Yesterday I finally decided to jump from Premiere into DaVinci , so today was the first day and i dedicated it entirely to absorbing as much info as i could to have an understanding of it…From basic tutorials, to more advanced ones to see what features DaVinci has , to reading comments, people with different opinions and bringing up topics , looking up those topics , etc. Now 15 hours later back at your video and definitely having a much easier time folowing through the process, still overwhelmed but excited to get to work and keep going. Nodes give you the ability for a lot more than just organization, they also allow you to build off of your previous work. So if I change the luminance levels in one node, I can go to the next node and work from the new luminance levels instead of guessing. Then on top of that there are different types of nodes for different jobs. Basically saying “can’t you just use basic saturation” is like asking a painter why they have different brushes, canvas materials, tools, and techniques instead of just always painting on paper with the same brush in only red.

Nicely done, I think if you set a keyboard preference key for your node labeling you can access it without all the mouse clicks. I have mine set to the "Tab" key ( nothing else is set to it by default ) - Also I have tried white balancing from snow before - to me when you did that it looked a little cool and you later added some warmth, most likely from the sky reflecting on the snow and making it less white than it actually is. And for some of the new users - in the layer node on the skin, after qualifying the skin you can still put a power window on it and narrow down the selection - not necessarily needed here, but it is a standard thing for a colorist to do, checking the vectorscope at that point is also a good idea. Your eyes can get fatigued while color grading and referencing the vectorscope to confirm what you are looking at ( second opinion ) is always a good option.

I’ve done that too! But I’ve also found that from time to time I end up wanting to apply a node after the CST but for only one clip and it’s bit me in the ass haha. As long as you don’t need that or have footage from multiple sources, then doing the CST on the timeline works great!

It’s all the same stuff as editing a photo in Lightroom, it’s just called different things and laid out differently. “Lift” is shadows, “Gamma” is midtone contrast, “Gain” is highlights, “Offset” is like Exposure. Also I’ve noticed that most Davinci tutorials on KZbin are geared towards professionals doing commercial work. They have like 25 adjustment nodes, and it’s all a but much for an amateur who just wants to put together a decent looking 5 minute KZbin vid.

Awesome to see you using Resolve and CSTs, great content! I hope you don't mind when I point out that doing adjustments before CST can lead to strange results. The wheels and curves etc are basically working in Rec709, which causes weird effects when applied to log encoded footage. Something simple like reducing the brightness before CST will add a steep shadow rolloff in addition to making the footage darker. This is of course nothing that would throw off experienced graders as this can still be corrected afterwards. But this often adds additional correction steps to the process and can be frustrating for beginners. Making the CST the first node avoids things like that. Btw you can simulate those strange effects with the inbuilt gradients just like you did in your color wheels explanation video. I could also send you my already made project if you like.
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a great point! I tried it both ways and always found I got where I needed to go quicker and easier this way but I’ll have to play with it some more with the CST first in the chain too.

thanks so much for the work through! You explained everything really good! It's so hard to find someone actually telling you how to color grade on youtube without just selling their luts...

Thanks for saying that! My luts are pretty cool but you need a lot more than that to really know how to grade 😜

Thank Dunna, you hands down have the best explanation I’ve seen on how to colour grade in Davinci Resolve. It’s simple and effective as promised. Your one the reason I’m jumping to Davinci fully, I’ve been on the fence about it but thanks to this I’m going in coz I’ve had a license for a while and just never used it.
