I have to laugh a little at this. I put dimples in the tops of pistons since 1973. The first time I saw it done was when I helped a guy rebuild a Cummins in a boat before it went to Hawaii. It did add power, but also reduced fuel consumption as well. Since then I've done it on everything diesel I've done, including an EMD as well as a CAT D399 and D398. When I got into the racing engine world, I did this on many of these engines as well, and one actually won the Daytona 500. Absolutely great video with tons of information. So good, so much information, I watched it twice. I'll probably watch it again. I own a bunch of marine diesels with a couple coming up on overhaul. Hopefully Speed of Air makes custom pistons for models not on their list. I don't want to replace them with new engines because the new ones don't seem to be as reliable. The mileage boost is even more important in marine applications. My engines can run 24 hours for days or weeks without stops. Before I bought centrifuges I changed oil hot, engine running. Adding new oil and pumping old oil until it ran clear. Filters in a manifold for switching out hot. You have the best automotive repair business I've ever seen. Everything top notch. High quality work. No shortcuts. Repairs as perfect as possible. I know it was a lot of work getting there. The boss has a natural ability for teaching, too.

You need two things to empirically assert that these are viable and efficacious for the public: 1. Long-term proof, ideally 500+ hours on a couple of engines 2. Dyno tests, emissions tests, MPG tests, sound tests, etc. Go to Banks and do a collab. Edit: Tests FROM the manufacturer of these pistons mean nothing. You need several third-party, non-interested parties to test them. Banks is a reputable start with good publicity. Fluid dynamics is one of the most complicated physics disciplines in science, so who's going to check or verify? Especially when the thing you are changing is an event which takes microseconds, and is an explosion which is contained inside a steel sealed chamber. But the way he described it for us, it actually makes perfect sense. I believe it. But obviously trying to observe the change before and after will not be noticable. The change is over the course of millions of cycles.

That’s what is surprising me, it’s a legit improvement and should be greatly noticed all around. Especially if you have an EGR temp gauge installed on your truck. This is waaay less voodoo sounding than most mods sold for trucks today. That says something.

Fascinating technology. Thank you Dave! ps I had 1979 vw rabbit diesel had to wait 3 months from order to ship from Germany. Mechanical injection, no turbo. 42 city 50 hwy mpg. 69 cents per gallon. Got before gas crisis and never had to wait in line for limited 10 gallon leaded.

I love this stuff. Who would have ever thought a dimpled piston could change so many different things
@keithstudly60718 ай бұрын
And who would claim of such improvements as proved without an unusual number of tests being done. Seeing is believing and I haven't seen anything yet. Less talk and more showing and while we do that we have many competitive arenas where these ideas could be demonstrated so why waste time BSing with Dave? I recall a device to create swirl in the engine intake and amazing claims for that which was all bunk. Things like this come along on a regular basis. Cold fusion anyone?
@hhiser62068 ай бұрын
Has Speed of Air experimented with coating and dimpleing the cylinder head and valve surfaces? The goal being to eliminate EGR and PTF components. If the engine burns cleaner and more efficiently you don't need those systems.
@Duramaxjon8 ай бұрын
You still need emissions systems because efficiency alone is never going to eliminate NOx emissions. SCR systems with DEF reduce NOx, which is one of the more harmful gases from the combustion process. Look into the science of it. DEF reacts with NOx to substantially decrease the amount of NOx coming out the tail pipe. I wish there weren’t emissions systems on trucks but they do make sense as long as they don’t constantly fail

$3,770 and up for a set of piston’s, Plus Rebuild, you can buy a lot of diesel for that kind of money. Someone on here just posted the perfect answer, send it to Gale Banks and see what he says.

Fuel air mixture in the military bombs has been perfected its called a vacuum bomb & it makes them 3 times stronger blast radius sucking all the air out of the surrounding area. A combustion engine is the exact same principle.

I am excited for the 2.0L vw tdi pistons to release. I wanna see how those little guy make gains. Total seal just needs to come out with rings for those pistons. Add that with the bosch glow plugs that moniter combustion pressure. You'd have a pretty great data pig.

20:07 The dimples basically break the air tension like when they spray water into the diving area of a swimming pool. To break up the surface tension.

I think that’s done so the high divers can judge the distance to the water

Yeah that’s all fine and dandy until the intake valve closes and the cylinder is under 30 plus psi of boost and god knows what combustion pressure….learn about Bernuli’s principle and pascals law 😂😂😂
@debi52928 ай бұрын
@@localenterprisebroadcastin5971 I bet the dimples do nothing till TDC. At that point they may very well bring some turbulence in the combustion chamber. Hard to do, but how many have tried? That turbulence across the face of the piston would make a difference.

I've been a diesel knuckle buster for about forty five years. When I was still wet behind the ears the chief engineer on the ship told me that the black smoke that diesels produce was crystals of unburned fuel. Now that I'm retired some people ask me questions about the regen systems on their tractors and semis; I tell it's a catch can that when full goes into a 1,000 degree burn cycle to git rid of the soot. And some ask if it harms the engine? Which I tell them the results aren't in; but it does cost you acres or miles per gallon because of power loss!!!

Mr. Dave! You don't remember the 70's accurately! The VW Rabbit diesel started out as a 1.5 liters (50 hp) then moved up to 1.6 liters (52 hp.) Much later, came the 1.9L, after that, I lost track... (Sorry, it's the internet, there's always some guy... today, it's me.)

I never thought about that thin boundary layer just above the Piston. The way I I thought the way after ignition that the explosion would consume 100% of that cylinder to the top of the Piston. That's very interesting. Makes sense. But when you sink that the massive explosion would consume at all. Not just the fuel, but at least some of it reachs the top of the piston ?

It’s actually a relief to see people working in this way, truly approaching issues from first principles. It’d be great to see this rolled out to regular production engines. However, having worked in the automotive sector for over forty years, my cynical side says this will only ever be a niche product because too many people are too heavily invested in all the add-on post combustion treatments. But I do hope I’m wrong.

In as much as I truly can’t wait for the end result testing/performance of y’all’s 7.3 PS monster engine build, wanting sooo badly to do same of my spare 7.3 in shop, on engine stand, waiting to be gone thru, after watching this video & listening to everything your guest was breaking down, has my mind racing with thoughts of what sort of numbers could be ascertained from one of my 1955 Buick Nailhead 322 V8’s, incorporating these pistons⁉️‼️‼️ I’m currently building a 1966 IH Scout 800’s 152 inline (slanted; half-V8) 4 banger engine… this specific engine had interesting “semi-Hemi” designed piston tops, which conformed to the IH head specifically casted/machined of its combustion chambers! Strange shape at that too. Anywho, sadly, this original head had several cracks thru water jacket, from frozen water/coolant. Had to swap out its pistons for regular standard flat-top IH pistons that I pulled from a ‘75 IH Scout II’s 345 V8.. using one of that 345’s heads as well. Swapped rods, since diff length, new lifters, original 152 cam reworked/ground/polished, new oil pump. That 345 became a parts unit, due to half of that otherwise, low wear/milage engine, being extremely damaged by sitting water in it.. figure it was exposed to the elements w/hood open, no carb, no cover, for DECADES! Anywho, gunna be interesting to see how she (152) runs after all of this… wish I were putting in a set of these Speed Air pistons tho
