DUP Voter Doesn't Understand Democracy, Westminster Or Northern Ireland?

A caller named Jean phoned into BBC Radio Ulster to complain about...Stormont? Sinn Féin and SDLP members of the Assembly or that Rishi Sunak isn't imposing direct rule in Northern Ireland. I don't think Jean knew herself what she was talking about. She is likely to be a DUP voter however.

Paisley from early 60's drummed it into them. Before Paisley it was the belief the status quo would be maintained. Every single unionist was on board in August 15th 1969 when Paisley had his mobs try to cleanse belfast of Catholics cuz he could see in the future that Catholics would at least control city hall. Hence the phrase he uttered once, " kill the nits before they turn into lice.

The mentality was explained in 1839 as a sort of tacit compact "formed between England and the Irish Protestants, which might be expressed in the following terms :- 'England will aid the Protestants of Ireland, with all her might, to oppress the Catholics of that country, and keep them in servitude and misery; for which she will place at their disposal her treasures, her army, her parliament: in return for which, the Protestants agree to impoverish Ireland, and sacrifice her industry and commerce to England' In other words England said to the Protestant faction, 'Resign to me the general interests of the country, and I will ensure you dominion over the nation in which you live' The Irish Protestant answered, 'I am willing to be your slave, provided you will aid me to tyrannise over others' Thus the Irish Protestants were secured in the conquered country, and England was gratified in her two most ardent passions, religion and love of money. Doubtless the treaty was never reduced to writing, but what I have stated, if not its exact words, were its genuine spirit" - Ireland: Social, Political, and Religious Vol 1, Gustave de Beaumont

It is very important to remember that Sinn Fein is the largest party in the NI Assembly. She seems to have quietly forgotten that. It is also important to remember that the majority in NI voted to remain in the EU. She seems to have forgotten that. The majority in the NI Assembly want to get the Assembly working. She seems to have forgotten that. The majority in the NI Assembly want the NI protocol implemented. She seems to have forgotten that. There is a chance that a person who only gets their news from Britain might never have known any of that. GBNews, in particular, hardly ever, if ever, mention any of those simple facts. ( There are other news providers who offer the same views ) It is difficult to find a Brexiteer who recognises that the NI protocol exists because it was voted for in Westminster. They all seem to have forgotten that.
@Subjagator
@Subjagator Жыл бұрын
Yup, they all think that if they can somehow just get Westminster to rule NI that they will get rid of the NI protocol, forgetting that it is only there because Westminster put it there in the first place. If they thought Westminster direct rule would strenghten the protocol they would suddenly be all against it. They are just throwing a tantrum because they didn't get their own way.

The problem of the DUP is not only the protocol because they don't want SF to be the strongest party in NI. The only way is to change the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement that the strongest party can start the government and the others are the opposition. Time changes and so must an agreement that is not optimized..

I'm Protestant, and I'm Irish. And I'm proud to be Irish. The British don't want us, not even the Conservative and UNIONIST Party. Time to have the vote on unification. Sad to say there is still a significant Protestant minority here which will resist any democratic mandate for that (the DUP's current stance is all to do with losing power, and nothing about observing the protocols (now that SF is the majority party)). And equally unfortunately, there are many like this woman who have zero idea of the political / legal reality. IMO, the really big problem in NI is that the GFA offers unification based on a majority vote, and NO ONE in the Protestant community is aware of it. Demographics are real, but there is almost zero dialogue between London, Dublin, and Belfast to discuss how this might actually be put into practice peacefully. NI needs a better future than being some after thought in London. Equally, it needs a better class of politician in NI, which is so horribly parochial. My hope is that Irish politicians have the courage and capacity to reach a hand across the divide to show recalcitrant Protestants here that actually Dublin has long since moved on from Home Rule is Rome Rule, and that this island offers a future for everyone, Protestant, Catholic, and Other.
