I caught so much grief for liking these guys back in the 80's because my friends and family thought they were 'pop pretty boys', I could never convince them of the level of musicianship in this band. Man, I hate musical elitists.

I got the same thing from family and some friends, they gave me hell about loving DD. Now some of the same people who use to give me a hard time about them now say " You know, I've recently realised that they were very talented musicians and a good band".

Their first album was incredible. Saw them in 1983 in Toronto when they filmed the live portion of the Reflex video (ticket stub to prove !). Still love their first album as their best.

Ha ha, I feel your pain. As a bloke I got the same heat from my school friends. I remember one friend calling them a bit a girls band. I was a closet Duranie for years after that.

Good for you for knowing outstanding music and now you’ve had your revenge! Duran Duran have been out there for 40 years proving the “they’re just pretty boys” crowd. The same thing happened with the Beatles in the 1960s…all the girls screamed for them and they were called “just a boy band that the girls scream over.” 😉👍

I'm a hardcore Duranie, and I was introduced to the band Japan through Nick and Simon on MTV in 82 or so. I've since learned how much an influence Japan was on Nick in particular, but the band in general and it's definitely evident here with Night Boat. Not taking away from Duran Duran at all, just commenting on how great a job they did with an excellent inspiration. John's first bass notes definitely remind me of Mick Karn's in certain Japan songs, which is a MASSIVE complement and John went on to become an impressive and inspirational bass player himself. Nick's style musically and sometimes sartorially definitely owes some to Richard Barbieri. They chose an excellent band for inspiration.

Did this upload start out, out of sync, or is my computer doing this. If anybody else notices it, reply. Roger's cymbal crashes, John's bass strokes, and Simon's lips not timed with his singing is a bit off. I'll use another computer in the future, maybe the local library's, and re-watch it. Besides that, early Duran Duran is like crack cocaine for my inner youth!

Good songs!! I was bang into them in 1981/82 and then found out what a gang of arrogant pricks they were who didn't care about the fans!! Especially Le Bon!! I remember watching this broadcast the night it originally went out!! Shame they're miming their backsides off as per usual, proving that they were always just about being good looking for the girlies and couldn't really play!!
@andremcpherson14245 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, Hope you're having a nice Sunday!! Thank you for your reply to my KZbin comment which, I assure you, was not meant to be incendiary!! We might not agree on much, but one thing's for certain, in this life, one can only take as they find!! If you'll allow me, please let me take you back to a freezing cold November night in 1982!! I was 16 years old at the time!! Duran Duran have just performed their second consecutive sell out show at the Liverpool Empire Theatre on the Rio Tour and I am outside a plush city centre hotel situated right on the banks of the River Mersey with a huge army of loyal Duran fans hoping for an autograph!! It soon becomes clear that there's absolutely no chance of that as the band have already returned to the hotel and show no sign of coming out!! Some time passes and most of the crowd begin to disperse!! Suddenly, on seeing me standing by my younger sister who, due to a severe disability is confined to a wheelchair with blue skin due to the perishing cold, the hotel doorman comes out and asks me if the plastic bag I'm holding has record covers inside it which I'd like autographing!! When I tell him that it does, he offers to take them inside for me with the intention of getting the members of Duran Duran to sign them, but tells me that he "Can't promise anything as they've been staying at the hotel for the past two nights and are NOT very nice people!!" Almost an hour later (The time is now after midnight!!) the doorman returns with my bag and says that he did his very best but, like he said, they aren't very nice people!! When I look at my covers, 'Andy Hamilton', the guest saxophonist has signed everything, even the debut album cover and first few singles which he didn't even play on!! On the other hand, the only other autograph was John Taylor's who just signed my Rio tour brochure!! What did he write: "Down The Pool!! John Taylor!!" I thought that was pretty mean spirited to say the least, not just because the people of my city had given him and his band two brilliant nights of rapturous support throughout their shows, but because being a huge football fan, the very proud Liverpool born striker and devout Liverpool F.C. fan "Peter Withe" had scored the only goal in the European Cup Final a few months before, which had won John Taylor's very beloved Aston Villa their first and to date, only prestigious European title!! That said, I certainly take your point that at the time, they were in their early twenties and everybody wanted a piece of them!! But that was my Duran Duran experience and I didn't really bother following them after that, which is just as well really because in my opinion, and it is only my opinion, though they became arguably one of the biggest bands in the world soon after, I felt the quality of their material began to go rapidly downhill after their first two albums!! With regards to the Old Grey Whistle Test, one of the very best TV show of all time in my view, it became strict BBC policy a very long time ago, to have all artists pre-record their performances so that there was no way anybody could say or sing anything which would cause offence to viewers!! Also, it minimized the chances of equipment failure!! Take it from me as a long standing session keyboard player, Duran Duran are definitely miming in that OGWT performance!! If you were or are a musician yourself, you would know what to look out for to know that!! Maybe they became great musicians as time went by, you would know that much more than I would, but personally, I'm sure that even they would agree that, in their early days they were pretty basic!! I've often wondered if they became more humble and more fan orientated as time went by too, they certainly weren't in 1982 that's for sure!! Nevertheless, I always respect other people's opinions!! Peace to all!! Have a good one!!

@andremcpherson14243 жыл бұрын
@@MsLylals Hi Clarissa, thanks so much for the question, hope you're well!! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you!! I took what John Taylor had written on my tour programme as a bit of mischievous football related banter!! Being as I am from the city of Liverpool, which, at that time (1982) had one of the best football teams in the world, Liverpool FC, (my team!!) I believe in writing "Down the pool", he actually meant down with Liverpool FC!! Which was very surprising as he supports Aston Villa and as far as I know, there isn't and has never been any bad feelings between the club he supports and mine!! Plus, a little earlier that year (1982) his team (Aston Villa) had just won their first and, to date only European Cup (now know as the Champions League!!) and the only goal in the game which won the trophy was scored by fellow Scouser (Slang term for a native of Liverpool) and self confessed fellow Liverpool FC supporter Peter Withe!! So, with all of that in mind, despite being just 16 years old at the time, I've since felt Mr. Taylor is a bit of an idiot to say the least!! Hope that answers your question, thanks again and take care, Andre!!
