A few things: 1) The goal in rugby is to outscore the opposing team through penalty kicks that have to go over the rugby goalposts (the H-shaped poles at either end of the field), and these are worth 3 points. You can also score tries, worth 5 points, by touching the ball down into the goal area (which is indeed very similar to the end zone in American Football. The reason teams try and get as close to the goalposts as they can with tries, is because after a try is scored, you can get a converted kick which must go over the goalposts, just like the penalty kicks, and your angle is better if you score the try right under the posts. A coverted kick is worth 2 points. 2) You were referring to two separate people when you called them similar to Lebron James: Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse. They are two of the best wingers in the world, and it is their sole goal in life to score as many tries as they can. They need to be incredibly fast, agile and skillful to do this. Cheslin Kolbe is slightly shorter and stockier than Kurt-Lee Arendse, but they're often mistaken for each other because they both wear scrum caps (those little hat things, which don't protect the head from knocks, but are actually used for protecting the ears from being ripped off, because rugby is a full-contact game that has some nasty injuries). 3) South Africa (or the Springboks) are the current world champions, and are also the most successful team in the history of the world cup (and the second-most successful overall), as we have won 4 out of the 8 we've taken part in, and we've never lost a final. The second-best at world cups is New Zealand (and they are the most successful team outside of world cups). The world cup takes place every 4 years. South Africa have replicated a feat that New Zealand accomplished with the 2011 and 2015 world cups, and gone back-to-back for only the second time in history by winning the 2019 and 2023 world cups. The 2023 world cup was held in France last year, and it was FUCKING AMAZING. Do yourself a favour and react to the extended highlights of South Africa vs France and New Zealand vs Ireland in the 2023 world cup, those are two of the best quarter-finals in rugby history. 4) I recommend a channel called Squidge Rugby if you want to get into detailed analyses of rugby games, and I recommend a video called Rugby Explained for American Football Fans if you want something a bit more beginner-friendly. 5) Welcome! We are a very passionate fan-base, and the only thing you really need to know is that everyone hates England in rugby. 😆

At 5:15, you said the guy knocked the other guy, who was bigger than him, down. That little guy is Cheslin Kolbe. My favorite rugby player. He was told that he was too small to play international rugby, and he proved everyone wrong and is one of the best rugby players today. He is so skilled. Speed, skill, and his juking is insane. You should check out a video on him.

What an absolutely wholesome reaction to watch... I've watched the video reaction by so many others...and all the other channels always add commentary because they want to say something but have no idea as what what they are talking about. For someone from a rugby nation...took me a while to learn all the rules to appreciate a game when I watched it. Not all games will be fast paced and exciting...depends on the opposition you playing so you will change your strategy so as not to play to their strengths. But great reaction.. Women's rugby can be as exciting too

The reason why they go through the goal post is just for the positioning of the ball, so that it’s easier to to get it trough the goal posts when they kick it to score. And yes, you Have to touch the ball on the ground for you to score a try/touch down, once you’ve past the line. Go springboks, with love from your neighboring county Botswana 🇧🇼.

In Rugby, the number on the jersey indicates a position, rather than a person. South Africa has two brilliant young Wings ( #11 and #14 jerseys). Kurt-lee Arendse and Cheslin Kolbe. They play on either end of the field, depending on the specific team. They also look a lot alike from afar, as they both wear scrumcaps when they play. The numbers work as follows 1-3 front row, 4&5 Locks, 6-8 are loose forwards. 9 to 15 is the back line. The wingers are as mentioned, 11 and 14. The closest analogy to American Football, the wingers would be Running Backs.

The guy with the "helmets" (scrum caps), the one you likened to Lebron, are actually two differ players. Both equally agile and nimble, breaking ankles as they score tries. Cheslin Kolbe and Kurtley Arendse. It's awesome having them play on the same team.

Those are rugby posts or poles. You can score a try (American equivalent to a touch down), anywhere behind the try line (American equivalent to end zone). If you are able to, it's better to score as close to those poles as possible, which will make the conversion (will explain in a minute) a bit easier. After scoring a try, which is worth 5 points, you then have a chance to kick for the poles, which is called a conversion, as mentioned above, and this is worth 2 points, which will bring your score up to 7 points. If you score the try closer to, or even under, the poles, then when you take your conversion, you are able to kick over the poles directly in line with the poles.. If you score on the far end, left or right, then the conversion will be taken at the far left or right of the field, if that makes any sense. So, basically depending on where you score the try behind the try line, will determine where you place the ball for the conversion. You also kick for poles if you are rewarded a penalty, which is 3 points. And at any point during the game, you can go for a drop goal, which is when you drop the ball in front of you, and once it bounces off the ground, you kick it over the poles. This is worth 3 points. Hope this helps. Maybe someone else in the comments section could explain better. 😂

TL:DR where you touch the ball down behind the tryline (end zone) is where you take the kick at the uprights to convert your try (touchdown) for extra points But this posted above gave a decent description of why ppl try and get closer to the poles when they score a try (touchdown)

Well explained. The drop goal is when a player drops the ball ( a deliberate action) in front of him and kicks the ball at the same time that the ball hits rhe ground, or a split second after the ball hits he ground.

Also, the Rugby World Cup is coming to the USA for the first time ever in 2031, which will bring more exposure and fans to the sport in the States. The dude in the light coloured scrumcap is Kurt-Lee Arendse, and the one in the dark scrumcap is Cheslin Kolbe. They are both short guys, but with tremendous speed and agility. Unfortunately, American Football derived from this game, but cannot compare. The only protection these guys have is Gumguards, and occasionally a box and scrumcap. It is brute strength and determination. A true game of skill.

First name that came to (my) mind when you asked "who is the LeBron James of rugby", was Cheslin Kolbe. South Africa won the last 2 world cups, and without Kolbe, we would not have won it. He just have the knack to pop up at the perfect moment to do something impossible. BUT, rugby is team sport. Many other players like Ox Nche, Eben Etzebeth, Handre Pollard, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi, Kwagga Smith (my favorite player), etc. were also invaluable for the team. Put those players with Rassie Erasmus (the best international rugby coach by far), and you have that winning combo. Anyway, this video just consist of some highlights. What it doesn't show is the real reason the boks are so dominating. First of all, PHYSICAL DOMINATION. The Springboks have the BEST DEFENSE in world rugby. Every tackle is done as hard and as technically correct as possible. Every contact situation is executed in a way that the other team WILL feel it in their bones. Reason no2...TACTICS. In rugby you cannot win a game unless your forwards are dominating. During the 2019 World Cup, the coach shocked the world by using the replacements as impact players instead of injury replacements. In the 2023 World Cup he took it a step further by replacing basically the whole pack of forwards at half time, to have fresh legs on the field that can totally crush the opposition in the second half. And they did exactly that. And mark my words, we will take the next world cup too. I suggest watching this video: So how did the Springboks win the World Cup? | A Squidge Rugby Deep Dive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enXVhoCMfpyih68 So now you've watched lots of tackles and big hits. 🇿🇦 So to score a tri you have to touch the ball on the ground behind the line the posts is on, anywhere behind the line works but after the “touchdown” you get to kick in between those poles from the same angle where you touched the ball to the ground. So if you got the touch right on the side of the field that’s the angle where you have to kick from, if you touched it between those posts you get to kick a perfect straight kick from right in front of them making it much easier to kick over between the post for an extra 2 points. If you miss the kick you only get the 5 points for your tri or “touchdown” 🇿🇦

As a Massive springbok fan. With regards to your concerns on no pads or helmets. Tackling in Rugby union and NFL are different. Rugby gets a lot of cuts and bruises. Rarely broken bones or Concussions. So a lot of pain involved. However, NFL players does seem to take riskier tackles. Due to the false sense of security the helmets and pads bring. So they go harder more often and get very avoidable life/ career ending hits. Rugby does take place for 80 min over 2Hr. Where I've seen players get swapped on Defence/Offence so often on NFL. and the 48 min game lasts 3 hours.. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Rugby is a very fast paced game. There are no downs or quarters like in American Football. There are two, 40 minute halves, with a 10 minute break between halves. You know like in American Football, you get that last minute scramble at the end of a game, where everyone is fighting to score that touchdown? I'm not sure what it's called, but imagine the entire game being like that.....that's rugby. No pads, or gear. Only protection is a gum guard. Some people wear scrum caps, which is NOT a helmet and it doesn't protect you from concussions. It only protects against minor lacerations and to prevent you from getting cauliflour ears. The play also doesn't stop if you are tackled. It keeps goingthe person who gets tackled, has to immediately release the ball, that's why you will see them stretch it their arms, trying to give the ball to their teammates. Once their teammate had the ball, the play continues. If someone gets injured, the okay continues, unless there was some sort of infringement, or if the player is badly injured. But most of the time the player who is down, gets right back up and continues playing, or if they stay down, medics will run onto the field and check on them while the game goes on. A lot of reactors find that weird because in American Football, the play stops the moment someone is tacked or of someone is injured.

They just won the World Cup, not the championship, they're an international team (South Africa) not a franchise/club team, but when they're not with the national team they play for franchises/clubs all over the world, but most of the current squad plays for South African teams (they play in the URC, a inter-continental competition with teams from SA, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy, they used to play in Super Rugby, a comp who had teams from SA, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina and Japan). The World Cup is every 4 years and they've won 4 of them (1995, 2007, 2019, 2023). ps. USA is actually hosting the 2031 World Cup, and they even have their own pro league called the MLR.

This is safer than American football by the way they all can still count to ten when they reach 40 years old. There's a way of tackling that insures that there are no head injuries... and there are illegal or dangerous tackles

I think your daughter generally is not interested in athletes and sports. Learn the rules and you will love it. Learn what a ruck is and scrum. Also the reason the guys get closer to the poles is that after each score (try) the kicker kicks for those poles from where the scorer put the ball on the ground. If the scorer puts it down closer to the poles. It makes it easier for the kicker to kick. Each touch down is followed by a kick for extra points.
