Players from rugby clubs, High School, and Uni all try to get picked for Provincial clubs (e.g Western Province) through trial matches they get invited to. Best players of WP, plays for Stormers as they are the same insitution. Then all Provicial players in the teams like Stormers, Bulls, Cheetahs, Lions etc, do their best in their tournaments to stand out. After that Dr. Rassie picks the best players that suits his plans and play hard to represent the springboks.

In South Africa, we have an event called "Craven week," where many talented schoolboys are identified and recruited for rugby. Grey College has a remarkable history of producing numerous Springbok players and is widely regarded as one of the most successful institutions in developing rugby talent.

We do have university leagues which is one of the feeder systems into the professional teams, and the Springbok squad is chosen from those professional teams. 2 current springboks (Eben Etzebeth & Damien de Allende) played for my brother’s university team and from there were drafted to a pro team. Some players are scouted directly from high school, and lots of the pro teams have talent development academies that scout talented players as teenagers. And FYI, it’s been calculated that in each scrum, the forces exerted on the players is equivalent to that of a high-speed car crash - and they have to be strong enough that their bodies can take that many times in each match, week after week. It’s next level, pure brute strength & toughness.

Some of our High Schools are named College. Like Grey College, but it is a high school. Higher education is done at University - usually private higher education. We do have higher education, funded by government, which is called College, like Tshwane College where you get a degree. So yeah, it is confusing. But 2 different things.

When it comes to springbok players, it is a national team. That means that the players are chosen and called up from club rugby teams to represent the nation that is south africa against other national teams. Think of it like the Olympics where the best are called up to represent their nation Also for the rugby season, the springboks played their first game of the year yesterday against wales which they won handedly. Their next game will be against Ireland, currently world 2nd best rugby team in 2 weeks time.

Technically there's no off-season. First, it's the Northern Hemisphere called URC where our Franchise Teams compete When that ends, it's the Currie Cup where teams of our Provinces compete for the oldest Cup in rugby history, it's the most sought after local Cup. Each province has a Franchise Team and the Provincial Teams feed the Franchise Teams. Your schools and Varsity Rugby feed the Provincial Rugby. South Africa is the largest exporter of professional rugby players Then it's the Craven Week (during our first quarter school holidays) where schools compete. Which is also the Season for International Rugby called Test Matches played between Countries, which can be a once-off Test match or upto 3 games. Countries may tour each other home and away When that ends, it's the Intervarsity Cup in a league format between our Universities. The Champions Cup, which was previously known as the Tri-Nations ( New Zealan known as the All Blacks; Australia and South Africa compete) but they have added Argentina and Japan. Then it's wash and recycle

Love that you guys are loving our national team the Springboks, also love the content, keep it up. So from high school or varsity the players would be scouted and signed to a rugby club like the bulls, lions or sharks which represent a province, basically the equivalent to your rams, cowboys or patriots in American football, sometime they would be picked up by clubs in other countries like Ireland, England or France. Thereafter, the players, depending on their club performance would be chosen by the national team coach (Rassie) to represent south africa (THe springboks) for test matches or competitions like the world cup. Simply put, if the rest of the world played "American" Football, the USA would choose a squad/Team from the entire NFL to represent America in the world cup for American football if it existed, hope you can understand the analogy 👍

When you play school rugby youcan get chosen for teams for example every province in South Africa has a team like the Bulls Lions Sharks. then you play trails against every school in that province to make the team. example i played griquas which is the northencapes team. then while you play that pick players to move further. Later on you can play for the team in your province if your good and play for them in colleage or in universitys. then you can be chosen to play for springboks u/21 springboks or blitzboks if you have the talent

South Africas got an incredible feeding system to produce Springboks, with a long and illustrious tradition, it goes something like this: Elite schoolboy rugby league produces players chosen for Craven Week (named for Danie Craven an old time legendary administrator for the sport in SA) Craven week standouts get selected to attend academies at the various provincial sides, the academies also source talent from disadvantaged areas like Siya Kolisi who got picked to the Wester Province academy while he was from a poor area, it's the source of our pool of black players who can't attend the elite High Schools. From here the kids join club sides and the Varsity Cup University league, unless they are picked to join the senior provincial team directly, or they'll join the Junior Springbok sides at the under 20 or under 21 Age groups. Most of our Springbok talent today has been playing together since their days in the junior boks, so these guys know one another extremely well and the way they talk it's like their Springboks career really started as junior Boks. The whole system is very close to your Pro Football leagues I would venture to say, except we end up with a strong national side instead of a strong regional team in American Football leagues. If you've read all this congrats, I'll be publishing it as a short story look for it on Amazon soon.

But also understand the Springboks is a massive team there are different teams like team A and team b and so on but there are also different age groups. So some people are picked like a 16yr old and train to one day be a springbok player. The team you watch is the best of the best.

Its equivalent to the premier league or laliga. Just like the NBA, There are various teams like LA lakers or chicago bulls. And than you have the USA national basketball team.

Ok this is going to require a proper lesson. Boys start school around 6-7 years of age. They don't play any games for 2 years they just have practice where the coach throws the rugby ball in the air and all hell breaks loose for whoever decides to catch the ball. This game, as abnormal as it sounds, actually serves a purpose, as the positional skills and talent of each player are revealed (good passer, stepper, loose forward, strength) before they are ready to actually play an organized game. They watch all the Senior boys play in official interschool games that are rated and tracked by SA Rugby every weekend during the season from under 9 to u 18, usually a whole day affair for every scholar in a rugby school. This is for 2 years, just sitting there and dreaming of playing for their school and having only 2 practice days per week. They are deliberately being starved. After 2 years, these players start their primary school careers from under 9 to under 13 playing barefoot and the earliest games every winter since the under 9 game is the first game of the School's Saturday. Please note, there are more than 1000 rugby playing primary schools in South Africa. If good enough at under 13, some of these players are selected to present their state/province in their first provincial tournament. Step 1 to a Rugby Career. They start High School at under 14. Please note, there are more than 1000 rugby playing high schools in South Africa. If good enough at under 15, some of these players are selected to present their state/province in their second provincial tournament. Step 2 to a Rugby Career. Senior High School Rugby starts with under 16s then Under 18s, with each school having one 1st XV (First Fifteen), the best players that school has to offer. If good enough at under 18, some of these players are selected to present their state/province in their 3rd provincial tournament. This under 18 tournament also has a provincial/state Final, and a SA Schools side is selected at the end of the tournament. These are the best school boy rugby players in the country for that particular year. They also get to play about 3-5 international games versus other Schools teams from around the world. Step 3 to a Rugby Career. After High School, there a number of routes: Route 1: Amateur Club Rugby Route 2: University (Varsity Cup & Varsity Shield) Route 3: Under 20 Provincial Players who are selected to play for their provincial team at under 20 are seen and groomed as the next generation of professional players for that province. A player can do everything but if they do not represent their province/state, they probably won't make it as pros. Competition is fierce. This is where players also start getting paid contracts. If good enough at under 20, some of these players are selected to present their state/province in their 4th provincial tournament. This under 20 tournament also has a provincial/state Final, and a SA Under 20 side (Baby Boks) is selected at the end of the tournament. This Baby Boks Team prepares and plays in the under 20 Rugby World Cup every year. These are the best under 20 rugby players in the world for that particular year. Step 5 to a Rugby Career, with a high chance of entering men's provincial squads (Bulls, Stormers, Lions, Cheetahs, Sharks, Pumas, Griquas, Eagles, Leopards, Griffons, Bulldogs, Elephants). A South African rugby player has 4 years positional and game experience at 13 years. 9 at under 18, and 11 by the time they earn their first pro contract at 20/21. While all of this is happening, we are all rugby fans and there is current Rugby to indulge on at Schools, University, pros you name it, literally a religion, not to mention rugby intellectuals that you will find in every corner and crack of this country. The Springboks are the ultimate end product of this filter of filters, the #1 Rugby Factory in the world. So when you see a young player who has just made it to the Springboks, know that this person has been cooking for years already, waiting for his chance to put on the jersey.
