight, I wish I had picked up the additional D&D module when it came out. I have heard of Gloomhaven, but not paid much attention to it yet. But not too much, I've already got too much financial investment tied up in games I haven't even seen yet.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in HeroQuest one treasure search does the entire room (which I actually prefer to keep the game brisk). I wasn't suggesting anyone stands on chests in HeroQuest. My point was, in this D&D game you have to stand on the treasure tokens to search them, which is why it made sense for them to use tokens even though little 3D chests would look better. If you've been watching my HeroQuest coverage you probably know that they have already shown that the barbarian quest pack is on the way, and they used artwork for the elf that I believe strongly implies the elf pack is next on the agenda.

It's a very bad pun. Isn't there also a Horizont Alley and a few other alleys with pun names? I have to say, it may have seemed like the fighter was putting out zero damage, but against these goblins he is always guaranteed to inflict one wound with his original broadsword (there are no blanks on the orange). He was just making a very concerted effort to put in the minimal effort with every swing! Now he rolls double orange, he is guaranteed a minimum of two hits per swing. That means he could potentially (although on evidence here won't) cause enough wounds in a single swing to kill a goblin, and if he ever gets two swings at the same goblin he is guaranteed to kill it. Something else for the DM to think about when positioning enemies.

You know, I nearly did swap in the HeroQuest doors, but I really do like to show the games as they are. The little tokens and 3D terrain elements in the D&D game really do look like a poor effort against (any version of) HeroQuest.

A pinch of game testing and balancing would really help

What makes you think it isn’t balanced? It’s actually got a really nice scaling challenge to it.

Who named these Trolls Goblins?

Ha. They gave me a run for my money, although I think I was making it look like harder work than it really is at times. Once the real trolls turn up this game gets incredibly tough! I must do some more playthroughs. I've been meaning to do some with the expansions.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring It was fun to watch. I used to own this game to salvage the parts for... well, we all know for what, but this game does have quite some merit on its own. I'd watch it.

There are some really good ideas in it. I like how initiative changes every time you open a door. Thanks for watching, and for the feedback.

I played the first two adventures as the DM and i got absolutely smashed. Anybody got ideas about rules to make the game more balanced cause i think heroes are far too advantaged
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
I actually think this game can be pretty tough on the heroes. The monsters shouldn't be getting smashed that easily. However, remember that the first few missions will be a little easier on the heroes, and things will ramp up. If you've only played the first two quests, you may find that as you progress things start to swing more in your favour. Before changing rules, it's worth double checking you have all the rules straight and you aren't accidentally overpowering the heroes in some way, and also, think if there are other tactics you can use. If you are still struggling, check out Board Game Geek. You can often find variant rules there that you might enjoy more.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I think there was a star alignment for the heroes when i played. They got amazing items right from the start and the monsters were rolling badly. Plus they were extremly cautious around doors forcing me to always skip a turn before they would enter the room. I'm thinking to add a reinforcement mechanism. At least for the first adventures
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
@@kimok4716 It's possible you may be doing a few things incorrectly. Firstly, heroes shouldn't be able to get anything too amazing in the first adventures. You only include level 1 items in the treasure deck. Also, there is no point loitering around a closed door. Every time the heroes open a door you reshuffle and deal the initiative cards, so you don't know what order anything is going to activate in and there is a chance the monsters will go first. You may be playing those things correctly anyway and you've just had some terrible luck, but thought it was worth pointing it out just in case.

Goblin healing? Ability of the Thief for the +1 Bonus? Why u add a difficult when no is needed? Rarly seen such wrong played D&D for no neccesary.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
No goblins healed in this game (it's not even something they can do), and I never really had much opportunity to use the rogue's sneak ability, which becomes more useful when there are a lot of enemies on the board. I didn't change any rules to increase the difficulty, and there are no obvious rules errors in this playthrough to my knowledge; but there are a couple of times when I didn’t take full advantage of special abilities. But then, I always think it's reasonable to expect a few sub-optimal moves in playthroughs like this. Keep in mind, I'm not only controlling all four heroes, I'm also controlling the monsters, trying to get all the shots I need, trying to keep the game fast and fun, and narrating everything I do. It's a lot to think about all at once.
