This tutorial is part 2 of a series on duplicating objects in Blender. This can be a confusing area given the number of ways Blender can replicate objects.
In this video we use an architectural scene to help demonstrate various ways under different circumstances to duplicate objects. We look at the use of:
• Collection Instances
• Duplicate Linked commands
• Object on Object Instancing
• Array Modifier
Part 1 is here: • Duplicating Objects fo...

06:24 Use of an Array Modifier to replicate bolts
09:09 Mirror a collection instance
10:43 Setting of the important Collection Instance Offset value
15:35 Using an Object on Object instance mechanism for the stairs
19:49 Replicating the stair mesh with Duplicate Linked
22:00 Applying independent materials to each stair instance

Another Great tut! - Thank you:) - my first thought was 'seems like an awful lot of prep at the front end' my second thought; 'gives absolute flexible control with minimal work saving a huge amount of time' Organisation is key.

I am so glad you are starting to explain other parts of blender in a similar way you explain render engine features. The quality of your tutorials are stunning! If I may add, to randomise the position of the texture when using the array modifier, I use the "Random per island" in the "Geometry" node of the shader. As you said in the video, there are many ways of doing the same thing, but this one in particular keeps the randomisation values within the material and can be re-used in other objects or projects

That's a great tip, I didn't know about this node. I will give it a try.

at 22:00,isnt there a more procedural way to randomize material position using only one material instead of multiple ones like you show? i'm pretty sure it's possible, i've seen it somewhere but i forgot how. someone care to explain?

Yes, there is. I did a subsequent video covering this method. Blender is like a Swiss army knife, always some tool hidden away you didn't realize was there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5LaoJ5tnMp8hs0

It's just transmission set to 1, IOR of 1.52, an a volume absorption node applied with a slight greenish color.
